February 22, 201213 yr Apart from the Lana Del Rey award The antipathy towards Lana bemuses me - IMO she has a very unusual & effective singing voice.
February 22, 201213 yr I still think its criminal that One direction won an award for best single when they didn't even co-write the song. Best Single should be given to best song written by an artist or at least co-written. Also there just isn't enough awards, particularly for international artists they should have the same amount for British and International artists. I miss the Best Rock act, Pop act live act ect awards. Best video is another one that should be reinstated. The most awards an act can win now is just 3, 4 if your a new act that broken through in the last 12 months. I can remember the days when an act could get up to 6 nominations although nobody ever won that many but still. Rant over lol
February 22, 201213 yr The problem is the word "Best" But, on the other hand, they were not awarding best song. There's a difference.
February 22, 201213 yr Brit awards winners One Direction have been snubbed by Capital FM after they thanked BBC Radio 1 rather than the Global Radio station at the UK music industry's biggest night of the year. The former X Factor contestants, signed to Simon Cowell's Syco label, won the best single award at Tuesday's Brits, as voted for by listeners of Capital FM and iTunes users. But accepting the award for their song, What Makes You Beautiful, at London's O2 Arena and in front of more than 6 million ITV1 viewers, band member Harry Styles said a "massive thank you to Radio 1". Global Radio boss Ashley Tabor and his director of programming Richard Park, who were at the Brits, were both said to be upset by the incident. An appearance by One Direction planned for Wednesday on Capital was dropped. The band are also understood to have been bumped down the station's playlist with their music said to be conspicuous only by its absence this morning. "One Direction as far as Capital are concerned are only going in one direction," said one industry source. The gaffe was seized on Radio 1 DJs including breakfast presenter Chris Moyles who tweeted: "Best British single voted by listeners to Capital FM, One Direction. Harry Styles said 'a massive thank you to Radio 1' HaHa Nice one!" Global's talent division manages One Direction's boyband rivals The Wanted, who were also shortlisted for the best single prize. A spokesman for Global Radio declined to comment. Something good did come out of the show then! :D :D
February 22, 201213 yr Remember, one of the biggest farces was when 'Could It Be Magic', (Take That), Won the 'Best British Single Award', in 1993. Not only did they not write it, but it was a Cover of a Barry Manilow Song, which was on his 'Barry Manilow' Album in 1973! He had a No.25 Hit with it in 1975. Donna Summer had a No.40 Hit with it in 1976. Then Take That do an up-tempo version in 1992, get to No.3 with it, & end up with The BRITS 'Best British Single' award in 1993! If that wasn't ridiculous, I don't know what is! We then had Robbie Willians getting the Award at the 2000 BRITS, for 'She's The One', which he released in 1999. It was actually a note for note copy of the World Party Song, off their 'Egyptology' Album, from 1997. I really do not think that Cover versions should be allowed in the Best Single Nominations. Only New Songs..... As to Capital FM - I don't particularly like One Direction, but they are only Boys, & it was just a mistake, when they thanked Radio 1. Capital FM is being vindictive in reacting as it has. Their entire Staff may as well be the same age as One Direction. Maybe they are! :) Edited February 22, 201213 yr by zeus555
February 22, 201213 yr Glad they did, and it wasn't really a shock. It's one of the best songs from last year. Well deserved. I strongly disagree. At best, its an average song by a totally manufactured band who really didnt deserve to win anything. I can think of miles better songs that should have won including paradise, the a team or rolling in the deep.

They should never have won but it was voted for by the public so probably attracted votes from a lot of teenagers.
February 22, 201213 yr Glad they did, and it wasn't really a shock. It's one of the best songs from last year. Well deserved. Totally agree. My favourite single of last year, so glad it won. :) And I think it's stupid of Capital to snub them now, cause of one little mistake...
February 22, 201213 yr I agree totally. They should never have won but it was voted for by the public so probably attracted votes from a lot of teenagers. No probably about it. Fans of The Wanted, One Direction and JLS have been competing on Twitter for weeks to see who can multi vote the most. Wasn't in the least bit surprised when I heard One Direction had won. Fans of the other contenders just wouldn't behave like that and Adele, Ed Sheeran never stood a chance. I read One Direction got 80% of the vote.
February 22, 201213 yr Capital will still play One Direction, trust me. Ultimately, Capital want to play the songs that attract the highest audience, and One Direction songs do that. I'm sure Capital get a lot of requests for One Direction, so they'll have to play them eventually. And it says in the article they were "bumped down" the playlist anyway, which probably just means they'll play them slightly less than they used to. To me, I think they thanked Radio 1 on purpose, since they want to be on good terms with the station to ensure they get playlisted for each single. A lot of artists suck up to Radio 1 for that reason. They don't have to worry about Capital, since they'll get played on Capital no matter what anyway. I think part of the reason why One Direction won was also because there really wasn't any amazing (from the perspective of Capital's audience) songs in the poll this time. Last year, Pass Out, the "biggest" song of 2010 won over some boy groups with massive fanbases didn't it, because the song is THAT liked. I'm sure if Earthquake was in it this year it could've beaten One Direction. Edited February 22, 201213 yr by Eric_Blob

February 23, 201213 yr The antipathy towards Lana bemuses me - IMO she has a very unusual & effective singing voice. My comment wasn't really based on apathy towards her or her voice, it was her winning the "international breakthrough" artist at the Brits based on one single.
February 23, 201213 yr My comment wasn't really based on apathy towards her or her voice, it was her winning the "international breakthrough" artist at the Brits based on one single. OK, fair enough - though I meant it as a general comment, rather than one directed at you. So she's gone OTT with the botox, but I don't see what else people could object to about her?
February 23, 201213 yr Agree with most of that review - the BRITs are nothing but music snobbery gone mad and they need to go away ... NOW. It's anti-snobbery really - the whole point of the Brits compared to a Pitchfork end of year list (or even the Mercury prize) is that they're shamelessly charty and value little else over record sales.
February 23, 201213 yr I enjoyed it...to a point. There shouldn't be any category that's chosen by the public imo, these should be industry awards for actually the "best" not the "most popular." Bring back Smash Hits (as had already been said) for that! Not enough scope in terms of awards so that everyone who deserves one can shine e.g. Best Video, Best Rock act etc etc.
February 24, 201213 yr Apart from the Lana Del Rey award, the Olly Murs performance and the cutting short of Adele's 2nd acceptance speech, not a bad job. I take it u didnt like Olly Murs performance as well? I thought he sounded weak. In comparison, Ed Sheeran was amazing live.
February 25, 201213 yr I take it u didnt like Olly Murs performance as well? I thought he sounded weak. In comparison, Ed Sheeran was amazing live. Weak, out of tune and in places out of time with the backing as well. Just one of those things I guess. Did Rihanna sing live or was she miming? (I had flicked across to another channel at that point)
February 25, 201213 yr I don't think anybody mimed at the BRITs. Olly Murs and Rihanna obviously didn't (they did too many notes wrong to be miming ). Bruno Mars, Adele and Ed Sheeran all had really brilliant vocals on their performances, so they could've mimed them.
