They increased from 218 in 2011 to 604 last year...408 of which because of Feeder releasing a special edition of one of their singles on the format and a few hundred die-hard fans presumably buying it from their online store for the novelty.

So without that Feeder song (which missed the top 40 anyway) they actually went down a bit to 196 :P

Do stores actually sell new cassettes? :)

There are no new cassettes for them to sell. 'Borders' was a very unusual release. :P

I remember reading the last number 1 hit to register cassette sales was Elton John's 'Are You Ready For Love' in late 2003, and by mid-2004 none from any artists were being reported as shipped. 'Now That's What I Call Music' stopped making cassette albums in 2006.

And that the biggest cassette seller of 2009, 2010 and 2011 (but not 2012!) was, of all things, N'Sync's 'I'll Never Stop' from the turn of the millennium. It sells like 20-30 copies a year, I'm convinced that somewhere in the UK there's a music shop that has hundreds of that one song on sale!

I have not seen a cassette single or album in any store iv been in for years! There must be some random independent store out there somewhere though that is doing a roaring trade in N'Sync and Charles Aznavour cassettes though

Found the MW article from last January that highlights Feeder's and N'Sync cassette sales - N'Sync smashing it with 48 cassettes sold in 3 years although im surprised there would be that many people actually wanting an N'Sync cassette

Also the article below states that Feeder sold 467 copies of 'Boarders' on cassette in week 1 so with the up to date article stating total sales of 480 it means they only sold 13 copies during the rest of the year although im guessing probably only 500 or so were printed in the first place.

Welsh rockers Feeder fell short of the Top 75 with their last five singles but an unusual (for 2012) four format release strategy brings them career hit number 25, as Borders debuts at number 52 (4,663 sales). The introductory single from the band's eighth studio album Generation Freakshow, which is released next month, Borders sold 2,978 copies digitally last week, plus 644 on CD, 574 on 7-inch and 467 on...cassette. It is the first Top 75 hit to include sales from a cassette since Elton John's Are You Ready For Love topped the chart in 2003.

As the biggest-selling cassette single of 2011 - 'N Sync's I'll Never Stop - sold only 11 copies all year, it will come as no surprise that Borders was the nation's number one cassette last week. It was also the number one 7-inch and the number two CD (behind Wherever You Are by The Military Wives) but not among the Top 75 downloads. Incidentally, it is something of a mystery why I'll Never Stop was the biggest selling cassette not only in 2011 but also in 2010 (13 sales) and 2009 (24 sales) - it was only a number 11 hit when released in 2000. Admittedly its cassette sales are very modest but is it possible that there's just one retailer who, for some reason, had a large number of copies of the release, and is selling the occasional copy from his bargain bin?

Even at the height of their fame? :P

I think we're all failing to mention how *amazing* the Official Charts Company Twitter account is! *.*

‏@officialcharts Sales of cassette singles, yes CASSETTE SINGLES, tripled in 2012 to ermm 604 units. Guess what the biggest seller was?

@officialcharts Two of you have guessed Mr Blobby. WRONG! Guess again.

@officialcharts Clue 2. 2012's biggest selling cassette single WASN'T Rik Waller, Michelle McManus, Fast Food Rockers, or Thomas The Tank audio book.

@officialcharts Neither was it Lisa Scott-Lee's - TOO FAR GONE

@officialcharts Sorry to disappoint hopeful Rachel Stevens fans but #OfficialChartFact: Biggest selling cassette single of 2012 was Border by @FeederHQ

Juran Juran ' :D ' at the fact 'Borders' is still being discussed almost a year into its release!

Presumably they increased from 1 to 3...

I was almost sure that now nobody released singles on cassetes.
