Radio 1 playlisted Do You... at least a while ago lol.

It seems like sometimes an artist has a big hit and then Radio 1 see that and decide to playlist the follow-up (which usually people don't like as much), but sometimes I think it'd be better if the played the big hit, even if it's really old by the time Radio 1 realize they should've been playing the song.

See radioactive by imagine dragons :)

I just find long running #1 hits really special purely because they happen so rarely. Interesting thought...

In 2013, Daft Punk have 4 weeks at #1, drop down to #2 then return to #1 for their fifth and final week.

In 2012, Gotye feat. Kimbra had 4 weeks at #1, dropped down to #3 then returned to #1 for their fifth and final week.

In 2011, Adele had 4 weeks at #1, dropped down to #2 then return to #1 for her fifth and final week.

So yes, I'd like a 6 week run at #1 as it's not happened since 'We Found Love' although even that wasn't consecutive. :P

I think this phenomena is more common now because of the mix if release strategies nowadays genuine massive hits explode with a little promo and hit no1 then as their sales level out and slowly fall a held back release can nip in with a weeks buy sales and grab no1 then they fall down quicker and the songs released first maintain sales over a longer period!!

I'd like to think that we've moved beyond the point of blowing each other up just because of how we say that name of that county (I say Derry because a) It sounds better, and b) because of my cultural upbringing).

The biggest scandal about the Radio 1 Big Weekend is the fact that not one single artist playing at the festival is from Derry, and only one is from Northern Ireland (a jam jar to the person who guesses who it is without looking). It's not as if Derry is devoid of talent - in the past year several artists from there have been playlisted on Radio 1, like Wonder Villains, SOAK & Little Bear. Given that the whole point of holding the Big Weekend in Derry is to tie in with being the UK City of Culture for 2013, it is a glaring oversight.

Most Protestant/Unionist people in N.I call it Derry it's the more extreme loyalists who make a point of saying LondonDerry usually making a political point. Like a person working in the bus station in Belfast a few years back who was asked by a Canadian tourist what time the bus to Derry was in reply the employee told her "there's no such place"!

Thankfully he got sacked :)

Get Lucky is getting used on BBC1 as a theme tune :D to the Radio 1 roadshow starting next week from Friday

What The F**K! :o

Figured it'd go top 10 (on iTunes at least), they seem to have a big fanbase for some inexplicable reason

Oh dear at The Janoskains going in at #11, hopefully it manages to avoid the top 40 this week, although they will have two days sales. They usually drop before the day ends, so hopefully the weekend effect allows it to be around #20-30 tomorrow.
Olly Murs is really flying up the chart, looks like it is gona do very well for him, i also hope the album starts to climb too.
You may as well create a random playlist of 40 songs that Capital play instead of listening to the Big Top 40.

Not really - the Top 10 is the iTunes Chart at that point and 11-40 are sorely airplay from throughout the week (if I'm correct?). Plus most of the music that's played on Capitial is decent. :P

Clearly someone knows who they are then - I certainly don't!

I've never heard of them either

Yes at Olly Murs climbing so high. It's a much better song than Army of Two so thoroughly deserved. Also pleased to see Where is the love and Use Somebody both sticking in the top 40 :)
Come onnn Margaret and Cascada! Loreen too of course! Looks like a few of these could go too 75 next week, Emmelie for certain. Obviously nothing this year will be as big as Euphoria was though.

The #11-#40 section is iTunes downloads combined with airplay from the Big Top 40 stations (Heart, Capital, etc.) for the entire week. I honestly think the reason they include airplay is because often there's a lot of risky, creative songs that Capital, etc. refuse to play that are sometimes in the #11-#40 section, but including the airplay basically makes that section all MOR pop and adult contemporary songs, and pushes the non-radio friendly stuff out.

The good thing about the Big Top 40 Show imo is that they play 50 songs in 3 hours, and there's not much talking during it. Radio 1 they used to sometimes have 10 minutes talking between songs, although they improved on that recently and play the whole top 40 now too.

HAHA thats exactly why they do it, so its entirely based on their rythmic pop playlis. God forbid they would have to play a new entry by a band that has gigged for years, sat down written a original song and performed instruments or even an artist who is more than 20 years old - or worse scenario - BOTH!!

Good old commercial radio - capitalism was mean to bring competition, uniqueness and variety but it manages to turn into a monopoly of musical types on british commercial stations!!

Loreen is mentioned in this thread far too often, think she needs her own iTunes watch thread -_- This thread might only be 10 pages long then though. I said it.
