Posted February 12, 201213 yr Just a list of artists who had at least 1 song climb significantly after their death (but keeping it to the download era where to get the 'death effect' didn't require specific re-releasing by the record label and/or the artist in question having released material very shortly before their death). Big death effects Amy Winehouse - 9 songs entered the top 100, 6 in the top 40 Michael Jackson - 33 songs entered the top 100, 12 in the top 40 + another 6 top 100 (1 top 40) by The Jackson 5/The Jacksons Whitney Houston - 13 songs entered the top 100, 3 in the top 40 Smaller but still significant death effects Boyzone - 'No Matter What' re-entered at #88 (after Stephen Gately's death) Donna Summer - 'I Feel Love' re-entered at #45, several others made the iTunes top 100 Etta James - 'At Last' re-entered at #39, 3 or 4 others made the iTunes top 200 Gerry Rafferty - 'Baker Street' re-entered at #55 Luciano Pavarotti - 'Nessun Dorma' re-entered at #12 The Monkees - 'Daydream Believer' re-entered at #69, 'I'm A Believer' #94 + a few others made the iTunes top 200 (after Davy Jones' death) Nate Dogg - 'Regulate' re-entered at #45 Stereophonics - 'Local Boy In The Photograph' re-entered at #60 (after Stuart Cable's death) Very minor death effects Andy Williams - 'Moon River' and 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You' made the iTunes top 100 Beastie Boys - 3 songs made the iTunes top 200 (after MCA's death) Bee Gees - 'You Win Again' made the iTunes top 100 and a few others went top 300 (after Robin Gibb's Death) Brittany Murphy - 'Faster Kill Pussycat' made the iTunes top 100 Heavy D & The Boyz - 'Now That We Found Love' made the iTunes top 200 (after Heavy D's death) Patrick Swayze - 'She's Like The Wind' made the iTunes top 100 Smiley Culture - 'Police Officer' made the iTunes top 200 Edited October 1, 201212 yr by Bré
February 12, 201213 yr If I remember correctly, didn't Baker Street enter the iTunes top 40 after the death of its singer (whose names eludes me)?
February 12, 201213 yr Author Nessun Dorma IIRC? If I remember correctly, didn't Baker Street enter the iTunes top 40 after the death of its singer (whose names eludes me)? Good calls. Both added to the list :D Rather a grim topic! :o Indeed, but it's a valid point of chart interest so I thought I might as well start a thread on it. Edited February 12, 201213 yr by Bré
February 12, 201213 yr Did Boyzone's Gave It All Away jump up to number 10 when one of the members died? EDIT: 09-20-29-10- Was this because of the member's death? Edited February 12, 201213 yr by liamk97
February 12, 201213 yr Author Did Boyzone's Gave It All Away jump up to number 10 when one of the members died? EDIT: 09-20-29-10- Was this because of the member's death? No, Stephen Gately died before the release of the song - that's why they did a new album I think.
February 12, 201213 yr No, it was released after his death as a tribute. "No Matter What" re-entered at #88 following his death, along with the album Back Again - No Matter What. Also, when one of the members of Stereophonics died, the band had a re-entry with "Local Boy in the Photograph", and probably others which Bray will find in an instant.
February 12, 201213 yr Did Boyzone's Gave It All Away jump up to number 10 when one of the members died? EDIT: 09-20-29-10- Was this because of the member's death? I remember this, it was after a tribute show to Stephen Gately, so it kind of was, but not directly. People downloaded it after they performed it on the show and it jumped back up.
February 12, 201213 yr I'd love to see the iTunes thread of July 2009 when MJ passed away. :o Here's the iTunes thread of June 2009 when MJ passed away from page 28 onwards: http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?s...5959&st=540

I didn't know about No Matter What's re-entry being due to Stephen's death, I thought it was just used on a TV show or something. Added to the list along with Stereophonics anyway :D Thanks. If anyone else can remember any more I've forgotten, do say :P I've also added Heavy D & The Boyz who had a very minor resurgence with 'Now That We Found Love' after Heavy D's death at the end of last year.
February 12, 201213 yr I was going to mention Stuart Cable but I didn't think it had much effect on Stereophonics songs at all.
February 12, 201213 yr I'd love to see the iTunes thread of July 2009 when MJ passed away. :o I was hoping I could help, but I only started archiving the iTunes charts in Aug'09.
February 12, 201213 yr As grim as I may sound, I'm curious as to what songs by major/iconic artists will chart highest out of their back catalogues once they pass (especially prematurely/in shocking circumstances). My guesses would be: Britney Spears - '...Baby One More Time' (as the iconic track) and 'Everytime' (as the dedication track) Christina Aguilera - 'Beautiful' (as both the iconic and dedication track) or possibly 'The Voice Within' Madonna - 'Vogue' (as the iconic track), 'Like A Virgin', 'Material Girl' and 'Frozen' (as dedication track) George Michael - 'Faith' (as the iconic track) and 'Freedom' and 'Careless Whisper' Kylie Minogue - 'Can't Get You Outta My Head' (as the iconic track) and 'I Believe In You' More recent... Bruno Mars - 'Just the Way You Are' (iconic track) Rihanna - 'Umbrella' (iconic track) and 'Take A Bow' (as dedication track) Beyonce - 'Crazy In Love' (iconic track - yes not SL instead) and 'Halo' (as dedication track) Leona Lewis - 'Bleeding Love' (iconic track) and 'Happy' (dedication track) Katy Perry - 'I Kissed A Girl' (iconic track) and 'The One that Got Away' (dedication track) Lady GaGa - 'Bad Romance' (iconic track) and 'Born This Way' / 'The Edge of Glory' (dedication track) GOD I hope none of these leave us any time soon. :o Edited February 12, 201213 yr by SceneofSIXCrimes

February 12, 201213 yr I don't see the difference between "iconic track" and "dedication track"? I guess the 'dedication track' could be the more poignant one that radio/TV jump on to soundtrack news and other footage. I wouldn't have said that Man In The Mirror is Michael Jackson's most iconic track for example, not by a long stretch. But it was the one that seemed to fit the mood the most of his back catalogue and hence outperformed other songs of his that might be considered more 'classic' following his death.
February 12, 201213 yr I don't see the difference between "iconic track" and "dedication track"? Llike Man in the Mirror wasn't Michael Jackson's most "iconic track", but it sold the most after it died, because it's like a "dedication track". The sound of the song and the lyrics are more likely to sell to people who are mourning.

You defined it far better than I could have. I could have used Amy Winehouse as an example but 'Back to Black' was both her iconic and dedication track since it was arguably her most well known while also fitting the mood of her passing.
