Midweek Charts: Plan B no match for dominant Now! 82

Source: MW

by Paul Williams

Plan B is heading for his second UK artist albums chart-topper, but he is being comprehensively outsold by the latest Now! compilation, which is outperforming the top 30 artist titles combined.

The 679/Atlantic set Ill Manors heads a top four in the artist albums market which at this stage of the week is exclusively made up of brand new releases with Gaslight Anthem second, Joss Stone third and Jennifer Lopez fourth, according o the Official Charts Company.

However, the big sales news of the week belongs to EMI TV/UMTV's newly-issued Now! 82, which had already reached around 115,000 sales up to the end of trading on Tuesday, more than five times as many copies as Plan B's album shifted over the same period.

In the artist album rankings the Plan B set currently has a sales lead of around 70% over second-placed Handwritten by Mercury's Gaslight Anthem. The album is on course to become the New Jersey act's highest-peaking release yet in the UK, easily beating the number 18 peak achieved by their last album American Slang in 2010.

Joss Stone, meanwhile, should register in the UK Top 10 for the first time since her 2004 chart-topper Mind, Body & Soul with her Warner Bros debut The Soul Sessions - Vol 2 currently showing up as a new entry at three. The first Soul Sessions album reached numebr four in 2004, while her last album LP1 charted and peaked at 36 last year.

Jennifer Lopez completest the all-new top four with her RCA-handled retrospective Dance Again - The Hits currently in fourth position, two positions higher than her last studio set, Love?, reached last year.

As a consequence of the new albums registering so high, a number of last week's big hitters have made steep falls in this new chart week. They include the Mercury-issued Elton John Vs Pnau album Good Morning To The Night which debuted at one last Sunday but is now only the 12th best seller and Sony's Paul Simon re-issue Graceland dropping 4-13.

Only one album in last Sunday's Top 10 is showing a sales increase: the discounted Talk That Talk by Def Jam/Mercury's Rihanna with its tally up 21% week-on-week as it holds at six in the midweeks. Ahead of it, A&M/Octone/Polydor's Maroon 5 drop 2-5 with Overexposed, while Ed Sheeran's Asylum/Atlantic album + falls 5-7 and Frank Ocean's Def Jam/Mercury set Channel Orange slips 3-8 in the week so far. Meanwhile, sales of Hans Zimmer's soundtrack to The Dark Knight Rises are up 77% as the Sony Classical album moves 36-9 in the rankings. Columbia act Train complete the Top 10 with California 37 dropping 9-10.

Roadrunner act Slipknot register as a new entry at 16 with Antennas To Hell in the latest midweeks, while Atlantic act Rumer's Boys Don't Cry is responding to TV advertising with its sales lifting 54% to move 42-22. And in the week of the Olympics opening Chariots Of Fire composer Vangelis is new at 39 with the Rhino-issued The Collection.

On singles Island's Florence + The Machine is bidding for a third week at number one with Spectrum currently around 5,000 sales ahead of its closest challenger, Payphone by Maroon 5 featuring Wiz Khalifa. Parlophone act Conor Maynard's newly-issued second single Vegas Girl is new at three as Stooshe's Warner Bros-issued Black Heart progresses 5-4 and Atlantic act Flo Rida gains a notch to five with Whistle.

Heading downwards at this stage of the week is Chris Brown whose RCA single Don't Wake Me Up falls 3-6, while Interscpe/Polydor's This Is Love by will.i.am featuring Eva Simons slips 4-7 and Asylum/Black Better's Rudimental featuring John Newman with This Is Love goes down 7-8. Also dropping a place to nine is the Parlophone track Princess Of China by Coldplay & Rihanna, while former chart-topper We Are Young by Atlantic/Fueled By Ramen's Fun featuring Janelle Monae is bidding for a Top 10 return, moving on the current Sales Flashes 12-10.

RCA's US pop duo Karmin are set for their first UK hit with Brokenhearted showing up as a new entry at 11 in the week to date, while other new arrivals come from Miami-based French DJ Cedric Gervais with his 3 Beat/AATW set Molly and French electronic producer Madeon with his Popcultur/Columbia-issued Finale. They appear as new entries at 26 and 28 respectively in the week so far.

Midweek Charts update: Florence heading for third week at No 1

Source: MW

by Paul Willams

Florence + The Machine's Spectrum is on course to become only the third single this year to spend more than two weeks at No 1 as it continues to hold off Maroon 5's Payphone.

The Island track had reached 46,000 sales by the end of business on Thursday, according to the Official Charts Company, around 10,000 copies ahead of Interscope/Polydor's Payphone featuring Wiz Khalifa in second place. Virgin act Conor Maynard's second single Vegas Girl is registering as a new entry at three with Warner Bros act Stooshe's Black Heart climbing 5-4 and the Atlantic track Whistle by Flo Rida rising 6-5. The RCA-handled Brokenhearted by Karmin is new at 9.

On albums the EMI TV/UMTV compilation Now! 82 is rapidly heading towards 200,000 sales in its first week of release, hitting the 188,000 mark by the end of Thursday, while 679/Atlantic's Plan B is set for an instant No 1 on the artist albums listings with the soundtrack to Ill Manors. Three other brand new albums are immediately below it: Mercury act Gaslight Anthem's Handwritten in second place, the RCA retrospective Dance Again - The Hits by Jennifer Lopez at 3 and Joss Stone's Warner Bros debut The Soul Aessions - Vol 2 at 4. A&M/Octone/Polydor's Maroon 5 complete the top five sellers with Overexposed falling 2-5 at this stage of the week, while Elton John and Pnau's Mercury pairing Good Morning To The Night now looks like retaining its Top 10 status on this coming Sunday's final chart, having dropped 1-12 on midweek listings earlier this week. It is currently the eighth biggest artist album of the week.

Looks like Florence is looking comfortably for a third week on iTunes at the moment :D she should get the #1.

Plan B should get the #1 album, hopefully the album can amass 50k plus in sales for the week.

Hope plan b can do well in terms of sales - wonder how the cd release will make channel orange react - maybe up the top 10!??

I was thinking sales between 40k-50k, but I worry that it will be just over 30k.

I fear that too but hopefully he can bring enough of his fanbase from his last album along to break 50k!

I think by deduction, Plan B obviously have the #1 album, its a bit manic on their twitter page.

think American Slang was No3 in midweeks as well wasn't it? Handwritten is a great album that I bought myself but it's obviously frontloaded which might keep it out of the top 10

shame as these guys deserve to break big over here and in the US, AS was top 20 in the Billboard chart so maybe Handwritten might give them their first US top ten album

The Gaslight Anthem’s New Album ‘Handwritten’ At Number 2 In Album Chart Today!

Source: Rock Sound

Posted Tuesday, 24 July 2012

The Gaslight Anthem

The Gaslight AnthemThe Gaslight Anthem's new record 'Handwritten' is currently riding high in the UK album chart.

Today it occupies the number two slot ahead of Rhianna, Ed Sheeran, Frank Ocean and Joss Stone and behind Plan B's recent 'Ill Manors'

The band are approximately 5,000 sales behind the top placed album, we'll keep you informed on chart position as the week rolls on.

==================

So:

1 Plan B (5k ahead)

2 Gaslight Anthem

3 Rihanna

4 Ed Sheeran

5 Frank Ocean

6 Joss Stone Soul Sessions 2

Not necessarily in that order, it just says Gaslight Anthem are ahead of them. I would say they would all be in the Top 10, but perhaps not in that order.

You are probably right, I can't find anything else on twitter regarding the singles at the moment or any confirmation of Joss Stone's album to clarify the above, if anyone else wants to try, just type midweeks or the artist name in the twitter search option. I'm off to lunch...

You know Plan B is a "him" not a "they"? B-)

That seems unlikely in the extreme, given the sales climate, plus the fact that rap albums rarely sell well in the UK at the best of times.

I'm hopeful that with all-round sales so bad that they can hold on to #5 or 6 come Sunday. Of course, the inevitable plummet the following week won't be so nice to see!
