What is the weekend effect?

It's where big hits that are older than a month or so get a resurgence at the weekend due to people hearing them out in clubs and the like, it's why all the older songs make climbs on Saturday/Sunday.

This question gets asked so often that I feel there should be a pinned topic explaining the definition.

M.I.A up to 35 :)

My feed has her at #37. It might have reverted because I have Take Care at #31 and Niggas In Paris at #14.

Waka Waka currently #116 and #171. Maybe it'll be back in the top 100 this week?

Surely the only world cup song that charts outside football season!

Probably (althugh I think Hips Don't Lie probably has aswell?).

One of the versions is from the new Now That's What I Call Running! compilation album, but the other version is the single version. I don't know why it's so high atm. The song should've been a bigger hit when it was released imo. It was massive in so many countries.

Hips Don't Lie is classified as a world cup song now?

I think it's one of those songs that was a much bigger hit than its peak suggests? See also 'Pumped Up Kicks' etc.

Yeah, there's that aswell. I think it's sold well over 200,000 now. But I remember Waka Waka slaying charts in other countries, spending 15 weeks at #1 and ridiculous things like that. I glad it wasn't that big here, but it would've been nice for it to go top 10. UK radio were really not supportive of the track though.

I thought it was. I remember there was a special world cup remix of it aswell, which had extra synths and chanting in.

They weren't at all supportive of it, I don't recall any stations playlisting it. And the music channels barely played it either. It's not exactly a club friendly song so can't gain sales and exposure from there either  It sold purely from World Cup hype initially and has continued selling on the strength of the song and the fact that it's still being played all over Europe, so people returning from holidays download it etc... A crying shame that it got such little support here but radio seem to go on and off Shakira in this country, it's strange.

Although the main reason for its continued success is surely that it's perpetually 59p...

The only thing I know of is that she performed a version of it at the closing ceremony of the world cup, and it was out around the same time... But that's all the info I see on Wikipedia. :P Apart from that, unrelated...

Someone needs to challenge Gotye, this is getting boring now!!

The lyrics do have nothing to do with the World Cup, to be fair. So maybe you're right. I always assumed it was though.
