Midweek Charts: Sabbath battling Beady Eye for No1

Source: MW

by Paul Willams

Black Sabbath are heading for their highest-charting album in the UK since 1970 with 13 challenging Beady Eye for the No 1 spot.

The Vertigo-issued set, the long-coming follow-up to 1995's Forbidden and the band's first to feature Ozzy Osbourne since Never Say Die in 1978, is currenty around 4,500 sales ahead of Beady Eye's second album Be, according to the Official Chart Company.

The last time Sabbath managed to penetrate the top two positions on the UK abums chart was back in 1970 with their first and only chart-topper Paranoid, while Forbidden in comparsion only rose as high as No 71.

Beady Eye look likely reaching a new albums peak, even if the Columbia-issued Be does not end up at No 1 this Sunday, as it seems destined to debut somewhere in the top two. Their debut and last album Different Gear Still Speeding reached No 3 in 2011.

Completing a top three comprising entirely new entries at this stage of the week is Tomorrow's Harvest, the new album from Warp's Scottish electronic duo Boards Of Canada. It is new at 3 in the latest midweeks, some 18 places better than their current chart peak of 21 achieved with the album Geogaddi in 2002.

KT Tunstall is looking to make it four albums out of four in the Top with ther Virgin-issued Invisible Empire/Crescent Moon presently sowing up as a new entry at 7. Her first two albums Eye To The Telescope and Drastic Fantastic both peaked at 3, while 2011's Tiger Suit made it to No 5.

Sales of Mercury act Taylor Swift's Red leap 331% on the week to send it 25-10 in the midweeks after she performed Everything Has Changed with Ed Sheeran on last Saturday's final of ITV1's Britain's Got Talent. The track itself races 53-5 on the midweek singles chart.

The new entries and rising demand for Swift's album send all of last Sunday's Top 10 heading downwards, some sharply. PMR/Island act Disclosure drop 1-4 with debut album Settle, Rod Stewart's Capitol/Decca set Time is down 4-5, Daft Punk's Columbia album Random Access Me further drops 3-6, Nettwerk's Passenger slips 5-8 with All The Little Lights and Queens Of The Stone Age's Mator debut Like Clockwork drops 2-9.

Status Quo are heading for a chart return with what in Bula Quo is the soundtrack to their first ever feature film. Featuring nine new songs and six re-recordings, the album on their own Fourth Chord label is new at 13 in the midweeks.

Although set to miss out on a Top 10 place, The Art Of Doing Nothing should become Mark Owen's highest-charting solo album yet with the Polydor release showing up at 18 in the midweeks. His current solo peak is 33 with first post Take That offering Green Man in 1996. His last solo effort, How The Mighty Fall, which was released in the year before Take That's 2006 comeback album Beautiful World, failed to chart.

Following BBC Two's broadcast of the documentary the History of the Eagles, the band's Rhino retrospective The Complete Greatest Hits leaps 61-12 in the midweeks with sales increasing nearly seven-fold, while Hotel California re-enters the midweek singles chart.

The RCA-issued Damage, Jimmy Eat World's eighth studio album, is new at 19 in the midweeks, while other new arrivals include a Bruce Springteen retrospective on Columbia on a new Good Goo Dolls album through Warner Bros.

The Robin Thicke featuring TI and Pharrell Williams single will be No 1 for a third week on the singles chart and on course for another 100,000-plus sales tally having already shifted nearly 90,000 further copies this week. The Interscope/Polydor track was boosted by a performance on Graham Norton's BBC One chat show last Friday, giving it a 50,000 unit sales lead over Virgin act Naughty Boy's La La La featuring Sam Smith at No 2. Passenger's Nettwerk single Let Her Go single moves 4-3 ahead of Swift/Sheeran's Everything Has Changed as Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams' Columbia track Get Lucky falls 3-4.

Sales of Olly Murs' Epic cut Dear Darlin' are up 5% on the week, but it slips 5-6, while Jessie J's Lava/Republic-issued single Wild with Big Sean and Dizzee Rascal gains a place to 7. The Voice UK contestant Leah McFall's UMTV-issued cover of I Will Survive jumps 16-8 as Wiley's One More Tune/Warner Bros cut Lights On featuring Angel surges 189-9 and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's Can't Hold Us with Ray Dalton on the Macklemore label is down 9-10.

Also performed on the Britain's Got Talent final, PSY's Republic/Island single Gentleman rises 51-15 with sales up 414%.

Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines has smashed through half a million UK sales in under three weeks as it heads for another week at No 1.

The Interscope/Polydor track featuring TI and Pharrell Williams had sold another 135,883 copies this week up to the end of business on Thursday, taking its cumulative UK tally up to 527,105 units, according to the Official Charts Company. This makes it the fastest-selling single of 2013 and already makes it one of the five biggest-selling track of the year to date.

Immediately below Blurred Lines continues to be Virgin act Naughty Boy featuring Sam Smith's La La La, which holds at 2 in the latest midweeks with Passenger's Nettwerk track Let Her Go climbing 4-3 to swap places with Daft Punk's Columbia-issued Get Lucky with Pharrell Williams. Olly Murs' Epic single Dear Darlin' holds at 5, while Mercury/Virgin EMI act Taylor Swift's Everything Has Changed with Ed Sheeran races 53-6 after it was performed on the final of ITV1's Britain's Got Talent.

Black Sabbath have moved further ahead of Beady Eye in their close battle to top the UK albums chart this weekend, although the Liam Gallagher-fronted band should benefit from a performance on Saturday on BBC One's The Voice. Black Sabbath's Vertigo/Virgin EMI album 13, the band's first with Ozzy Osbourne since 1978, had a 32% sales lead up to the end of Thursday over Beady Eye's Columbia album Be, compared to being 23% in front at the end of the previous day.

Rod Stewart's Capitol/Decca album Time has moved back up 4-3 with sales lifting 11% on the week, while Warp act Boards Of Canada are new at 4 at this stage of the week with Tomorrow's Harvest as PMR/Island's Disclosure drop 1-5 with Settle.

Following the airing of a BBC One documentary, Agnetha Faltskog's Polydor album A races 43-7 in the latest midweeks with sales rising 652% on the week.

NO SALES INFO

Would be interesting to know how Beady eye and Black Sabbath are doing
:o at Boards Of Canada! Was expecting them to be far higher on downloads than the official chart but it seems to be the other way round. How are they doing so well? Very pleased to see it though.

Album midweeks top 5 contains Rod Stewart and Black Sabbath - it's like a chart from 1971...

@scandipop true ... The Eagles not far behind either..

Would Agnethas sales after last night show be in the midweek today? She moved up to #3 on the itunes chart after the show
No Agnetha's sales would probably more reflect in Fridays update than today. Either way she should re-climb which will stop its rather fast decline. Im really doubting Mark Owen will even manage top 40 now as it is looking bleak again for his solo career.

Liam Gallagher’s Beady Eye take on reunited heavy metal legends Black Sabbath in this week’s Number 1 album race.

This week’s Official Albums Chart race is a real battle of the bands, with Beady Eye fighting it out with Black Sabbath in the race to Number 1.

According to Official Charts Company sales data, Black Sabbath are ahead of Liam Gallagher’s boys by a narrow margin of 4,500 copies at this midway stage with their latest studio album, 13.

Not only is 13 the first studio album to be released under the Black Sabbath moniker since Forbidden some 18 years ago, it is also the first Black Sabbath studio album to feature Ozzy Osbourne on vocals since Never Say Die! in 1978. If the heavy metal legends can maintain their lead going into the weekend, 13 will become Sabbath’s first Number 1 UK album since Paranoid in 1970.

Meanwhile, Beady Eye could be on track for a personal best this weekend with their second album BE. BE is currently riding at Number 2, one place higher than the band’s 2011 debut album, Different Gear, Still Speeding, however they would need to leapfrog Black Sabbath before Sunday if they want to draw equal with former Oasis bandmate Noel Gallagher who hit Number 1 with his High Flying Birds project back in October of that year.

Scottish electronic duo Boards Of Canada look set to score their highest charting album to date this weekend. Tomorrow’s Harvest debuts at Number 3 on today’s Official Albums Chart Update. Reigning Official Albums Chart Number 1, Settle by Disclosure, is down three places to Number 4, while Rod Stewart’s Time is at 5.

New Entries

In addition to Black Sabbath’s 13 (1), Beady Eye’s Be (2) and Boards Of Canada’s Tomorrow’s Harvest (3), there are six other new entries on this week’s Official Albums Chart Update.

Scottish singer / songwriter KT Tunstall is heading for her third Top 10 album in a row with Invisible Empire / Crescent Moon, which is new in today at Number 7, while Bula Quo!, Status Quo’s 13th studio album and soundtrack to their very own feature film of the same name, enters at 13.

Take That Star Mark Owen looks set to score his highest charting solo album to date. His fourth full-length, The Art Of Doing Nothing, debuts at Number 18 midweek. While he has enjoyed six Number 1 albums with Take That, Mark’s previous highest charting solo release was 1996’s Green Man, which peaked at Number 33.

This week’s new entries are completed by US rockers Jimmy Eat World’s Damage (21), The Essential Bruce Springsteen (22) and Goo Goo Dolls’ Magnetic (34).

Oh, Black Sabbath coming for #1 then :o Both them and Beady Eye should be extremely frontloaded but Beady Eye probably moreso (as with QOTSA/Disclosure last week, Beady Eye initially got #1 on iTunes but Black Sabbath quickly overtook). Boards Of Canada are doing very well to still be top 3 today, hope they can hold onto the top 5. Disclosure should climb back to at least #3 by Sunday though.

KT Tunstall not doing particularly well but then she's not exactly massively relevant now I guess. Even her last album in 2010 had a top 40 single off it. Thought Jimmy Eat World would be challenging for a top 10 with this album, clearly not. Goo Goo Dolls looking to do worse than their last album (#36 in 2010) despite the massive resurgence of 'Iris' in the intervening years. Looks like people are really not interested in them as a band.

So happy with Mark Owen position although i suspect it will drop throughout the week, he still has some promotion left so staying top 30 would be great but its likely it will end up around #31 or #32 even those would be great as it would mean he still achieves his highest solo chart position in the album chart.

When did Boards of Canada suddenly become so mainstream, 8 years after their last album barely troubled the chart? Methinks that Salad Fingers might have had something to do with it.

The promotional campaign has been very physical orientated. They distributed information about the album to independent shops on Record Store day via coded vinyls, and their album premieres occurred in these stores as well.

Music week says Robin Thicke on almost 90k already. Assuming he sells just over double this by week end, he could be threatening last week's sales record?
Agnetha is already back at #38 with A - Friday's update will be interesting.

Yep, David Firth pretty much got me into Boards of Canada - I bought their first two albums after use in his animations back in 2005 - particularly "Beware the friendly stranger". Seems like a long time ago now! :o
