July 25, 201312 yr Oh James Blunt's You're Beautiful is probably the main example of this - I thought it would peak at #12 when it charted there and never thought that it could spend five weeks at #1 later on during that summer, let alone shoot straight into the Top 3 randomly (why was that?). Radio just seemed really late to cotton onto it, maybe because they didn't expect it to even dent the chart at all and when it did they thought 'oh, let's support it, it's a pleasant MOR track'. The album took off gradually and it carried the single along with it. I remember buying it in its first week when it debuted at #12 and thinking 'what a pleasant song, glad it's done so well' I recall thinking 18-25 was where it was going to peak initially! I was pleased that it did so well in the end but 5 weeks at #1 did seem a little TOO much success, alongside the insane sales of the album. No wonder everybody got sick of him so quickly, so overexposed in the summer of 2005.
July 25, 201312 yr Katie Melua's "Closest Thing To Crazy" is another good example... for her GENRE of music, I never expected the song to hang on to the top 40 for so long (peaking at #10). And for the Eva Cassidy collaboration, need I say more?
July 25, 201312 yr The number of my friends who who were saying they loved 'that Daft Punk song' about a day or two after it debuted was astonishing... Yeah, same with me. I still don't understand now how it happened to be honest. I did think it would do something, because they had a clip of the song out, and I saw it making rounds on Twitter and other forums, but I didn't expect anything on the level that it actually did. I remember buying it in its first week when it debuted at #12 and thinking 'what a pleasant song, glad it's done so well' I recall thinking 18-25 was where it was going to peak initially! Gosh, it must've been weird for you what happened afterwards. Edited July 25, 201312 yr by Eric_Blob
July 26, 201312 yr Songs that suprised me with their success: Loic Essien (ive probably spelt this wrong) - How We Roll Robyn - With Every Heartbeat Charlie Brown - On My Way Olly Murs - Dear Darlin' Wiley - Heatwave (I thoughy We'll Be Coming Back would definitely be #1 that week! ) Roll Deep - Good Times
July 26, 201312 yr Chasing Cars. I heard it on the album and I thought it was awful even before I found out it was becoming a single.
July 26, 201312 yr Author Wiley - Heatwave (I thought We'll Be Coming Back would definitely be #1 that week! )Really? Everyone on Buzzjack was certain that Heatwave would be #1 lol, what was surprising was We'll Be Coming Back beating it to the iTunes #1 (of course Wiley overtook him later)
July 26, 201312 yr Will Young - Jealousy: Didn't expect it to go Top 40, never mind Top 10. Glad it did though! Fall Out Boy - My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (light 'Em Up): This held on pretty well after a bit of a dive in week 2, but managed to stick around for a bit afterwards.
July 26, 201312 yr Get Lucky, unbelievably average and half-arsed sounding track, has somehow been absolutely huge. Baffling. YES. Only I find it a bit above average. So surprising it could manage to become such a huge hit. When I was in LDN (it was its fourth week at #1 I think) it was playing literally everywhere! I think that its success may be due to the song's simplicity and the band not really moving away from their roots and the sound they became popular with in the first place. Plus it's been SO long since they last released any music. I don't know really.
July 26, 201312 yr A recent one I think is will.i.am's 'Bang Bang'. Bearing in mind it is not actually an official single, it has been having a very steady chart run in the Top 10 recently and it looks like that will continue. It was obvious that his performance on The Voice would give the song a massive boost and radio catching on has obviously helped, but I wouldn't have expected it to be still going strong at the moment.
July 26, 201312 yr 'Whole Again' was definitely a shock success for me. Definitely! At the time I didn't even expect that to go top 10. :o
July 26, 201312 yr Oh yes, Whole Again for definite! A recent one I think is will.i.am's 'Bang Bang'. It was obvious that his performance on The Voice would give the song a massive boost and radio catching on has obviously helped, but I wouldn't have expected it to be still going strong at the moment. Yeah I agree with that too, especially as it's such a different sounding song for him. I can see it being Top 40 for a good couple of months yet too! Edited July 26, 201312 yr by mango

July 26, 201312 yr I'm pretty sure it is an official single. It's classed as a promotional single on sites I've checked. I don't think it has been released anywhere as it hasn't charted outside of the UK/Ireland aside from #188 in France (probably cherry-picking upon album release) and Belgium.
July 26, 201312 yr It's a grey line these days between a promotional single and an official post-album single...
