To be super duper pedantic India could be counted as a part of the UK at the time Cliff was born (although I'm not sure if the colonies were actually considered part of the UK, they were certainly part of the British Empire).

 

On a related note Rita was also technically born in Yugoslavia, not Kosovo. So our current #1 is by an artist from a country that no longer exists :magic:

I'm a bit late to this but no, the colonies were never considered part of the UK. My dad likes to mention being taught about the Empire at school (when the Empire still existed) and being told how anyone from the Empire could come here and be made welcome. He thought the 1930s equivalent of "Yeah, right".

 

The Cliff sample is just one of many examples of how nationality cannot be defined simply in terms of country of birth. If that was what counted then Joanna Lumley (born in India), Boris Johnson (USA) and Paddy Ashdown (India again) are also not British.

It's such a shame, Geri's number 1's are so much more memorable :( I'm always gonna be biased towards this though, just think it could have gone to a better artist than Cheryl if it was to. (Not Jessie J, Rita Ora or Pixie Lott though).
