So what songs have outdone your expectations in the charts? Some recent examples:

Stooshe - Black Heart

I thought this would be the end of them as it was dated and terrible in my opinion, but it went on to smash and outsell any single released by The Saturdays ever. Thankfully everything they've done since has flopped.

Mariah Carey - #Beautiful (feat. Miguel)

Really, who expected this to be big? I don't think I need to explain about her irrelevance outside of December.

Arctic Moneys - Do I Wanna Know?

I thought this would be another frontloaded OA/OS hit, but it's still top 20 on iTunes after all these weeks!

Naughty Boy - La La La (feat. Sam Smith)

I never thought it would be a possible million seller until it was selling consistently well for many weeks. And it's still in the top 10 now, so yeah, definitely not a non-#1 like I thought it would be before I saw its opening sales

Any other examples?

Get Lucky, unbelievably average and half-arsed sounding track, has somehow been absolutely huge. Baffling.

Continues on from last years biggest seller of Gotye though, which is also shite and was also huge.

Get Lucky....

How this went on to sell a million copies and spend 4 weeks at #1 is beyond me

I don't think personal opinions should come into it... but yeah Daft Punk has definitely over-performed, nobody in their right mind would have predicted even a week before its release that it would go on to sell 1m copies!

Not sure if these count, but

Pink - Just Like A Pill

Blu Cantrell / Sean Paul - Breathe

I remember at the time both of those just seemed to come out of nowhere and go straight in at Number 1, completely unexpected. So from a chart position point of view, they definitely over-performed.

Florence + the Machine - Spectrum - Speaks for itself

Angel - Wonderful - Maybe took advantage of a low sales period, but still had a great run

Imagine Dragons - Radioactive - Did well to chart at #35 last year with little/no airplay (afaik), but then properly took off a few months later!

When it was first announced Maroon 5 were doing a duet with Christina Aguilera, both rapidly fading in relevance at the time, I doubt many would've guessed the song would've gone on to be one of the best selling songs of the century.

The funniest part of this song which made me laugh every time:

'Innit girls?'

Girls: In a barely audible, weak whisper: Yeaaaaaah

It was like Don't Cha by the Pussycats, with Nicole turned up and all of the other girls' responses turned down.

Is this based on personal opinions on songs we don't like or what on paper should've flopped?

The latter, i'd assume

I'd say 'What About Us' going to #1 and becoming the fastest selling song of the year (at the time) considering it wasn't even top 20 on airplay and The Sats had a bad reputation for flopping was a big shock.

Florence's 'Spectrum' was my shock #1 of last year.

Nicole Scherzinger - Don't Hold Your Breath (was expecting low top 10 at best for this)

Agnes - Release Me

Maroon 5 + Christina Aguilera - Moves Like Jagger (before release this had #73 smash written all over it for me)

It was generally accepted it was going to be #1 a week or two before its release though...

:manson: at people who even thought that this was to do with opinions in the first place.

I didn't expect Hey Porsche, Still Into You, Lighters and Chocolate to do as well as they did from chart hits in 2013.

I was baffled by La La La's success at the time as well!

Robin Thicke was always going to be a number one but I really don't get how for what i consider to be an average track that it's sold so many copies in such a short space of time!

Also, Bingo Players getting to number one given that this had #10 written all over it for me but to go on and get two weeks at number 1 was a pleasant shock !!

And all of Calvin Harris' post album singles, 3 top 5's of which 1 got to number 1

Oh just forgot 1 very obvious choice:

When I first heard Rudimental's Feel The Love I loved it from 1st listen and hoped it would get top 40, but as I kept listening and the hype was building I was so shocked to see it get to number 1 and its sales and chart run were brilliant I never expected it to do that we'll but so happy it did, it did not sound like anything in the charts at the time and even after a year I'm still not bored of it!

'Sweet Nothing' wasn't a post-album single. His actual post-album singles have done extremely well though, 2 big top 5 hits already and another looking likely to go at least top 10.

Also wasn't expecting I Need A Dollar or Pompeii to have as much success as they did!

Pompeii for definite, I know the hype was building up, but even so, for them to go in at #2 was pretty incredible, not to mention then to go on and get 8 weeks in the Top 10 and 21 weeks (and counting) in the Top 40!

I wouldn't say it over performed but I definitely did not expect Bridgit Mendler's "Ready or Not" to be a UK Top 10 hit, spend 4 weeks in the top 10, have decent longevity overall and sell quarter of a million copies when I first heard it last year
