Top 40 Singles

Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines, featuring TI and Pharrell Williams, which last week became the fastest-selling single of the year, looks set for a second week on top of the Official Singles Chart.

According to today’s Official Chart Update, Blurred Lines shows no signs of retreat and is outselling its closest competitor Naughty Boy FT Sam Smith’s La La La, by nearly two to one, it has sold a staggering 260,000 copies to date.

Upon reaching Number 1 last weekend, Thicke told OfficialCharts.com:

“It is an honour and a pleasure to be Number 1 in the UK. It’s something I’ve always dreamed of, and I am so grateful to all the people who made this dream come true. Thank you!”

Carry On, the debut single from X Factor boy band Union J is currently at Number 3, closely followed by Daft Punk & Pharell’s inescapable Get Lucky at Number 4. Fuse ODG, with a little help from Wyclef Jean, looks set to enter the Official Singles Chart Top 5 with Antenna (4), though it faces tough competition from Passenger who is heading for his sixth consecutive week in the Top 10 with Let Her Go.

Afrojack and Chris Brown are at Number 17 in this week’s Official Chart Update with As Your Friend, while Love Like This, the new single from Irish rockers Kodaline is at Number 19.

Goo Goo Dolls look set to re-enter the Official Singles Chart Top 40 with their 1998 hit Iris, following the song’s appearance on The Voice last weekend. Iris rockets up 45 places to Number 27 this week.

Top 40 Albums

Josh Homme's QOTSA and the Disclosure brothers go head-to-head in nail-biting race for Number 1.

The gloves are off!

It’s USA vs UK / Californa vs Surrey / veterans vs rookies / rock vs electronica / man vs machine as Palm Desert’s Queens Of The Stone Age go head-to-head with Reigate duo Disclosure in the race for Number 1 on the Official Album Chart.

…Like Clockwork, the sixth album from US rock veterans QOTSA snatches a nail-biting lead on Disclosure’s debut album Settle of only a few thousand copies in today’s Official Chart Update, but the gap is steadily narrowing with all still to play for.

Josh Homme’s band of merry men have yet to secure a UK Number 1 album. 2002’s Songs For The Deaf and 2005’s Lullabies To Paralyze both peaked at Number 4.

Meanwhile, Disclosure brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence, who have boasted a string of hit singles in recent months, spearheaded by the Number 2-peaking White Noise FT AlunaGeorge, should by no means rule themselves out of a debut chart topper this weekend. With Disclosure currently enjoying no less than three tracks riding in today’s Top 50 over on the Official Singles Chart Update, the UK public are clearly keen - could an albums upset be on the cards come Sunday’s final whistle?

Daft Punk look set to lose their two-week hold on Number 1 as Random Access Memories falls down two to Number 3, while Rod Stewart’s Time slips to Number 4.

Miles Kane is on course for his highest charting solo album to date, as the former Rascals and Last Shadow Puppets singer’s second release Don’t Forget Who You Are is at Number 5 in this week’s Official Chart Update.

Rock super veterans Megadeth are on course for their highest charting album in almost a decade as their fourteenth studio album Supercollider is at Number 14 midweek. At Number 20 is Mutation’s Error 500, followed by City & Colour at Number 21 with The Hurry And The Harm.

This week’s new entries are rounded off by Sleeping With Sirens’ third album Feel at Number 28 and Camera Obscura’s Desire Lines (30).

If so, you've flopped big time.

Whoops.

You've missed out The Script - The Man Who Can't Be Moved at #40.

Oh, at Stooshe only dropping to #18 quite impressive, I expected a drop to around #30.

Midweek Charts: Queens of Stone Age lift Matador to new chart heights

Source: MW

by Paul Willams

Beggars-affiliated indie label Matador is heading for its highest-charting album yet in the UK as Queens Of The Stone Age challenge to reach No 1.

Until now the label, which started in New York City in 1989 and has been co-owned by Beggars since 2002, has only risen as high as No 21 on the UK artist albums chart, achieved by Interpol's Antics in 2004. However, that will be soundly beaten this weekend with QOTSA's brand new album Like Clockwork currently leading midweek sales, according to the Official Charts Company.

The Californian group's first studio album on Matador and sixth in all, it follows three previous releases on Universal's Interscope Records. The last, Era Vulgaris, reached No 7 in 2007, while their highest peak of 4 was realised by both 2002's Songs For The Deaf and Lullabies To Paralyse three years later.

Just behind Like Clockwork at this stage of the week are UK electronic duro Disclosure whose debut PMR/Island album Settle appears as a new entry as 2 in the midweeks. It features their hit singles Latch, White Noise and You & Me.

Columbia act Miles Kane's second solo album Don't Forget Who You Are could become his first Top 10 entry, registering at 5 in the latest Sales Flashes. Solo debut Colour Of The Trap reached No 11 in 2011.

With sales down 50% on the week, Daft Punk's Columbia set Random Access Memories drops to 3 having secured a second week at No 1 last weekend. Rod Stewart's Capitol/Decca album looks like spending a fourth week in the top five as it eases 2-4, while Nettwerk-signed Passenger drops 4-6 with All The Little Lights, Rudimental's Asylum/Atlantic debut Home falls 5-7, Virgin act Bastille are down 6-8 with Bad Blood and Ellie Goulding slips 9-10 with her Polydor album Halcyon. Meanwhile, Olly Murs looks to move back into the Top 10 with his third Epic album Right Place Right Time up 13-9 as sales increase 52% on the week following a performance on ITV1's Britain's Got Talent.

Arriving in the Top 20 is Mutation, the latest musical project of UK guitarist, singer and songwriter Ginger Wildheart, formerly of The Quireboys and The Willdhearts. His first Mutation album was subject to bids on the direct-to-fan site Pledge Music and managed to raise the sums it needed so it could come out within 90 minutes. Follow-up Error 500 on the Round label is new at 20 in the latest midweeks.

Other acts set to debut in and around the Top 40 this Sunday include Universal's veteran US metal band Megadeth, City & Colour - the current musical outlet for Canadian singer-songwriter Dallas Green via Cooking Vinyl, Rise Records' Sleeping With Sirens, 4AD's Camera Obscura and Madness's Lee Thompson and his Ska Orchestra through the Axe Attack label.

After racing to the highest weekly sales of the year last week, the Interscope/Polydor single Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke featuring TI and Pharrell Williams looks set to remain at No1 for another week on the singles chart after taking an early lead on Sales Flashes. Remaining behind it is Naughty Boy's former Virgin-issued chart-topper La La La with Sam Smith, while 2012 X Factor finalists Union J's first RCA single Carry You is new at 3. Daft Punk's Columbia release Get Lucky with Pharrell Williams drops 3-4 and the 3 Beat/AATW single Antenna by Fuse ODG is new at 5.

The rest of the singles Top 10 as it currently stands is heading downwards with Passenger's Nettwerk single Let Her Go dropping 4-6, Epic act Olly Murs' Dear Darlin' down 6-7, although with sales rising 4% on the week, Lava/Republic/Island's Jessie J slipping 5-8 with Wild featuring Big Sean and Dizzee Racal, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Ray Dalton's Can't Hold Us on the Macklemore label down 7-9 and Asylum/Atlantic signings Rudimental's Waiting All Night featuring Ella Eyre declining 8-10.

Afrojack's new single As Your Friend featuring Chris Brown on the PM AM Recordings label via Island is new at 17 in the week to date, while B-Unique/RCA's Kodaline look like they are heading for another Top 20 hit with Love Like This showing up at 19.

The Goo Goo Dolls' 1998 single Iris is subject to yet another revival with the Warner Bros cut leaping 72-27 after it was covered by BBC One show The Voice contestant Abi Sampa. It previously returned to the Top 20 in May after hopeful Robbie Kennedy performed it on ITV1's Britain's Got Talent. The Voice is also behind revivals this week of 14th Floor/Atlantic act Birdy's Skinny Love and Capitol-signed Lady Antebellum's Need You Now.

Robin Thicke and Naughty Boy on ~70k and ~35k respectively then - Robin Thicke could do close to another 150k this week then maybe? Naughty Boy should at least clear 70k again. Daft Punk could have a bit of a dip this week but should still be well above 50k at least.

Pleased to see Kodaline top 20. Not a massive amount going on this week. Disclosure only 'a few thousand' behind QOTSA is quite encouraging but that could still mean anything. EWW at City And Colour being that high, my sister has subjected me to his music before and it's so so depressing and awful.

Down 10 is nowhere near as bad as I expected for Stooshe, I was thinking like #29 at the highest this week. They'll be out of the top 20 by Sunday but still.
Yet another fantastic bumper week of sales in the singles chart, it is great to see. I agree about Stooshe, i expected much lower in the update i thought #25 would be their highest today, it looks likely they will now manage 2 weeks top 25 and possibly 3 in the top 40 which isnt bad for an album many thought would never see the light of day.

Robin Thicke on ~70k, he should be set for another ~155k? Maybe a bit more if the beats advert is shown again this saturday during BGT.

Great to see Fuse ODG in the top 5, I was a bit worried for him after Soundbwoy flopped but clearly people like Antenna more, maybe people preferring it is why Soundbwoy only went top 20. Union J not challenging for #1 is also great to see, hopefully Daft Punk overtake them by the end of the week.

Afrojack finally getting his first top 20 is amazing news (excluding Give Me Everything because he was only featured on it). What a shame he needed the help of Chris Brown to do so but congratulations anyway. I haven't heard the new Kodaline single but I bet it is as dull as the first 2, I've got high hopes that it'll fall out of the top 20 by the end of the week.

Disclosure #2 in albums is amazing to see, I didn't think it would beat Queens as they are the type of act who are likely to shift more albums than a new dance act.

"A few thousand" is a bit vague but I'm thinking that sales aren't huge so it'll be QOTSA or Rod (or maybe Daft Punk if they're closer to #2 than #4).

I see what you did there. :teresa:

I predict that Queens Of The Stone Age will sell 56k and Disclosure will sell 42k. I haven't seen the midweek sales though...

Pleased for Kodaline being top 20, though I highly doubt that'll last the week! :(

On another note, Disclosure's album is apparently number 6 in the US iTunes chart, what's brought that on? I didn't think anyone knew about them there!
