it's kind of interesting reading some of the posts in this thread and seeing some of you frame trump's rise as a result of class-based anger. like, you're not wrong, but class-based anger in the US almost always tips into racial anxiety and white supremacy, which, from here, always felt like the predominant story re: his rise. maybe it's just my perspective as a poc, idk. but it's just a bit jarring when i see trump supporters being referred to in this thread as simply "people", because my mind always adds a mental footnote: *white people.

also i wish i could post more in this thread but i have no idea how to respond to the fatalism/actual betting some of you guys are doing, because as a gay immigrant kid, i'm f***ing terrified. and idk like. we're out here and we still exist and until votes are actually cast, this is still a contest. and this isn't a reprimand or anything, just a small plea to maybe give the women and poc and immigrants and lgbt here a ✌️ or two, or not to underestimate our electoral power too much. maybe that's corny but i feel corniness is excused when you have an actual fascist as one of your presidential candidates.

SO hope you're right, and power to the sane, thoughtful, decent people in the USA - cos I still want to do my bucket-list "Paul"-styled drive across the USA (and I don't mind meeting any aliens of any meaning of the term). We're all a bit jaded and cynical over here after recent referendum results....
I suppose this has become a little DOOM AND GLOOM the last few pages to be sure and I really do hope Hillary wins (not just because she isn't Trump, but because I actively WANT HER), but I just cannot see it happening unless something big changes.
Hillary's unfavourable ratings are now the same as Trump's, and she actually has lower favourability among Democrats than Trump does among Republicans (!)

This is getting into quite worrying territory now.

Trump's only going to rise in popularity as people get convinced it's a good thing. It's like Brexit.

The personal attacks from his camp are only going to get more intense and guess what? He will try every trick in the book, because that's what he does. I said it a few weeks ago, still not convinced that the Democrats will win. It will be close, but Trump's popularity will likely surge. Only way to stop him will be for people to rally against him and vote Clinton..

I just don't understand all these attacks on Hilary. She's a bloody good pick. She's tough, she's a grafter and she's got a proven track record. In such a time of uncertainty, it's exactly what the US needs.

If you're going to start discounting her for her past anti-LGBT stance, then you're left with about 4 politicians GLOBALLY to vote for.

And holy f***ing jesus, anyone who looks at this pair and thinks Trump is the better choice should be shoved on a rocket with him and FIRED INTO THE SUN.

I think a lot of it, is people don't trust her. Oh and a lot of Americans really hate the Status Quo.. especially the ones in the States no-one really cares about. There's a lot of hurt and anger around the country as globalisation has had a huge effect on them. Not that Trump is going to make anything better, but like Brexit, people will cling to anything. I don't like her and I don't like Trump. But I'm not an American citizen so it's not my vote.

The next few months will be interesting, as I think we'll start to see a few people who you wouldn't think in a million years would ever endorse Trump and/or the Republicans give him their backing, at which point you'll know for sure that he's on course for a win.

It's getting to the point that it looks like the only way Trump won't be president is if he is assassinated before the election, which the way things are going unfortunately isn't that unlikely. There has already been one attempt made on his life during the campaign (by a Brit, although in the irony of all ironies he couldn't follow through with it because he made his attempt at a Republican event where guns were banned), and continuing comparison of Trump to Hitler is handing millions of people the moral imperative to take his life. After all, if you asked people if they could travel back to the 30s to kill Hitler and stop the horrific things he did, most people would take that opportunity*, and if Trump really is the next Hitler, well, you can see where this is going.

* I should point out that many historians have argued that even without Hitler, some other German leader would have taken his place and caused the horrors of the 30s and the 2nd World War due to the circumstances of the time.

Thing is, I don't think Trump himself is that dangerous. It's more his followers that are dangerous, self vigilantes wanting to take down jihadists, Black Lives Matter etc. - they stereotype people and spread unrest and hate. These are the dangerous people, who can't the irony of what they're doing.

Since when were a few celebrities any bellwether at all?

Panic if it's still the same in two weeks. Judging the polls coming after one convention and before another is probably the worst time in the entire year to try and gauge how the election will go.
Also this is the sentence that confirms the Tea Party won in the end.

(Compare and contrast the Labour leadership contest in 2020 when moderates all line up to swear allegiance to Lisa Nandy.)

This all happened far too quickly.

Oh look, someone can say the word connections a few times. Guess I'd better vote for an open fascist!!!!!!!!!!!!

The polls have indeed already begun to swing back to Hillary somewhat, but the individual state polls for most of the main battleground states are generally less positive than nationwide polling. Yes, she's ahead in most at the moment, but in almost every case it's well within the margin of error and I think we're definitely at the point where she has the harder task to win people over than Trump.

WHEN HE HAS SAVES AMERICA?

Bye.

He is only up in the polls because the Bernie or Busts (me included at one point) are having a hissy fit over Clinton being the nomination and are flocking to Trump in protest as a scare tactic. His numbers will fall MAJORLY as soon as we hit the debates and people are running on sense and not emotions.

Babes, by saying you're voting Johnson you'd still count in the polls as a Bernie or Bust Democrat rn!

I've already changed my mind, bitch. My hissy fit only lasted 6 hours amongst all of the ignorance. :')

That's why I said what I said.

The fact that the United States first female president could be Hillary Clinton just makes me want to vomit. Trump has to win in November.

But here let me spell this out for you, since some of you guys don't seem to get it. Right now the state of affairs in the country is extremely tense, we're practically in the beginning stages of a race war already. People are tired of slaving their lives away with nothing show for it. College graduates can't find jobs. Mass shootings are on the rise. A presidential candidate has ties to Russia and Vladimir Putin, North Korea supports his presidency, the KKK and other white supremest groups support his presidency. Even if he was very ineffectual as a President what his presidency gives license to is terrifying. He's telling people it is OK to hurt someone because they're different, it is OK to discriminate against people, black people deserve to be treated poorly, gay people don't deserve rights, trans people are disgusting and should be treated like monsters.

Trump's latest stunt - openly encouraging a foreign state to hack into his opponent's private e-mails - is yet another illustration of why this man should not be allowed anywhere near a position of power.
