its unbelievable how big Shaggy was in 2001 :o very much of his time it seems

nonetheless, I love this, so tongue in cheek and distinct

I agree. I asked people on here why it was so big at the time, but nobody ever seems to be able to give me an answer, just "People liked the song", "It was really popular". But I guess it's the same with Moves Like Jagger and I Gotta Feeling, I won't be able to explain to people in the future why those songs were such big hits, apart from saying generic things like "Lots of people liked it I guess". It's not like Someone Like You where I can explain to people why it was such a huge success.

Just 2001 Rob, this was released in March 01 and Angel June 01.

I read that it was released in 2000 on Wikipedia, and just took it to mean it was #1 here in 2000, my bad!

I can appreciate I Gotta Feeling, but it really has been utterly MURDERED by overplay, more so than any song in recent memory I think, so hearing it once in a while is more than enough
People are very trigger happy with 2004.

"It was 2004 when this song came out..."

"It was 2002!" THANK YOU GARETH. At last :D

I think it was released somewhere else in the world in 2000 first I think as it charted on import before briefly, but released in March 01 in the UK.

And HA at Gareth correcting Gregg!

So these figures are up to last week i.e 28.04.12 so adele overtook Gareth last week- means we can be VERY specific about Gareth's sales now!
I thought gareth lost his stammer

You never completely lose it, more control it. Fair play to him though, he sounded pretty fluent.

Gareth on the show - he's still alive?!

Not surprised at Adele being #2, Fearne gave it away when she said she expected the #2 but was shocked at the #1 - if she'd expected Gareth she would have expected Will too :P Great to see Adele pipping Gareth!

03. Gareth Gates - Unchained Melody

Peak // #1 (2002)

It's bizarre that such a basic, boring cover of a song, that it seems unbelievable it's #3 of the millenium, despite him not even winning the competition he came from? I guess that goes to show how popular Pop Idol was at the time. And, when this was around - I was always told I looked like Gareth Gates because I had very spikey hair. True fact. Not sure what else to say on this to be honest.

For the first time since 2002, Will and Gareth no longer have the 2 biggest songs of the century!
Adele ahead of Gareth then! I guess its for the best, this is a weak cover version. My family were very much pro-Gareth so I think I might have this on CD at home!

Tell me about it I have had one, I have now controlled it, but not the way Gareth Did, I did it my own way.

Will all the way for me - I do like it when an underdog wins.

As recently as 2008 I honestly thought they'd remain there all century...I couldn't see anything selling anywhere near much anymore.

But with Adele's success you never know...the biggest seller of the century could come at any moment! Hopefully in our lifetime :P

It is rather basic, but I quite like this version to be honest. Always liked Gareth's voice, it's a shame he couldn't handle his career better (he was young, I suppose).

I'd expect them to slip back further as downloads take over. I can't imagine either song picks up many 'catalogue' sales. Will Young even publicly hates 'Evergreen' and rarely performs it.
