KYLIE MINOGUE- SLOW- NON NUMBER ONE

NEW PEAK POSITION: 2

I refuse to believe that No-one saw Kylie's relegation coming. "Slow" was very fortunate to make No 1 at all, it sold a mere 43k, the lowest total since that August, and falling 1-4-12 and selling just 75k in those 3 weeks is not the stuff that even 2003 chart toppers were made of.

I didn't see it coming because I had forgotten it existed.

Surprised that Changes didn't get demoted, considering it was released just 1 week before Mad World.

By the skin of its teeth- 3k!

I didn't see it coming because I had forgotten it existed.

this  a real WTF number 1 there, I guess she could just sell on name alone at that point

'Leave Right Now'

Has always been one of my fave pop singles of the '00s, and now Will Young has booted the musical nightmare that was 'Mandy' off the top here gives me even more reason to adore the song. :D

To think at the time, Shane Ritchie almost got the no. 1 spot with 'I'm Your Man'. :manson:

SAM & MARK- WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS/ MEASURE OF A MAN- NON NUMBER ONE

NEW PEAK POSITION: 2

Dreadful sales ensue in 2004 as we start to hit the sales trough that was the mid 00s, miserable opening weeks become the norm and here Pop Idol failures Sam & Mark are the first suffer the fall with their version of the Beatles classic. It was actually the third time the track had mad the top but a fall of 1-2-13 tells its own tale and certainly not enough to match the 100k + opening sale of "Mysterious Girl" just weeks later.

BUSTED- WHO'S DAVID?- NON NUMBER ONE

NEW PEAK POSITION: 5

...And Andre's big opening week also puts paid to Busted's third chart topper "Who's David?". Barely scrapping the 30k mark it topped the charts thanks to a quiet week and a performance of "Teenage Kicks" on the BRITS which appears on the B-Side to this, but poor sales and one of the quickest decents in the last 10 years (1-4-18) allows Andre's record to become the first to debut at the top in 2004.

BRITNEY SPEARS- TOXIC- NON NUMBER ONE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/0e/Britney_Spears_-_Toxic.jpg

NEW PEAK POSITION: 2

Here's a shocker! Until know Britney has maintained all her No 1 hits on this thread but one of the more famous ones is the first to fall spending three weeks at No 2 on this thread- so how come? Well firstly it struggled against Andre who had a better first week sale and held up better in the second week than Spears, and secondly it was by week 3 of its run outsold by DJ Casper. A comparison of the latter two discs first four weeks tells this story, "Toxic" moving 1-2-4-6 whilst "Cha Cha Slide" maintained a 2-1-2-2 chart placing, the 24k lead that Britney had in week one erroded by week 3.

Toxic is a bit of a shocker. I fear the no.1s in 2004 may look even naffer under this system-and it's not full of classics as it is!

I kind of expected Toxic to be here - it's Spice Up Your Life and Stan all over again (on a lesser sales scale, obviously).

To be honest, I don't really care much about 2004 here. Really a nadir year for chart toppers, particularly once we reach August where I say with complete seriousness that Ja Rule is actually my favourite #1 from then to the rest of 2004, and it's not even THAT good, and then we have the likes of Call On Me which is one of the worst #1s of all-time in my opinion.

That being said, my one wish is for Dry Your Eyes to keep its status. That's not asking for much, is it, Gezza? :D

Sam & Mark and Busted getting demoted to non no. 1 status.

'Toxic' also becoming a non #1

Pfft, I guess 2004 was one of the bigger years for I'm A Celebrity hence the big sales for Greasy Andre. :puke: Shame about 'Toxic' although it did decrease its sales by half when it dropped 01-02, so it's no surprise DJ Casper ended up the bigger seller after 3 weeks.

2004 was generally awful - the only 2 I really like are Toxic (GRR) and Lola's Theme.

There was an interesting discussion about 2004 on here at the end of last year - received opinion seems to be that singles-wise, yep it was dire, one of the worst years for music in my lifetime. At the time I'd completely turned my back on chart music and was listening to underground trance and hard house and stuff.

But album-wise, virtually every classic album of the 21st century was released that year :P Scissor Sisters, Franz Ferdinand, Snow Patrol, Killers, Keane, Green Day and countless more! Shame it wasn't reflected at the top of the singles chart...

I haven't heard 'The Streets' for years, hope they can keep their number 1 status, same with Lola's Theme. Loved both songs back in the summer 2004.
'Toxic' was one of my favourite #1s of 2004, as well as 'Everytime'. That may sound a bit "Britney loon", but the majority of the other '04 #1s leave a lot to be desired. :o

Aah, 2004 was a horrid year for #1s. Looking at that list, there are so many awful records there and the only ones I really like are the two Britneys (which are my standout favourites and I'm not even a huge Britney fan), Lola's Theme, Nat Bedingfied and maybe Yeah! and I'll Stand By You if I wasn't being picky.

But eh at Toxic being demoted, that makes me lose all most hope for this year. I've been following this thread since the beginning, will probably be able to get a little more involved now.

I also have a feeling that some of my favourite chart toppers in 2005 are going to get demoted under this system. :(

Not to mention Arcade Fire, Kasabian and loads more. If you took one single from each of the albums you mentioned and stuck it at #1 for a week or two it would have made a brilliant list. Give me Laura, Take Me Out, Run, Mr. Brightside, Somewhere Only We Know and Boulevard of Broken Dreams over Frankee and Eamon any day of the week.

Me and pop had a bad breakup in 2004. We were seeing other people/genres for a while, but met by chance again in 2008 and we've been inseperable ever since. The demotion of 3 Of A Kind's vile Babycakes would really help heal the pain.

Yeah, I think 2004 was a lot better than what it looks from the number 1s list (and the number 2s list for that matter too :drama: ), its a shame that most of them were just either quick fanbase buys, songs by already popular artists or complete of-the-moment hype that would sound naff anywhere when played now.

The only ones I'd still listen to now are Yeah, Dry Your Eyes, Toxic, Vertigo, These Words & Lola's Theme and to an extent the McFly songs as well, I'm pretty sure quite a few of those will be demoted

There were loads of great singles in 2004 they just didn't get to number 1.
