July 14, 201312 yr Author The chart for 10/07/1999 had Virgin and Our Price sales missing, which cost Blur’s Coffee & TV a top ten place, it was re-run in secret for 'industry purposes' only. This also explains the severity of ATB’s sharp slump in sales from 270k to 109k, when the following week its ‘held up’ at 97k. Oooh I do wish they'd release the final real charts with the real sales
July 14, 201312 yr I believe Five - If Ya Gettin' Down had some sales discounted in week 1 (which may have cost it #1). Music Week's explanation for Five's failure to reach No1 was that If Ya Gettin' Down was uncompetitively priced £3.99.
July 14, 201312 yr I remember Na Na Na by One Direction (the b-side to What Makes You Beautiful) got like top 40 on iTunes but never charted officially for some reason, it's not as if it plummeted either I'm sure as their next two b-sides made the top 100...
July 14, 201312 yr I read a while back that a CD format of Madonna's "Beautiful Stranger" was disqualified which cost it a #1 position against S Club's "Bring It All Back".
July 14, 201312 yr It's quite mind boggling why they were pulled, especially "You Are". Easy top10 for them imo, it was even playlisted on Radio 1. Vanessa Amorosi and DJ Encore would've gone top20, on The Box power alone I agree. I guess the record company didn't want to follow up two #1's with 'just a top ten' and preferred to wait and build hype for a single from a new album. It's Ok then only got to #3, which is about the same as You Are probably would have done ultimately so it was a pointless exercise! I love Shine so much, gutted that Vanessa remains a one hit wonder in the UK due to this. Semisonic's Secret Smile would have been top ten on the same chart so it cost them a bigger hit as well! Were ATB's missing sales from those shops never added to his final total? He managed to sell over 800k in the end but I have no idea if that includes those sales or not.
July 14, 201312 yr I was going to mention the wonderful Santa Maria from '95. It should've been huge!
July 14, 201312 yr Puretone Addicted To Bass (31,486) narrowly missed out on the top spot to Aaliyah More Than A Woman (32,081) in 2002 because of a leak of 809 copies the Saturday before release. I read a while back that a CD format of Madonna's "Beautiful Stranger" was disqualified which cost it a #1 position against S Club's "Bring It All Back". I'm not so sure, as there was quite a gap between S Club 7 (190k) and Madonna's (136k) that week, a disqualification of that size would've attracted a lot of press attention.

I love Shine so much, gutted that Vanessa remains a one hit wonder in the UK due to this. Yeah, "Shine", "The Power", "One Thing Leads To Another", she had a great start to her career, and any one of those songs could've been UK hits. I read about that chart a few years back! Semisonic's Secret Smile would have been top ten on the same chart so it cost them a bigger hit as well! Were ATB's missing sales from those shops never added to his final total? Oh I loved that Semisonic song, deserved a top10 for sure.
July 14, 201312 yr Not quite the same, but had this release not been completely messed up this could have been a hell of a lot bigger: H0DTm_bWEjs Released early November 2008, pulled after 2 days and delayed a month because of "something special" planned that never actually ended up materialising, presumably a live TV performance involving Quo and Scooter booked and then later cancelled. Quietly re-released around Christmas and bombed at #57. I remember reading that before it was pulled it was at #10 on the physical charts, which back in 2008 would have guaranteed top 40 at least.
July 14, 201312 yr I remember Lily Allen's 'The Fear' was in the Top 200 before hittting #1 or something. What I didn't know or remember is that were the sales on iTunes (few days before Sunday) disqualified or were they just pre-orders? Edited July 14, 201312 yr by FM11
July 14, 201312 yr Yeah, "Shine", "The Power", "One Thing Leads To Another", she had a great start to her career, and any one of those songs could've been UK hits. Disqualified sales are never added to the totals I believe, so ATB's "9PM" is below it's real total. Oh I loved that Semisonic song, deserved a top10 for sure. I agree, her debut album was brilliant. Steam and U R Mine were my other favourites but the whole thing was great. What a shame :( I guess it could be anything between about 30-60k, I'm not sure how much of the singles market share Virgin and Our Price had at the time. I know I bought 9PM (Till I Come) in Virgin as I can remember buying it having been wowed instantly after hearing it on their listening post for the first time. But it would have been in the first week not the second so I'm glad my sale wasn't disqualified! Not quite the same, but had this release not been completely messed up this could have been a hell of a lot bigger: H0DTm_bWEjs Released early November 2008, pulled after 2 days and delayed a month because of "something special" planned that never actually ended up materialising, presumably a live TV performance involving Quo and Scooter booked and then later cancelled. Oh yeah, still, it's not like they were without success in 2008, how on earth did they manage a #1 album!?! Let alone one which actually stayed around the top end of the charts for a respectable period of time!
July 14, 201312 yr Disqualified sales are never added to the totals I believe, so ATB's "9PM" is below it's real total. The sales weren't "Disqualified" though, merely missing from the chart that week due to an error, when the error was discovered they would have been added into the final total for the year.

Had Vidcapper been tracking the YTD sales in 1999 he'd have had a big shock when the final tallies were announced in that case
July 14, 201312 yr I remember Lily Allen's 'The Fear' was in the Top 200 before hittting #1 or something. What I didn't know or remember is that were the sales on iTunes (few days before Sunday) disqualified or were they just pre-orders? Much the same with Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" which charted at No 73 before being withdrawn due to an I-tunes leak. They would be added to the "total" :D
July 14, 201312 yr Not exactly disqualified but never released on iTunes as a single (even though a fake remix got as high as #12 I believe?) "Obsessed" by Mariah Carey could have easily been a Top 10 for her, and was very much what she needed at the time imo.
July 14, 201312 yr Much the same with Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" which carted at No 74 before being withdrawn due to an I-tunes leak. They would be added to the "total" :D And a live version of Estelle's "American Boy" sneaked into the top 75 before being pulled for the official release a few weeks later.
July 14, 201312 yr I've mentioned these recently in other threads but they seem relevant here as well: Rascal Flatts' 'Bless The Broken Road' was denied a top 75 place one week last year because for some reason almost all of its sales were attributed to 'Bless The Broken Radio' - that showed up at #76 while the actual song had something like 50 sales attributed to it well outside the chart but had the error not occurred the song would have scraped the top 75. The song then climbed to #41 the next week although no error that time, just some coincidental bad luck. Similarly Giorgio Moroder and Philip Oakey's 'Together In Electric Dreams' had to settle for #90 and a second entry just outside the top 100 because its sales were split between the Giorgio/Philip track and a version credited to 'The Human League' that was actually identical. They were combined the following week and the song climbed to #46 but IIRC it would have been around there the previous week as well without the error.
July 14, 201312 yr Author Had Vidcapper been tracking the YTD sales in 1999 he'd have had a big shock when the final tallies were announced in that case  Oh right, yeah missing sales is definitely different than disqualified. I thought those ATB sales were disqualified
July 15, 201312 yr The brilliant 'Santa Maria' by Tatjana was destined to be a major hit in 1995, but got disqualified due to suspicions of chart-fixing (multiple copies being bought by the same person/people). A reissue a year later sneaked in at #40 at least Great song - and hot girl too! and a Samantha Fox cover got to #31 in 1998.Not that covering (up) was what she was best known for... Had Vidcapper been tracking the YTD sales in 1999 he'd have had a big shock when the final tallies were announced in that case  Grin. Usually such 'missing' sales still appear in C+'s YTD lists, so I can keep track of them. Of course, the biggest crop of 'missing' sales was in late 2006, when songs whose physical single had been deleted, got their download sales excluded from the chart. :(
July 15, 201312 yr Nicki French 'For All We Know' - Initial midweek of #17 but ended up charting at #42 due to a barcode issue which affected copies sold at Woolworths, Nicki French 'Is There Anybody Out There' DQ'd due to chart fixing [she was on the same label as Tatjana who had the same happen to her track]. Lemonescent 'Unconditional Love' had a Top 20 midweek but was DQ'd due to chart fixing.
