Midweek Charts: Tenacious D head tight battle to top UK albums chart

Source: MW

16:20 | Wednesday May 16, 2012

By Paul Williams

Jack Black’s band Tenacious D lead a very open race to top the UK artist albums chart this weekend with releases by Keane, Ren Harvieu and Emeli Sande all within touching distance.

The group’s Columbia-issued album Rize Of the Fenix was just a few hundred sales in front at the close of business on Tuesday, according to the Official Charts Company, with Keane’s Strangeland dropping 1-2 and fellow Island act Ren Harvieu’s debut album Through The Night around 1,000 sales behind as a new entry in third position.

Although only in fourth position in the latest midweeks, having been runner-up on last Sunday’s chart, Virgin act Emeli Sande is also in contention with Our Version Of Events. It is about 3,000 sales behind Tenacious D at present and is joined in the top five in fifth place by Garbage’s first studio album since 2005’s Bleed Like Me. Not Your Kind Of People, released on their own Stun Volume label through Cooperative, looks like keeping up their 100% Top 10 run achieved by their four three previous studio sets.

XL’s Adele album 21 drops 4-6 at this stage of the week, while Bella Union-handled Baltimore band Beach House will achieve their first ever UK Top 75 hit with fourth album Bloom, which is currently ranked as a new entry at seven.

Sales of RCA act Rebecca Ferguson’s album Heaven are up 43.9% on the week following her performance on Britain’s Got Talent, although it drops 6-8, while Asylum/Atlantic’s Ed Sheeran climbs 11-9 with + and Island artist Gotye slips 8-10 with Making Mirrors.

Another Island album, Ben Howard’s Every Kingdom, enjoys a 58% week-on-week sales lift to progress 21-11 as the cut Only Love moves 80-38 on the singles midweeks, while Epic’s latest Glee Cast album Glee – The Music – The Graduation Album crops up as a new entry at 15.

Other albums set to debut in the chart this Sunday include former A-ha frontman Morten Harket’s Wrasse-issued solo set Out Of My Hands, a Decca best of from UK Eurovision hopeful Engelbert Humperdinck, plus releases from Columbia’s Gossip and Santana and Mercury’s Niki & The Dove.

Columbia/Roc Nation’s Rita Ora is likely to spend a second week leading the singles chart with R.I.P. featuring Tinie Tempah, while there are only around 1,300 sales separating the four tracks behind it. Polydor act the Saturdays’ newly-issued 30 Days is presently placed second, Interscope/Polydor’s former number one Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen holds at three and Fun featuring Janelle Monae’s Atlantic/Fueled By Ramen-issued We Are Young moves back up 5-4 to swap places with Island act Alex Clare’s Too Close in fifth place.

There are two other new releases showing up among the Top 10 positions at this stage of the week with Mercury act D’Banj’s Oliver Twist ninth and Polydor’s Scissor Sisters 10th with Only The Horses, which they performed on last Sunday’s The Voice results show. Def Jam/Mercury’s Rihanna with Where Have You Been and Columbia’s Train with Drive By complete the latest midweeks Top 10, moving 8-7 and 6-8 respectively.

Syco act Labrinth’s Express Yourself moves 34-16 following his semi-final performance on Britain’s Got Talent, while EMI’s US country act Rascal Flatts are heading for their first-ever UK hit after their track Bless The Broken Road was covered by contestant Sam Kelly in the ITV1 show’s final last Saturday. Placed 76th on last Sunday’s chart thanks to buying immediately after the show aired, it now climbs to 20 on the midweeks.

Skepta’s Make Peace Not War, issued through 3 Beat/AATW/Boy Better Know, will debut in the Top 40 on Sunday, but Madonna’s new Interscope/Polydor single Girl Gone Wild could miss it as it is currently new at 49 on the midweeks.

Midweek Charts update: Keane now out in front

Source: MW

Friday May 18, 2012

By Paul Williams

Keane have nudged ahead of Tenacious D in a tight race to top Sunday’s UK artist albums chart as Rita Ora leads singles sales.

Having been ahead at the start of the week, Tenacius D’s newly-issued Columbia album Rize Of The Fenix is now in second place, according to the Official Charts Company, with Keane’s Island-issued Strangeland fewer than 1,000 sales ahead in first place. The Keane album debuted at one on last Sunday’s chart.

Also still in contention to top the chart is Emeli Sande’s Virgin album Our Version Of Events which is the week so far’s third biggest album and around 3,400 sales behind Keane by the close of business on Thursday.

Ren Harvieu’s first Island album Through The Night is showing up as a new entry at four at this point in the week, while Adele’s XL album 21 drops 4-5 and Garbage’s Not Your Kind Of People, which is released on their Stun Volume label, new at six.

The singles market is also pretty close with Columbia/Roc Nation’s Rita Ora featuring Tinie Tempah single R.I.P. around 6,000 sales out in front. It may well be overtaken on Sunday by Fun featuring Janelle Moae’s Atlantic/Fueled By Ramen single We Are Young, which is showing a 5-2 move on the midweeks and its sales down only a modest 5% on the week compared to 50% for R.I.P.

Carly Rae Jepsen’s Interscope/Polydor single Call Me Maybe holds at three and Island act Alex Clare remains fourth with Too Close, while the Saturdays lead three new entries among the Top 10 positions at this stage of the week with their Polydor single 30 Days new at five. Mercury’s D’Banj single Oliver Twist is new at nine and Polydor act Scissor Sisters new at 10 with Only The Horses.

Rita seems set for a second week at #1, that's good, I like to see a few #1s sticking around, her sales for this week are probably looking less than 85k though, if she opened up with 105k for last week.

As for the album #1, I don't have a clue, Tenacious D is #1 on the iTunes album chart, Keane could hold on for a second week. Ben Howard's album seems to be having second wind possibility looking at a top 10 peak.

Bless This Broken Road was BGT, not The Voice. Awful either way.

And I actually think that with the EP sales, Scissor Sisters would be top 10 today, they might be tomorrow but they'll have to be happy with #14-17 on Sunday probably :(

Rochelle just Tweeted saying Our Midweek is Super Super Good..Reckon they could be at #3 so may even secure a top 5 come sunday if they stick at 7/8.

Edited by Mr. C. Joel

Rita Ora's lead is about 20% on iTunes over Carly Rae Jepsen, which to me suggests she'll struggle to top 70k. Will be nice to see Skrillex enter as well.

As for the albums, prior to it going to #1 on iTunes I'd assumed Tenacious D would limp into the top 5 - would be a brilliant result if "Rize of the Fenix" could reach the top.

Where do people in the industry get their midweek data from?

Popjustice, lol. It'd tie in with what Rochelle said on twitter about their midweeks being "really really good".

I'll ask them at their signing later, lol.

Scissor Sisters are at 10 according to their twitter page

*.*

It WILL do a Primadonna though :(

Woo, I was hoping to see D'banj's position today :D #8 is great, should easily hold onto the top 10 and hopefully at least #9.
