November 25, 201212 yr FRIDAY- DANIEL BEDINGFIELD http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/68/Fridaydb.jpg PEAK POSITION: 28 SALES: 13K FOLLOW UP TO: NEVER GONNA LEAVE YOUR SIDE The final release from his debut album it was always gonna struggle but Bedingfield’s chart history had consisted of peak positions 1-4-1-6-1-28 for its singles. In short everyone who wanted the songs had, by this point, got the album (it had sold a million copies plus by now) and he just needed to stop! MORAL OF THE STORY: ONLY MICHAEL JACKSON, KATY PERRY, AND RIHANNA CAN LIFT 47 TOP 10 SINGLES FROM AN ALBUM OimHNoCgWCU Was gutted that this flopped after his amazing start in the charts but with the album selling so well it was never going to perform well - Hia follow up album was all kinds of greatness but flopped too - Love the stuff he is releasing now it's just a shame he's totally ignored now
November 25, 201212 yr FORGIVENESS- WRETCH 32 http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/32/Forgiveness_song.jpg PEAK POSITION: 49 SALES: 14K FOLLOW UP TO: DON'T GO It’s a game of rich karma here for Wretch, the demo of this featured the vocals of Emeli Sande who was replaced with Etta Bond and resulted in his first real chart failure since he hit it big. He also held off Sande’s debut solo single “Heaven” from getting to No 1 but here he pays the price for need heading my advice to Professor Green. MORAL OF THE STORY: SAME AS PROFESSOR GREEN uwwcLu93Ttw This was always an absolutely bizarre single choice - 'Hush Little Baby' was the obvious 4th single and I think it would have done a hell of a lot better than #35 if it'd been released in place of this. The fact it still managed to outpeak 'Forgiveness' despite being released months later is telling :P
November 25, 201212 yr The fact that Wretch 32 had a no.1 is still mindboggling for me-particularly since it held off the vastly superior Heaven and Moves Like Jagger to get there. That's the British public for you.
November 25, 201212 yr Wretch 22....random #1 "Don't Go" was - this was better but I am not keen on his music. Chico say no more. What was with all the kids in his videos? A bit Jimmy Saville-esque isn't it? Daniel Beddingfield...."Friday" what a ramble! We got the message she is comong back...end of lol
November 25, 201212 yr 'Don't Go' was one of the most mind numbingly boring chart toppers of 2011. How anyone managed to get through the entire song without slipping into a coma must be a miracle. Such a shame as I sort of like the bassline right at the start, but as soon as Josh Whatshecalledagain comes in with his bored, almost off pitch "don't go" vocal, I automatically switch it off.
November 25, 201212 yr Author FOOTSTEPS- STILTSKIN http://ring.cdandlp.com/timburton007/photo_grande/113882448.jpg PEAK POSITION: 34 SALES: 13K FOLLOW UP TO: INSIDE Scottish Grunge- honestly it was going to be the next big thing in 1994, certainly Levi thought so using a song called “Inside” on its advert for jeans which promptly made No 1. Sadly they are about 2 years late to the grunge bandwagon and Cobain was already dead when they briefly hit the big time- their career followed Cobain. MORAL OF THE STORY: BANDWAGONS ARE TIME LIMITED kylliYCYf_4
November 25, 201212 yr Author CLUB AT THE END OF THE STREET/ WHISPERS- ELTON JOHN http://991.com/newGallery/Elton-John-Club-At-The-End-O-330478.jpg PEAK POSITION: 47 SALES: 13K FOLLOW UP TO: SACRIFICE/ HEALING HANDS When Elton’s not being a bitch about Madonna he’s copying her, here using an animated video made by the same team who just months before had made her video for “Dear Jessie”. Perhaps the change in tempo from “Sacrifice” was too much for us but straight after his first solo No 1 hit of his 20 year old career he couldn’t even follow it up with a top 40 hit. MORAL OF THE STORY: IT’S POINTLESS RELEASING A DOUBLE A-SIDE WHEN NO-ONE LIKES EITHER rng0KRQJtJc
November 25, 201212 yr Author MEA CULPA PART II- ENIGMA http://images.uulyrics.com/cover/e/enigma/album-mea-culpa-pt-2.jpg PEAK POSITION: 55 SALES: 11K FOLLOW UP TO: SADNESS PART ONE I’ll tell you why this failed- it’s “Sadness Part 2” but with less tuneage. It’s also rubbish and the novelty had worn off. MORAL OF THE STORY: GOOD FOR ONE SINGLE BUT NOT A WHOLE CAREER y7M9CKLw9Wg
November 25, 201212 yr Author Awww, I like "Mea Culpa". :( Actrually having just litened it bears a very close resemblance to "Justify My Love" beat wise.
November 25, 201212 yr Wretch 22....random #1 "Don't Go" was - this was better but I am not keen on his music. Chico say no more. What was with all the kids in his videos? A bit Jimmy Saville-esque isn't it? lol ------------ I just realised that Wretch 32 has some BIG lips in that picture. Edited November 25, 201212 yr by Pablo Escobar
November 25, 201212 yr What was with all the kids in his videos? A bit Jimmy Saville-esque isn't it? You think that's Jimmy Savile-esque? I'd like to see what you think of the bit in The Darkness' Christmas Time (Don't Let The Bells End) when Justin Hawkins tells the kids to "come on, kids!" That's seriously creepy!
November 26, 201212 yr Author YOU’RE THE REASON- WAMDUE PROJECT http://991.com/newGallery/Wamdue-Project-Youre-The-Reason-449258.jpg PEAK POSITION: 39 SALES: 10K FOLLOW UP TO: KING OF MY CASTLE A dance team known for two things, firstly the No 1 “King Of My Castle” and secondly for being nominated for “Best British Newcomer” at the BRITS despite the principal (and only full time) member not coming from the UK. Once they had failed to keep Cliff Richard from No 1 they were no longer any use to us, hello obscurity- it’s like we’ve never been gone. MORAL OF THE STORY: ACCEPT THAT YOU’RE FIVE MINUTES OF FAME MAY LAST FOR 3 MINUTES 31 SECONDS. gIcZHUnAKgg
November 26, 201212 yr Author I GOT A GIRL- LOU BEGA http://www.12inch.de/l/30400.jpg PEAK POSITION: 55 SALES: 10K FOLLOW UP TO: MAMBO NO 5 Oh crazy Lou Bega, he got a girl in every country, presumably they know about each other now, perhaps he’s still seeing them all, I’ve seen “cheaters” and “Jeremy Kyle USA” I know it goes on. A song without a redeeming feature and which rightly bombed in the run up to the millennium, let us never speak of it again. MORAL OF THE STORY: BRAGGING ABOUT BEING A HO WON’T BE SUCCESSFUL UNTIL THE NOUGHTIES Agr3zDTVVMk
November 26, 201212 yr Author SOON BE DONE- SHAGGY http://chartarchive.org/artwork/13306-300.jpg PEAK POSITION: 46 SALES: 10K FOLLOW UP TO: OH CAROLINA Certainly the success of “Oh Carolina” came as a surprise to all chart watchers, Reggae as a genre makes only an occasional appearance in the chart and usually in force (1993 is one such example, as is 2003 oddly) with Shaggy as one of the figures in the 93 movement. Indeed his tenure at the top is a notable one for the only instance where the entire top 3 were by reggae influenced tracks (Snow, and Shabba Ranks being the other ones). We all thought Shaggy would never be seen again after this flopped but he’s proved us wrong on two occasions! MORAL OF THE STORY: NEVER WRITE OFF AN AMERICAN MARINE SINGING REGGAE 5MlvuV6UtiU
November 26, 201212 yr That Snow track is a classic! Still sounds good nearly 20 years on. Back to the three flops, I remember the Lou Bega track. Its just "Mambo No5" with different lyrics. Tacky song. Do have a vague re-collection of the Christmas chart that year where they focused on acts who had big summer hit that failed to make Top 40! Lou, Enrique Igelsias (Rhythm Divine) and Thunderbugs (Its About Time You Were Mine). Shaggy is an odd case...big hits, flop, big hits. Knows his steps and is successfull. Wamdue Project...can see why this flopped but "King of My Castle" was no better either. Was that singer a transsexual and/or a porno star?
November 26, 201212 yr I actually really like Mea Culpa by Enigma!!! They're probably my biggest guilty pleasure act, I think I've got about five, yes FIVE(!), of their albums.
November 26, 201212 yr King of My Castle is amazing, the follow-up single not so much I Got a Girl was a big hit here, shame on us :P
