It was a kinda bizarre No 1 when it deposed Eric Prydz's "Call On Me" back in October 2004 but no such luck here where that unwelcome interruption to Prydz's run is not repeated. "Call On Me" returned to No 1 after Robbie's one week, though its sales continued to create new weekly lows for sales of No 1 record, Williams performed even worse dropping 1-3-9 and was nowhere to be seen in the Y/E top 40 for the year.

Yes we're entering into one of the singles chart's bleakest times when the No 1 single could barely scrape the 20k mark. A sale of just 23k was enough to take Ja Rule to the top in Late 04, but not here where it ties up with the later releases by Eminem, Destiny's Child and Britney who all keep Ja Rule outside the top 3. In the real world the single fell 1-6-11 and this was his penultimate appearance in the charts ever (strange fact).

 

U2- VERTIGO- NON NUMBER ONE

A new U2 album used to result in the guarantee that the lead single was going to hit No 1 (since 1988 anyway) and so in 2004 it proved to be the case as well. "Vertigo" was one of the first singles I can recall where talk was that a lot of sales had been "lost" through the track being downloaded (I've no idea how much) but it was supposedly No 1 on the download chart which had just started being compiled at this point if that means much (downloads did not overtake CD sales until early 2005 so the fact CD singles were selling quite poorly shows downloads were minimal also, but equally that they could easily have swung a No 1 spot had they been included). Anyway here both Girls Aloud and Destiny's Child kept U2 distant from that no 1 place.

 

2004 was such a strange and weird time for music! It's also my favourite year for music. :wub:

What ever happened to Ja Rule? If Nelly could come out of years of semi-obscurity and get a big hit with 'Just A Dream' I could see Ja Rule having success again if he comes back with the right song.

 

EDIT: Oh, he released an album earlier this year and it got to the dizzy heights of #197 on the US Billboard 200. How the somewhat mighty have fallen!

I don't think we've finished 2004 yet. Gezza hasn't posted the full "adapted" list.

 

Maybe the last part of 2004 is Girls Aloud getting demoted with Destiny's Child taking their place... it would probably make sense as Girls Aloud only sold 57k in its first week (and Destiny's Child would have had a week extra on it that week) and then Band Aid would have eaten into its second week.

 

Anyway, impossible for anyone to disagree with those three demotions there. Two career lows from Robbie and U2 (though I did buy Vertigo at the time, baffingly, and then listened to it like twice - I guess that makes me as bad as the rest of the public!! :o) that found no appeal outside of their own fanbases.

It would be quite likely for GA to get demoted and for DC to get a week. Band Aid 20 would hamper GA's chances also with quarter of a million sold for every week at no.1.

On a selfish level I would be quite happy if Destiny's Child didn't get promoted. I used to be a big fan of theirs in 1999/2000 but Lose My Breath was a MASSIVE irritant. Too cluttered for me. Realistically though it was probably the only genuine hit around in November 2004.

I liked Robbie's Radio. It reminded me of David Bowie and was more interesting than his usual stuff. This was the start of his interesting era.

As many thought the only real hit around in November 2004 was indeed Destiny's Child "Lose My Breath". It spent 4 weeks at No 2 in the real world but on this thread it becomes the first promotion that lasts more than one week, and come the Y/E 04 it had outsold all the tracks that prevented its official No 1 status.

You lot are getting too good at this! Yes some forsore that GA would get demoted, outflanked by Destiny's Child in week one and crushed by Band Aid 20's massive first week sales in its second week, they get squeezed out of their second chart topper, even by the end of 2004 the single had sold a total of 144k a whole 100k less than Band Aid 20's first week alone.
