Van Morrison's classic Brown Eyed Girl also failed to chart. His album Astral Weeks is regularly voted among the best of all time yet also failed to spend a single week in the chart.

I've written about this in my blog.. One of the most interesting chart facts ever. I also hope that it'll never chart just to maintain its status.

I believe all the singles from Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" had miserable chart runs. Many of them are true classics.

Yes, the Singles from 'Rumours' were terrific, & not one had a decent UK Chart Run.

I especially loved 'Go Your Own Way', the first Single off it. It only did this:,

W/E 19th February 1977 - 50 - 40 - 38 - 42

W/E 28th May 2011 - Re-Entry - 62

The Killers 'Mr Brightside', which is featured in many "Greatest Songs of All Time" countdown, had an appalling run when it first charted...

{10}-26-38-60-> 4 Weeks

but since downloads have been included they've managed to have it extended to...

73R(158)-64R(21)-60R(50)-73-70R(29)-59R(30)-75. Which takes it's total to a pretty shit, 11 weeks top 75! And considering the status of the song it is an abysmal run. It should have a 'Chasing Cars'-esque run at least. Not sure how many weeks top 200 they have though, it's a staple inside the iTunes top 300 so, I guess it's got a very healthy top 200 run...

EDIT: UGH. I must learn to read topics!

Oh such a classic! We're still including it in our dj sets.

Polyhex/chart books continuing to stick to the top 75s alone long after the top 100 started being made freely available again by the OCC has caused Mr. Brightside's weeks total to be reduced from 71 to 11  I'm not sure how many top 200 weeks it has, I think it's only been outside the top 200 on a small handful of occasions since all downloads became chart eligible.

There were periods in the 80s / 90s when the top 100 was available and they've done the same then, so It's a good thing for comparing stuff across decades and I guess they figure they always get a top 75 but the top 100/200 comes and goes historically speaking.

I was thinking probably the biggest example I know of is Till I Collapse by Eminem.

It wasn't released as a single, but it's one of his most iconic songs, a top 1000 staple now, and only peaked at #73 in 2009. It's sold over 1,000,000 downloads worldwide, even though it's from 2002.

That is an absolute classic I think, and has had an appalling chart run (and none at all when it was released obviously since album tracks couldn't chart then).

I feel like people are throwing around the word 'Classic' a little too easy here, perhaps its considered an 'Eminem classic' but its certainly not a classic, I pride myself in my pop music knowledge (not so much hip hop) and I have never heard of this song before. True 'Classic' songs are songs like 'Brown Eyed Girl' and 'Go Your Own Way' (neither are songs I own or particularly like but everyone knows them etc).

'Send me on my way' by Rusted Roots- 38-39-OUT

Who?

Doors - Light My Fire and Temptations - My Girl both missed the top 40 when released in the 1960s (although both did go top 10 when re-issued in the 1990s).

U2 - One - 23-7-9-24-43-64

Green Day - Basket Case - 7-8-14-30-44-53

Green Day - Time Of Your Life (Good Riddance) - 11-20-31-52-75

Green Day - Minority - 18-31-49

This had an absolutely pants chart run to start with:

Elbow - One Day Like This 39-44-63-50R(2)-62

Unless something unexpected happens, this will eventually be one of those songs which people assume was a massive hit with several weeks in the top ten at the very least.

Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven has a peak of #37 (though to be fair it wasn't released as a single at the time).

Considering it's the most covered song of all time (and the act behind it :P) The Beatles' Yesterday wasn't a very big hit. Peaked at #8 and only 7 weeks in the chart.

It was also a belated release (1976) so that might explain why.

AC/DC's Highway to Hell (1979) peaked at #56. Even to date they don't have any top ten singles.

The Clash got their only top ten single when Should I Stay... was re-released and went to #1. Even London Calling stalled at #11.

Sting - An Englishman in New York (#51, 1988)

Sex Pistols - Anarchy in the UK, #38 and 16 years later #33.
