HA no way is she better than Amy!

She hasn't even had a stable personality, they've just transplanted her with this thick, gobby girl now that she has no interesting mystery.

...which was more or less what happened to Amy following the conclusion of River's mystery in series 6.

Is it weird that I actually prefer RTD to Stephen Moffat? :D I just found the plots much more interesting in general with his whilst Moffat kinda makes too many arches that make everything so confusing. Series 6 was done great. Series 7 felt a bit meh but still better than series 3, however I just can't watch them without getting bored at the moment.

It's definitely not weird, I MUCH prefer RTD. Moffat's a fab writer but overcomplicates things for me. RTD's era is what I go back to most

I love that they are concentrating on expanding Clara as a character in this series. Four episodes in and I already feel like I know her a lot better than I did previously. It feels more of a double act than Matt Smith and his "mystery girl." I'm also loving the relationship between Clara and the new grouchy Doctor.

Intrigued to find out more about Clara's and Danny's futures.

9/10

Indeed. In the last series I just didn't care about Clara whereas in this series I do. The lack of sexual chemistry between them is really working.

Clever storytelling =/= overcomplicating. RTD stuck to the same basic formula each and every series and it got tiring after the first couple. Opening episode has to be some slapstick humour comedy, finale has to be an invasion where the enemy wants to take over the world (3/4 of those being with Daleks, such originality), and what have you.

Moffat's bold enough to dare take the show in a completely different direction, and it can't be that much of a maths problem for many people considering it's only been growing in popularity since RTD's era came to an end.

It's not too hard to be better than Amy. I liked her but I was never a fan. Clara has been growing on me a lot this series, she's so much better with Capaldi (or maybe it's just the better stories this time).

I much prefer RTD thanks to the first series of PERFECTION, however his formula, like said above, of Man Doctor saves Weak Woman got old, fast.

I like Moffat's complicated theories, I love having to think, which is what's missing from this shit series so far, for example the splintered woman, the doctor's death, the doctor's death again, the Time Girl, and my FAVE ever Doc Who moment, outside the end battle and Bad Wolf, Amy's goo thingy twist.

Moffat over RTD anyday, for me. Although RTD was brillaint at first he did become repetitive and over the top in his tenure. Moffat brought back the more intriguing aspects of The Doctor. And personally I prefer to have to think about what's going on rather than be spoon fed the answers all the time.

As for Clara, I was not a fan last year and whilst I wouldn't say I am now, she has improved massively this year. She now seems like a real person rather than a plot device. I'll admit that whilst the plots haven't been the best this year (Listen excepted) the show has a stronger emphasis on character now. It remains to be seen what the overall arc for the series is but I approve of the slowing of the pace. The biggest complaint I had with 10 and 11 is the propensity for the stories to focus on The Doctor as being madcap fun.

I like my Doctors to be a bit mysterious and edgy. Capaldi does a portrayal of brooding and dark that we haven't really seen since Eccleston and even McCoy.

Just went through the 4th series over the weekend and I forgot how good it is  Definitley up there in the top series of Dcotor Who

Well, I haven't yet commented on any of the new episodes, but here we go. Calum, you might want to stop reading now, there's a danger you might implode/explode.

I had SUCH high hopes for this series and it's been a monumental let down so far. I really thought having a new doctor, and an actor with such presence, would make it easy for them to overcome at least SOME of the issues the show had, but no. Capaldi IS excellent, the first episode was a very awkward transition, but that was partly down to a pretty terrible script/concept for the bulk of the episode. Only in the last 20 minutes or so did it actually get good.

Clara IS also excellent too, and finally has a sense of purpose and agency about her. I like that they've made it feel fairly natural building her character, life, relationships up outside the Doctor and seeing that clash with what he wants to do. All without it being a jealous ''lover'' type scenario, which aside from being super creepy with this doctor, would also be stupidly repetitive.

Anyway, onto the issues, again. TERRIBLE SCRIPTS. It's like they have an amazing idea, they flesh out a great beginning and ending and then just THROW WORDS AT THE PAGE for the interim 40 minutes. Every single episode has had a huge case of mid episode sag, they haven't once kept my interest across the whole run time. Rewatching some RTD yesterday (Utopia, Doomsday, The Stolen Earth/Journey's End) and it's astonishing to think of it as the same show.

This isn't even so much an issue with Moffat, although I do, ultimately, hold him responsible as head writer/showrunner. The more cerebral ideas and multi-series arcs he introduced were fine, because they felt like they had mapped out an idea. Most episodes were decently self contained and whilst they might have lacked the formula, they still had a strong story (for the most part). Series 7 was the beginning of this horrible black spot the show finds itself in now. I've mentioned it A LOT in this thread, but I will do so again, the show just feels like it is bookended with 2 big episodes and the rest can just be thrown together with virtually no thought.

Granted episode 4 was fairly strong, BUT it all felt disjointed to me. It didn't feel like the doctor was on the trail of something, it just felt like he was wandering through time because he had got a little drunk and confused. Episode 3 was a good, fun, romp, which we've lacked for a while and is actually my favourite of the 4. Episode 2 had such a brilliant, brilliant idea, and definitely worked in terms of bringing the new doctor's personality forward, but the whole thing just felt incomplete.

Basically, here is how I rate the 3 episodes:

06 Deep Breath

07 Into The Dalek

09 Robin Of Sherwood

07 Listen

Series 4 is my favourite, not a single dud episode in the whole run

DING DING DING

we have a winner

You'll be the one exploding

Thanks, John, I'm glad someone else has recognised the episode sag. I've not really felt this in the past two episodes though.

Same here! It never gets old  Silence in the Library is a masterpiece imo

^^^ This. Although it's getting better now that it's fully in gear

Loved this one. So far Series 8 is more good than dud.
One of the best episodes of the series, I loved it, it had that scarce factor to it which came across as a strong episode.

Really great episode, had far more what I love about the show than last week for me - a really good mix of scares, plot twists, action and mystery that keeps you guessing. Really loved the monster too. The scenes where it was chasing them were amazing.

I'm really enjoying the diversity this season, bar the slight faux pas of similar robot villains in episodes 1 and 3, I don't think you can really say any of the episodes have been just like each other so far. All exploring very different grounds.

Next week's looking like another enigmatic showstopper.
