I really like Talk but WOT. It has to win now, I won't take The Scientist winning.

Viva La Vida is by far and away their best work, should have walked it. :(

Oh and enough Talk hate already, the Kraftwerk sample is just great and really well used.
I admit I gave "Talk" my 11! It MUST win this now- "The Scientist" is good but nothing amazing!

"The Scientist" is the second single from British alternative rock band Coldplay's second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head. The song was written collaboratively by all the band members for the album. It is built around a piano ballad, with its lyrics telling the story about a man's desire to love and an apology. The song was released in the United Kingdom as the second single from A Rush of Blood to the Head and reached number 10 in the UK Charts. It was released in the United States as the third single and reached number 18 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks.

Critics were highly positive towards "The Scientist" and praised the song's piano ballad and falsetto. Several remixes of the track exist, and its riff has been widely sampled. The single's music video won three MTV Music Video Awards, for the video's use of reverse narrative. The song was also featured on the band's 2003 live album Live 2003 and has been a permanent fixture in the band's live set lists since 2002.

(PO: This had a late surge and even beat Viva La Vida in the end which I didn't quite expect, I probably prefer it though, I would describe a slightly more beefed up Trouble and all the more better and beautiful for it. At the time it seemed to be overshadowed by In My Place, but has aged far better for me.)

"Talk" is a song by the British alternative rock band Coldplay. Built around a motif from Kraftwerk's 1981 song "Computer Love", it was written by all members of the band and appeared on their third album, X&Y. In the United States, the song entered at number 86 on the Billboard Hot 100 and elsewhere in the world its success varied, peaking at number one in the Netherlands' Dutch Top 40, becoming their first number one single.

The song received positive reviews, with critics noting the music's sound and memorable lyrics. Both the song and its "Thin White Duke" remix were nominated for the 2007 Grammy Awards, the latter of which won in the category of Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical.

(PO: Well, isn't this a turn out for the books? There was a brief time where this was looking like a mere 'surprise top 5' moment, but when it got into the lead, it never let up and it wins quite comfortably in the end. I am genuinely intrigued to see what you all see in it, Kraftwerk sample bringing some nostalgia back to some of you? I suppose it hasn't had the disadvantage of getting overplayed like some of their other hits. As for my own opinion, I'd honestly almost forgotten about it, but its a lovely little song listening to it now - The sample is used very well and it does seem to possess the emotion that the likes of Speed of Sound lacked (I'll stop insulting that now) and definitely one of the standouts on X&Y so its all good as far as I can see. I'm still literally flabbergasted to be writing this, but hey, surprising results are the best aren't they?)

Low is the standout track from X&Y imo, but Talk is probably the best single so all is good. Surprising winner!

Thanks for doing this Tom, well and speedily run :D

Sorry, but Talk is really average.

PARADISE SHOULD HAVE WON

YAY fantastic and very much a surprise winner. I will take that.

I was initially surprised it topped even the X&Y singles list so that's really quite a shock but a great winner, I gave it a 9 so all good here.

You guys obviously see something in Talk that Chris doesn't himself, he has stated he hates it and they no longer perform it live

I was really shocked it won, but I am glad it wasn't a predictable result, despite it not being a favourite of mine. I'm quite surprised it was The Scientist of all songs that ended up as runner up, I was sure Viva La Vida or Paradise had that wrapped up.

And a big thanks to all for voting, I wasn't sure how this rate was gonna go down here but it exceeded my expectations and I think it was a decent success.

12. Fix You (X&Y)

HOW DO U LIVE WITH URSELF

HOW DO U LIVE WITH URSELF

It is banal, like most of their stuff.

I did love Talk back in the day, but nothing comes close to The Scientist or the last minute from Violet Hill.

A shame X&Y wasn't named their best album here. It really is by far the most consistent and beautiful albums they recorded. SO many highlights. I was going to vote on Monday but didn't have time/resources to refresh some of their singles in my memory :( Hardest Part, In My Place, Talk or Speed of Sound would've received my 11. Their singles are SO good. Mylo Xyloto pretty much sucks though bye

Oh this was such a success! I had a feeling Talk would win as soon as Chez Wombat said there are surprises in the results. Talk got my 10 I believe, it's one of my favourites. I'm surprised at C.W's comments about Speed of Sound! It got my 11 and I actually do find emotion in it. It's interesting how people hear songs differently.

Thanks, this was so fun!

I'm gutted that "Trouble" isn't top ten! The piano riff is absolutely gorgeous, it's by far my favourite song of theirs  "Violet Hill" is my least-favourite single from Viva La Vida..., but it's still very good. It was rightfully overlooked by "Viva La Vida" in the chart though. I'm not a huge fan of "Every Teardrop..." anymore, I'd rank it third/fourth of the Mylo Xyloto singles. "Paradise" got a bit irritating around the turn of the last new year, but I definitely appreciate it as an anthem now. "Clocks" is probably my second-favourite song of theirs overall, another gorgeous piano riff, and one that inspired one of my favourite dance songs of all time. "The Scientist" would also be in my top five songs, I think it's the song that introduced me to their back catalogue (having been most familiar from Viva La Vida... onwards). It probably says a lot that I have no recollection of how "Talk" goes, what did I rate it as?

Thank you for compiling the results with such good effort and style, T(h?)om! T'was a thoroughly enjoyable read :D

Oh am I the only person who LIKES 'Mylo Xyloto' then? Psshht.

'Talk' is a bizarre winner, not a standout in their catalogue at ALL. And I echo the general displeasement (is that even a word) at 'Fix You' missing the top 10. WHAT
