I'm not talking OAOS here, but of ones that might have been bigger hits if released in a later (or earlier) era than they actually were.

To start the ball rolling, I will cite Jean-Michel Jarre 'Oxygene Pt4'.

If you'd never heard it before, how many people would guess that it is 35 years old?

If it had been released at the peak of the dance/trance phase of the 00's, it would surely have been a #1 (rather than #4 in 1977)

aphex twin - windowlicker.

it's amazing it even got #16, because it sounds like it's honestly a #01 hit from the FAR future tbh

Probably missing the point here, but if Nelly Furtado's Big Hoops (Bigger the Better) was released earlier it could have been bigger the better. Six years after your last hit is too long, many would have forgotten/didn't know she was now.

Same goes to any other song released years after being really successful.

I totally disagree with you. I think that song in 1977 sounded of its time when it was released. It was quite innovative of Jean Michel Jarre. I can't see it released in the 2000s. And #4 is not bad as most people who are interested in music know that song anyway.

Rachel Steven's whole Come and Get It album would have been massive in 2008/2009. One of my favourite albums of the 00's as well. Lisa-Scott Lee's material also might have stood a better chance than as well, particularly Too Far Gone and Lately

Doesn't really matter because it was sucessfull but I can totally see Call Me Maybe fitting in around 1999/2000. Same with What Makes You Beautiful

I don't know when it should have been released (probably in like 10 years or something), but Kanye West's entire My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album was way ahead of its time. It has helped to develop the current wave of Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd etc in a way. The UK just didn't get it at the time, but i think most would agree that it is now nothing short of a perfect album.
I've always felt Unklejam's What Am I Fighting For? was a couple of years ahead of it's time. I'm confident it would have easily beaten its #16 peak had it been released in the electropop boom in 2009!

True. Didn't All of the Lights go Top 20 though? That deserved number one

Awesome choice, definately agree. ^_^

Definitely. Love that song, still listen to it.

+1

The lead singer released a great solo album earlier this year as Tyson by the way.

Someone mentioned this one on the forum ages back:

Fits into today's music easily and if released now would be an obvious top 10 hit. Unfortunately it was released in 2007 and bombed at #36.

And this one annoys me to this day as it's utterly amazing but came out too late:

Storming trance remix of a song from 'Gladiator' - a film released in 2000 and the sound of the remix perfectly fitting in with the trance hits of that year too. So when was it released? 2000?

No, Summer 2004. <_< A minor #19 peak was all this got, by which time trance had long stopped being the commercial force it once was. It's the equivalent today of someone this year releasing a bassline garage remix of a song from 'The Dark Knight'...too late!!

I agree about this song - in fact it was the last 12" single I bought!

A current example, but I think Die Young would've been even bigger in around 2010 than it has been. Also Scream & Shout would've been bigger in 2008/2009 than now aswell.

Basically you could just list all dance-pop songs, and say they'd be bigger in 2008, and all indie-pop songs and say they'd be bigger in 2006.

I think Don't Play Nice by Verbalicious would've been bigger in 2009 than it was in 2005 when it was released. I used to hear it on the radio a lot.

I wish UKG would come back tbh. I know it's been kind of replaced by dubstep (which is almost the same thing anyway), but I really miss the songs being on the radio. However, it was popular around 1999-2001, then disappeared, then came back a bit in 2007-2008, so we might get another UK garage hit again one day.

Britney 'Radar' it should've been released during the Blackout era not the Circus one... By the time it was released it sounded outdated....

Yeah, I agree. Radar doesn't really fit in with the rest of the sound of Circus either, seems to fit in with Blackout more.

That would be because it's from 'Blackout'.
