Boring

I thought they were already doing one to be honest

Edited by AcerBen

I like the idea. Not that I use streaming services very much but I'm sure it'll be interesting... in some way.

Anyway, this is hardly pointless, most other countries already incorporate streaming into their charts in some way, time for us to catch up. And it's not changing the standard sales charts we seem to pride so much at all. Seems like I'm the only one not underwhelmed so far though.

The most streamed artist of 2012 is Ed Sheeran, on that note... goodnight.
Well that was exciting. OTOH it explains why it was at midnight, long after the early editions of the newspapers have gone to press. That said, it will be an interesting chart as long as it doesn't contribute to the real chart.
Well, I'm just glad its not being included with the official charts, I suppose it will be interesting to see but I assume it will just be dominated by Justin Bieber/Ed Sheeran/*insert new current boyband* et al.
What is a streaming chart?

A chart based on people listening to songs on sites like Spotify and We7. Basically it means people listening to songs and either paying a subscription or listening to adverts every few songs.

Well... that was exciting, :nocheer:

I'm quite relieved, myself - if/when streaming is incorporated into the main chart, I would no longer be able to calculate my YTD charts.

I think it's pointless to just have a top 20 artist streaming chart. It should at least have been a weekly chart of the most streamed songs - doesn't make sense to just have the artists in it...
So now tightwads and skinflints have a chart that they can fill with rubbish. Wonderful.

I thought they already did a streaming chart aswell. Someone on here linked me to one a while ago (in that thread with the statement from the OCC explaining why they'll only ever include sales in the official chart, and never streaming). It was on the OCC's website, and it was dominated by Emeli Sande, Ed Sheeran, Adele, Coldplay, etc.

The US streaming chart is pretty similar to their official chart really, except most of the electropop songs are much lower on streaming that they are in sales.

If this is a big announcement then wonder what would a small announcement be like. New chair at the office?

You can check the chart already by looking at the most played songs on Spotify and/or We7.

This is the Press release.

Music streaming will come of age next week when the UK industry comes together to launch the first Official Streaming Chart!

The new Top 100 rundown will be compiled by the Official Charts Company with data from the nation’s leading streaming services - including Spotify, Deezer, Napster, We7, Zune (XBox Live) and new mobile phone start-up ChartsNow - supported by the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) and record labels association The BPI. The Official Streaming Chart will be the first chart which ranks audio streams from both ad-funded and subscription streaming services in the UK, to reflect the growing interest in this new generation of music services.

The first Official Streaming Top 100 will be unveiled at 13:00 hrs on Monday May 14, 2012 at www.officialcharts.com. It will also be published weekly in music industry business title Music Week and feature on the streaming services contributing to the chart each week.

Ed Sheeran is the runaway leader as most-streamed artist of 2012 so far (up to the end of April). He is followed by Lana Del Rey, David Guetta and Rihanna. Sheeran’s performance is lead by his tracks Drunk, Lego House and The A Team, which are all among the 20 most-streamed tracks of 2012 to date.

Ed Sheeran commented, “Amazing to hear that I am the most streamed act of 2012. Streaming services and online in general have always been an important way for me to get music out to my fans. A new Official Streaming Chart that recognises another way of enjoying music can only be a good thing.”

The most-streamed track of the year so far is Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye FT Kimbra, ahead of David Guetta FT Sia’s Titanium and Jessie J’s Domino.

Below is the Official Streaming Chart’s Top 20 most streamed artists of 2012 to date, with the Official Singles Chart’s most purchased artists of 2012 to date alongside for comparison.

I have highlighted in Big what I am going to compare to.
