I still don't know what people saw in "Alone again" that they didn't see in You Me At Six's "Rescue me", except the fact that it was based on a semi-classic.

As they say if a songs good enough itll rise to the top..which is exactly why i endorse OA/OS approach to releasing singles!

That doesn't always happen, and even so that's a subjective thing anyway.

Yeah, people make it out to be a lot worse than it really is tbh. I think the Moves Like Jagger situation really scared people last year. And how people talk about a song cilmbing to its peak as if it's impressive, but most songs seem to do that now, so I don't really think it's that big a deal anymore.

That's not true. Last year, almost 69% of records that entered the Top 75 peaked on their first week. A massive improvement from the 96% or so we saw in 2005 for instance, but still a clear majority peak at their entry position.

Ive waited years for the chimes of big ben to get into the Top 40 : )

Since 2000 when they peaked at Number 53?

Well most post album JLS, Westlife and 1D songs dont rise up the charts....maybe its just a coincidence though? :P

It IS true based on this week's top 40.

One Shot and Eyes Wide Shut did extremely well to be fair. And you still have to answer for songs like Give Me Everything, Sexy and I Know It climbing up the charts. So it doesn't make much of a difference imo.

 Thought id slip in with that remark early when im only into work and no-one would pick up on it until later in the afternoon lol.

Im still of the view that the decent pop songs will rise to the top with enough airplay etc! Give me everything for one was OA/OS was ity not?

You can't really judge 1D yet, cause One Thing hasn't even had its proper release. It's been doing pretty well considering. :)

But that's such a small sample as not to be statistically relevant

"Reet Petite" by Jackie Wilson used to hold the record and it was something ridiculous like 18 years. "Telephone" I think holds it for an unbroken chart run.

"Something ridiculous like 18 years" was actually 29 years, 1 month and 11 days. (From entering in the chart dated 16/11/57 to making #1 on the chart dated 27/12/86.)

The actual longest is Tony Christie with '(Is This the Way to) Amarillo', which was 33 years, 4 months and 6 days between entering and peaking at #1. When it peaked at #1 it credited Peter Kay, but the track itself was the same.
