XTM's Fly On The Wings Of Love is WAY better known in the UK than the original Olsen Brothers Eurovision winning version.

I had NO IDEA that it was a cover until a few weeks ago when people were ranking Eurovision winners in some thread

It was a bizarre idea for a cover, and even stranger that it went on to become so big in the UK, it's chart run is my favourite ever, how does a song manage eight weeks in the top ten without going higher than #8?

I played the Olsen Brothers version on my phone at work the other day and the two people working with me both said 'OMG this is a crap cover of that dance song'! Outside of Eurovision fan circles, nobody would remember the original. Although it was a huge hit across Europe it never got a UK release. It did get our 12 points at the time though and released in the digtial era you have to assume that it would have been a UK top 20 hit at least.

I thought of a few more:

Janis Joplin - Me & Bobby McGee (originally by Kris Kristofferson) and Piece Of My Heart (originally by Erma Franklin)

No Doubt - It's My Life (originally by Talk Talk) - for the relatively low peak I hear No Doubt's version tonnes on radio nowadays!

Beyonce - If I Were A Boy (originally by BC Jean) - similar story to Pink's Try and Girl Aloud's Sound Of The Underground earlier in the thread, it was recorded as BC Jean's debut single (she wrote it I think) but Toby Gad ended up playing it to Beyonce, she wanted it and got it so BC got the royalties but not the hit.

Joan Jett - I Love Rock & Roll (originally by The Arrows)

Patsy Cline - Crazy (originally by Willy Nelson)

Some of these are very old examples

"It's Oh So Quiet", made famous by Björk, was originally recorded by Betty Hutton in 1951.
Since when?

Same situation as 'Try', 'Sound of the Underground' etc. where an unknown act originally recorded yet it's still known as a Kylie song.

Can we not just keep it to songs that are actually considered cover versions? :P

On A Night Like This will be Kylie's forevermore. :smoke:

Well I wouldn't always consider songs like that as covers. It's an unknown example here but Haley Reinhart (American Idol contestant from a few years ago?) recorded a song called Free, written by Lucie Silvas. Lucie recorded the initial demo, but I wouldn't say Haley covered it just because Lucie recorded it first.

And since when was Whole Again a cover?

The Fugees - Killing Me Softly originally by Petula Clark.

I'm sure a lot of Motown songs could feature in this thread - I don't think Marvin Gaye's version of 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' is necessarily the original.

Also, Leona Lewis - Run.

Fans of mid-00s Indie will obviously remember the SP version but the general public would associate the song more with Leona since her version is constantly played on talent shows and it was far bigger than the original in both the UK and Europe.

Debateable -- Snow Patrol's version might not have sold loads as a single in its own, but more than 1.5m people own the album it was on (and it was by far the biggest single off the album and thus was the main driving-force for those sales), so...

I really don't think there's anyone (in the UK atleast) who thinks Leona Lewis did the original version of 'Run'.

Atomic Kitten - The Tide Is High

Kylie - On A Night Like This

As noted above, the Blondie version of The Tide Is High (still surely better known than the AK monstrosity) was itself a cover.

But probably over 1 million people own the deluxe of Leona's Spirit album too. :P Although, I still agree that Snow Patrol's version is much more popular and well known than its sales suggest. I would think a lot of people would think Leona did do the original, but a large amount would also know it's a cover. So yeah, very debatable.

I'm not aware of a Petula Clark version. I think the best known older version would be the Roberta Flack one.

Oh no, I don't really consider them proper covers either, it's certainly not the same as an X Factor winner doing a version of another song or whatnot.

When Leona released Run, she was still very much a chart force and when Snow Patrol released it, they were still relatively under the radar. It was doubtless the former was going to outsell it, but it also introduced the original to a new audience and reignited public interest in the song. I would say they are both as well known as each other. Whenever someone sings it on a talent show no matter which style they do it in, both versions seem to benefit.

Quite a lot of people who don't own 'Final Straw' probably own 'Up To Now' though which also contains 'Run' :kink:
