Did you know that PSY's favourite day is Saturday?

One of the best moments of iTunes history

I would love for another K-pop song to smash but that's not going to happen :( I don't think even a new Psy song would be a guaranteed hit, all his hype has died now - I don't think he'll ever go top 40 again.

:D!

It was strange that it was only when it got to #10 that it started climbing up the chart so rapidly. People probably thought the song wasn't available on UK iTunes or something, it was in the middle of the week during work/student term time as well which made it even more strange.

The only person that can get away with releasing a single straight away in the UK and it going to number 1 is probably Rihanna IMO .

Maybe, although even with Rihanna she tends to have unpredictable success with her singles.

I wouldn't say GaGa releases club bangers, she releases electro-pop. I don't think I've ever heard her be played in a club actually. Maybe 'Just Dance' but nothing else. :o

I've never heard a Lady Gaga song in a club either (not even Just Dance).

It's why they can't change their sound every release, they have to release either spicey or gaga music, no matter if it's popular or not.

I totally agree with your post. If you want to have wiggle room and be able to switch around genres later in your career, you need to be mixing it up from day one. It's too late years into your career to switch it up, it usually doesn't turn out well.

The only exception I can think of is with teen pop stars, they tend to release a song that intentionally a contrast to their previous music, like I'm A Slave 4 U, Dirrty, We Can't Stop, etc. That's probably the only case where I think it works, and even then I think they do it more for their image, and to stir up controversy for media attention.

Was it actually on iTunes from the start? I remember the first time I saw the video the song wasn't really anywhere in the chart. I don't know if that's because it wasn't on UK iTunes yet, or if it was because I was one of the earlier people to watch the video. It's incredible how the song blew up so much. Even today it's still getting a large amount of Youtube views. Can't believe it's a year ago already, doesn't seem that long.

Oh god, don't start him of with this again

Completely true! But, as you say, I think their image was more pigeon-holed rather than their sound. There's not a general "teen pop" sound. Also, GaGa was one of the main artists who brought electro-pop back to the charts (I can't think of anyone else doing electro-pop who had as much success as her in late 2008 bar Katy Perry with HnC) so that sound is stuck to her. Britney, Christina and Miley were just doing what each other were doing really - standard pop.

Actually, come to think of it, didn't Britney really underperform with the 'I'm A Slave 4 U' era? Christina underperformed with Stripped before 'Beautiful' smashed (in the US at least).

Maybe, although even with Rihanna she tends to have unpredictable success with her singles.

Really? Back in the day (gawd  ) Poker Face/ Just Dance and especially bad Romance were played all over the clubs, Born this Way even too. (Well, the clubs around me do play Adele and her voice is so LOUD when magnified it hurts my ears and they turned it up so much it made the shot glasses bounce along and off the table haha!)

But yeah, the only successful example is teen pop stars with their inevitable 'I'm all grown now' song, as that's almost like a staple, something to be expected. I guess it works also to a lesser extent for solo artists leaving a band, but then they need to be switching it up off the bat and for the rest of their albums.

I just don't understand where her fans are though - Born this Way 60,000 in a day and this can barely manage ten in one? :( Such a massive drop off in 2 years.

What official chart postion would a pre order like this equate to?

Don't be homophobic. Gay clubs play exactly the same music as any other club. (I'm only joking ).

All the people who had electropop hits in 2008 (Rihanna, Britney, Katy, etc.) they weren't doing 100% electropop. Like Rihanna had Take a Bow and Rehab either side of Disturbia iirc. Now, they easily could have released constant singles like that and had a long stream of massive hits, since that's how it was a the time, but it would hurt them in the long term if they had done that, in my opinion.

Yeah, I think I'm a Slave 4 U, etc. under-performed in the charts, although maybe it would've been a success in terms of transforming their image.

There's a remix of Rolling in the Deep I hear quite a lot.

In other news Gaga is still increasing on Kworb like the QUEEN that she is.

She has yet to earn such a title lol

My update shows her in the red with Avicii marginally behind, if anything she could soon be dropping to number 3

What official chart postion would a pre order like this equate to?

Hard to tell. Depends how well it holds up in the next few weeks really (i'm fairly sure they're pre-order for 'Wasting My Young Years' went top 100 at one point). This does give he hope it'll at least chart in the top 40 though

It sold 10,500 in 7 hours.

Even if you multiply that up to the 14 hours that 'Born This Way' had on its first release day (which is statistically dubious anyway) that still wouldn't be anything like 60k though.

That's true actually, I never hear Lady Gaga in normal clubs and I go out A LOT...

I can't even think of many times I've heard her being played in gay clubs. Telephone definitely gets played at the gay clubs that I go to, but I can't think of any other songs I've heard much.

I heard this for the first time today on the music channels. I really hope it flops and I think it will. There's something about really in-your-face gobby girl-groups (and boybands I guess although they're much rarer) that I dislike a lot. I think they will go the same way as the Parade group but without a top 10 hit.
