Slightly demoted due to not really being a discovery (it was Top 20 on my Year-End list for 2012 even!), but the sheer quality of the vocal-mixed Surph shines through to keep it in the top 10 <3

 

9 // Tinnmark > Ghost Beach - Close Enough (feat. Noosa)

 

 

next up is Tinnmark's big hitter from this year, an 80's influenced synth-pop track with a BLASTING chorus. MORE LIKE THIS NEXT YEAR TINNMARK

 

 

8 // Syndare > Belanger - Take Me Home

 

 

Syndare's shining moment came with the energetic, Steve Nicks-sampling 'Take Me Home' (and potentially my biggest competition in TBO? or maybe i'm just completely overestimating my own chances ooops). Didn't quite get my 12 back in August, but since then it's really come into its own as one of BJSC's 'defining' songs of 2013

one of N DNTN's runner-ups this year (there may still be another to come later on~), an industrial-tinged techno banger- along with a second FAB music vid from Gesaffelstein this year, following 'Pursuit'. Must give the album a listen!

6 // Fljótavík > Ludovico Einaudi - Experience (Starkey Edit)

 

 

Possibly one of the more original tracks entered this year- a dubstep shake up of Einaudi's "Experience", with surprisingly amazing results, notched Fljótavík's second consecutive top 5 finish (and the other of those is still to come!)

5 // Fljótavík > VAULTS - Cry No More

 

 

and here's the other Fljótavík hit~ it scraped to victory back in August, and thankfully so- amazing and epic instrumentation with an impressive vocal performance to boot!

 

 

4 // Utopia > Bibio - Á tout á l'heure

 

 

a second Utopia appearance in my top 20, and one that fared alot better in BJSC- this blissful summer anthem surprised me by finishing close to the top 10!

3 // N DNTN > Autre Ne Veut - Counting

 

 

N DNTN made a huge first impression on me this year- a slightly off-kilter mix of electro/R&B, paired with Ashin's vulnerable falsetto- wonderful stuff!

 

 

for some reason i was not expecting that!! woooo.

2 // Skall > Postiljonen - Supreme

 

 

at #2 is the uplifting dream-pop anthem that..well, lifted Skall to a well-deserved victory back in May. The song evidently takes a leaf or two from M83's book, but does it really matter when it's THIS good?

 

 

 

1 // Mdice > Sophie - Bipp

 

 

yep. a song i wasn't completely sure what to think of when i first heard it (i certainly didn't think there was an entry that STOOD OUT as much as this tho!), but its pure catchiness + quirkiness won me over quickly. with the chirpy vocals and sugar-sweet hooks, it feels like one of those songs you'd expect to get a bit grating after a while- but in this case Bipp never seems to get old <3 Congrats to Mdice for my favourite BJSC discovery of 2013!

Great #1, I'm ashamed that BIPP came 11th for me at the time but is one of my favourite discoveries of the year.
