Because one example of course disproves the whole thing.

There seems to be a new random charity song showing up in the top 40 every couple of days this month :drama: Is this a cover of the Lily Allen song or a different 'Smile'?

 62. Lightning Bolt - Jake Bugg

This song is really not very good at all, I really like 'Two Fingers' and quite like 'Taste It' but I could see this annoyingly being his biggest hit.

 64. Lost - Frank Ocean

 66. Oats In the Water - Ben Howard

'Lost' is brilliant, best thing I've heard from Frank so far I think (I need to give his album a listen). Really hope it can go top 40. Ben just getting another top 75 hit would be great.

Something New is awful though.

If Lights, Want U Back and Rumour Has It got that radio airplay, they would've been MASIVE hits (250,000+ sales) for certain.

We see it all the time. If Thrift Shop gets no radio airplay, it will be a long-running #150 hit or something. Mark my words, when Radio 1 playlists it next month, it's going to shoot right up the charts.

Or look at Titanium. Without much radio airplay, that would've been a #16 hit that dropped out the top 75 in 3 weeks. But with good radio support and a music video, it's a million-seller.

Its been floating around for ages in the top 200 - it must be at least his 2nd biggest single behind Two Fingers anyway.

Would be interesting to know how many sales LB has actually had

But it's the most recent example (is more as to what I was getting at + the fact I have a terrible memory so I can never think of any others - whether it was for or against my argument ha). We should all know by now that radio airplay does not guarantee a smash though. It helps, obviously, there is no denying that. But saying that any song can be a big if airplay is on their side, isn't true at all. (For the UK anyway, US charts are influenced by airplay, so I can see the point there)

Hush you!

'Rumour Has It' had airplay though and tbf, shouldn't be counted as it was the 4th single from a multi-million selling album  That's why it "flopped" (although I'd still say it was a hit personally). Also 'Lights' and 'Want U Back' were ready available on the albums, so they were never gonna do too much. (Was 'Lights' on the main version of the album? Or was it the lead for the re-release? If it was the latter, ignore my point :P) Had 'Want U Back' and 'Lights' been released before their respective albums, then I'm sure they would have been the hits they should have been.

Also, 'Titanium' had an advert on the iTunes front page as it was used as a "buzz single". As soon as the advert was removed it was just living on word of mouth so it would definitely have only been a #16 hit. Also, IIRC 'Titanium' actually got momentum before being officially playlisted (except by probably Capital? - They playlisted it twice didn't they?) and was already rising on iTunes just as it was announced it was the new single. No denying airplay helps (it's helped 'Beneath Your Beautiful' remain in the top 10 for as long as it has.) but it's not necessarily guaranteed to be a hit either...

I think he means any GOOD song that gets radio airplay will become a smash :P

(Bias aside 'Something New' clearly doesn't appeal far beyond the GA stanbase if it's done as poorly as it has with so much exposure).

'Lights' was the iTunes bonus track on the original version of Ellie's album BTW. It makes sense that it wasn't a very big hit considering the circumstances but seems bizarre that a song by a BRITISH artist that's top 5 on the US year end chart only barely scraped the top 50 here.

It's subjective though, isn't it? What's good or bad? It's all opinion based. One mans rubbish, is another mans treasure etc.. :P

But it was the lead single in the US, no? I'm sure if they'd push 'Starry Eyed' like they did 'Lights' and released 'Lights' after, then it would be a completely different story.

But either way, YAY for British artists storming the American charts this year!

Of course it's subjective. It just appears that the majority of people subjectively don't like it enough to buy it :P With songs like 'Want U Back' there's clearly some evidence that it could have been a huge hit with more exposure, as it was a huge hit in the USA and the UK's taste is mostly in line with the US', country and hip-hop aside.
But I think it's important also, as to who is behind the song too. Cher Lloyd has a fan base, evidently, but I'm pretty sure more people hate her than like her and will be put off from buying it as opposed to, if it was Ke$ha or Avril Lavigne's single or whatever. It WOULD have been a bigger hit, but I don't think it would have done much more. Top 20? It was a post album single and all her fans already had the album and were only buying the Astro remix. (I wish she'd not bothered with that. The original is far better) she doesn't have wide enough appeal at the moment to sell beyond her fanbase. So songs before the album are always gonna be top 10 (they're loyal enough), but as soon as the album is released, she won't sell much more. (This could change with album 2 though - now people sort of know what to expect and stuff.)

The Astro remix sold about fuck all, peaked at about #100 on iTunes didn't it? :P That is a good point about it being a post-album single I suppose but even so I think in retrospect it could have gone top 10 with more exposure, or maybe a better tagged-on rapper

Incidentally, when is she planning to release 'Oath' here? It feels like it's been out for months everywhere else in the world now. Hate when British artists treat their own country so badly after getting a taste of international success (and it never seems to work out for them). On this note I at least respect One Direction for holding 'Live While We're Young' back a couple of weeks in the USA like in the UK :P

TF 52.5k

I have 37k logged for LB, but am missing 13 weeks sales as it keeps popping in/out of the T200, so it's probably over 50k overall.

PS, don't you think your sig is a bit too long?

Haha, you're the third person in two days to tell me this. I'll cut it down after Christmas.

As for Jake Bugg, Lightning Bolt really is dreadful. His other material isn't great either, it's a shame because I believe that he has a lot of potential. :(

425. Rita Ora - Radioactive

The video has just been on TV, so it should start climbing some more. First time I've heard the song, and I instantly love it! Yeah, it's generic, but it's awesome!

Want U Back wasn't playlisted by either Capital or Radio 1, so I think it would've been a lot bigger. It's success in the US (where is actually WAS playlisted by the big radio stations there) proves that.

I never said high airplay guarantees a song to be massive. There's lots of examples where it doesn't happen (e.g. You Da One by Rihanna, Morning Sun by Robbie Williams, etc.), but Want U Back and Lights obviously would've been massive if they got better airplay. And most other songs that are big hits would've flopped without the radio airplay they had. Niggas In Paris for example wouldn't have touched the top 75 without Radio 1 playlisting it, for example (it was already huge in the clubs for months before, and it did next to nothing for it, its chart success it almost solely based on Radio 1, Hackney Weekend and its music video).
