it's a DJ Fresh track, not a Rita Ora track, if it was another unknown female vocalist,

it would have gone to number 1 too.... it's a DJ Fresh song which features guest vocalist Rita Ora, therefore should not be counted as a solo Rita Ora track....

That can't be assumed, it may be the singer's vocals that sells the song more than the actual production. Who's to say it would have sold as well if another unknown artist back then such as Charli XCX for example were the featured vocalist?

To change the topic a bit from this boring argument, I think it's likely Cheryl may also match this record soon as she has 3 solo #1s (all of which ARE NOT COLLABORATIONS!!!) and is due a comeback soon which will probably have a decent amount of hype as A) she's returning to XF and B) it's her first new material for a couple of years. I really, really hope she doesn't elect to use a featured artist so we don't have to have this debate again.

I can genuinely see Cheryl teaming up with someone for her next single, to make it feel like a BIG single. Similarly, with Call My Name where Calvin was the producer although, thankfully for people on here, he obviously wasn't credited.

Ultimately, some people who played a big part in the song are credited, some or not. Therefore, there's never an objective way of saying if it is a solo record or not if we're going to be so pedantic. Calvin could have easily have been credited for Call My Name considering he did the same duties as for We Found Love

But how small a contribution to a song should be sufficient for full credit?

That's a question that should be clarified : One verse? One line?? One word???

Well yes that may mean the record would be more controversial but seeing as she's the singer throughout Hot Right Now and the lead artist on R.I.P, it doesn't matter here :)

Which incidentally also applies to 'I Will Never Let You Down'! God, Calvin really missed a trick not demanding to be credited on that and 'Call My Name' seeing as they could just as 'rightfully' count to his #1 tally as 'We Found Love', then he could claim to have 8 #1s instead of 6. Not even mentioning 'Holiday' and 'Spectrum' :P

Geri is not average.

If don't count 50s, 60s, 70s there is only 1 British female singer in last 30-35 years, which can be more deserved record holder, than Geri. It's Dido.

I'm sorry but Geri Halliwell is nothing in comparison with Leona Lewis. The latter has one of the best voices around the world!!We have to be honest here. Do you know which of her songs are No1.s? (Bag it up..? Mi Chico Latino..? It's Raining Men..? Lift Me Up..?). At least, Leona has only ground-breaking songs as No.1 (A Moment Like This, Bleeding Love, Run). I really like Geri Halliwell but she is average IMO (her songs too). Leona should hold this record! But all we know that this world is so unfair... :P

One More Sleep deserved to be Christmas #1, and her fourth! A future Christmas classic in the making!

Of course, because she is my favourite singer. [i hate "Raining Men", prefer "Look At Me" as # 1, which deserved to be her fifth # 1 single :) ]

More honesty it's must be Cilla Black / Dusty Springfield, maybe Mary Hopkin / Lynsey De Paul.

Well even though Rita has equalled Geri, It'll be a hell of a long time before a british female solo act or any female solo artist for that matter is able to have four consecutive no.1 singles and she still has accounted 10 no.1s throughout her career with the Spice Girls and Solo.

I would hardly call AMLT and Run "ground breaking" they were both glorified covers :P and i personally find her voice rather irritating :o (Awaits tons of abuse). Besides if anyone should deserve to have 4 no.1s its Adele, its a surprise she hasn't had more than 1 tbh.

The most interesting thing about Leona is the fact that she doesn't sing her songs with the same tone of voice. There are many songs that she is sounded like another person (She is a versatile singer). On the other hand, Adele's songs have almost the same tone of voice. I think that only Celine and Leona have managed this..

I'm surprised that no one has mentionted the fact that whilst identifying as British, Ora was not born in the UK, but in Kosovo.

So Halliwell, still has the record of UK-born female soloist with most number ones.

Good! No other UK female deserves to match this record yet, each of Geri's number 1s are so completely different and shes one of the very few artists whose personality shows in their music.

That's a tenuous point if she has UK citizenship though, which is presumably the case (I don't know the exact criteria - I know in Ireland one can be naturalised after five years of legal residence) considering she's lived in London since she was a year old (thank you Wikipedia ). It's more than simply 'identifying as British'.

Sh*t just got political :coffee:.

This. To say 'Hot Right Now' isn't worthy of being attributed to Rita Ora as one of her number 1s is actually quite insulting. She made that song a success just as much as DJ Fresh made it a success.

I wasn't saying that she isn't British, merely pointing out that being British and British-born are two seperate things, and on women who were born in the UK, Halliwell is at the top, and as far as people born in Kosovo goes, Ora's pissed it. This isn't a new thing it's the same as Cliff Richard being cited as the British male with most solo number ones, however the solo male with the most number ones born in the UK is split between George Michael, Elton John and Robbie Williams (7) as Richard was born in India.

That's fair enough - I was just saying that it was more than a case of identifying as British. Personally, I don't get the big significance of being British-born, or any records based on people being born in any country. As far as I'm concerned, records based on broader citizenship criteria are the important ones.

To be super duper pedantic India could be counted as a part of the UK at the time Cliff was born (although I'm not sure if the colonies were actually considered part of the UK, they were certainly part of the British Empire).

On a related note Rita was also technically born in Yugoslavia, not Kosovo. So our current #1 is by an artist from a country that no longer exists :magic:

Is Rita even female?

kek

:o I smell a loophole. Rita has no origin, therefore neither do her #1s and her 'record' is hereby invalidated :cheer:. Quick, someone get Geri on the phone .

I don't care anyway as far as I'm concerned Rita's equalised Geri's record, I was just surprised some of the other pedants on this topic didn't mention it. :D
