03. Gareth Gates - Unchained Melody

It's bizarre that such a basic, boring cover of a song, that it seems unbelievable it's #3 of the millenium, despite him not even winning the competition he came from? I guess that goes to show how popular Pop Idol was at the time. And, when this was around - I was always told I looked like Gareth Gates because I had very spikey hair. True fact. Not sure what else to say on this to be honest.

Many of the girls I knew at the time were genuinely in love with both of them, so if that was the case across the whole population, I can understand the sales they got.

It is rather basic, but I quite like this version to be honest. Always liked Gareth's voice, it's a shame he couldn't handle his career better (he was young, I suppose).

I've warmed to him a lot, at the time he was so over-hyped that I (probably unfairly) disliked him. Now he seems to be quite chilled out with his decline in fame, and has carved out a decent theatre/musical career for himself.

I'd expect them to slip back further as downloads take over. I can't imagine either song picks up many 'catalogue' sales. Will Young even publicly hates 'Evergreen' and rarely performs it.

He hates Anything Is Possible as well apparently, which is a shame as it is a great song :(

November 2004 was the month the occ started tracking download sales, although they weren't incorporated into the chart until the following year. That's the only significant thing I can think about that date.

02. Adele - Someone Like You

Peak // #1 (2011)

Wow, what a year for Adele it was in 2011 - it was incredible to see our very own British artist, just blow up in front of our very eyes. I don't think anybody saw her success coming the way it has. But, Adele at #2 in something? It feels like this is the first time in like 60 weeks I've seen Adele not #1 in something. Bit of an exagguration, but that Adele reign just won't let up etc. We all know this got big after that mesmerising BRIT Awards performance, but who saw it racing to become the 2nd biggest song of the century in just a year? Not me, but fair play, as it is a stunning song!

I like Will Young, but I would have liked to have seen Adele beat him. I know she has enough awards as it is, I would just like to see something other than a cover be #1.

Kill me for this but I've never particularly liked this...I can see why people do, but it's never done anything for me.

However, given the massive cultural impact it's had it's definitely deserved this high position and honestly wouldn't mind it climbing to the top in the future.

dose he :o its one of my faves from him. do you know why?

As recently as 2008 I honestly thought they'd remain there all century...I couldn't see anything selling anywhere near much anymore.

But with Adele's success you never know...the biggest seller of the century could come at any moment! Hopefully in our lifetime :P

If it's true what some people think about streaming taking over soon, then songs probably won't be "selling" for that much longer. I think digital sales might start going into decline in a few years, but obviously it's quite possible a big hit from now, or in the near future can outsell it.

"Someone Like You" sounds so much better sandwiched between the Pop Idol tracks. Just as well it was "Stan" and "Killing In The Name" at #1 and #3!
How far behind is SLY in terms of sales to #1? I think it'll definitely get there eventually. Like she will do in UK's biggest album of all time.

Will all the way for me - I do like it when an underdog wins.

Will definitely won on the singles output

I don't think there are any words left to be said for Adele - amazing success and well deserved (even if a little overexposed)

He sees it as a song that was forced on him apparently and not in his style (which is true on both counts!).

Does anyone know how far SLY is from reaching the number one? Quite a lot I should imagine, but if it continues to retain its high position in the chart it may not be too far away.

EDIT: Damn, beaten to it.

I think Will is on approx 1.7 million+ so maybe about 500k? Gezza will confirm in the first post :D

About 300k, so it'll take an aeon to get there. Gotye is probably more likely tbh.

And then another three million or so before she beats Candle In The Wind '97 :P
