And sales were lower 4 years ago so it was harder to achieve the millionth sale... And we could go on and on...

2009 had pretty huge sales, they have got a bit bigger since but we're not exactly comparing with a song from 2003. Plus the bulk of the increase in sales is applicable mainly to lower down songs and trickle sales which actually *benefits* Gaga in this context. 'Blurred Lines' is one of the biggest hits of the century, 'Poker Face' is somewhere up there as well but there's no way you can argue it's been as big IMO.

Unbelievably Blurred Lines is not far from #12 now.

It's out the top 10 on iTunes here, but Blurred Lines is at its 9th week at #1 in the US!

I'd also say that Blurred Lines was a bigger song and will probably stand the test of time more than Poker Face.

(why are we discussing this?)

I don't think The Wanted will get a peak higher than #09 this week, it's dropping quite fast and it's only Tuesday. I don't think it should have been on air, I doubt Radio 1 will support it and I think Capital will hesitate supporting it as much especially if it's free falling down the charts (look at Notorious).

I don't think you can compare ' We Own The Night ' to ' Everything Has Changed ' as The Wanted are going to be incredibly front loaded and as I previously stated, I don't think it will do well on radio if it starts dropping fast next week!

I definitely think Capital will support it for at least a couple more weeks, I don't think its going to drop down the charts as fast as many people expect.

I think we need to discuss ' Ho Hey'. It needs a 59p deduction!

Kleenex must be making an absolute fortune over there at the moment!

It is a mini tangent Griff - probably better than some tangents we get in here. Not sure what started it! I have a sneaky suspicion that Blurred Lines may not age that well and won't be seen as a classic in the future, but I guess the only real way to measure that is to look back in 4/5 years. It has already out sold PF and I was wondering the other day at how far it could go sales wise now.

Lady Gaga at 47.80% now.

Because Lady Gaga knocked Blurred Lines out of the iTunes top 10 after donkey years.

Ho Hey would have a 'Little Talks' effect if it went 59p probably.

Is anyone out there who is Team Ellie for this week for the #1 spot?

#98 Midnight City  this has to go back into the top 40
As much as I LOVE Applause, I really want Ellie to get her first #1 still, and I think that'll be the case.
I Gotta Feeling and cultural impact. I must really hope not.
'I Gotta Feeling' is iconic.
I think 'Blurred Lines' will definitely go down in history as a classic. I can see it being played in the clubs and on the radio 10 years from now. 2013 is actually looking like 2003 in terms of the busy market and the "modern classics" released that year - 'Hey Ya', 'Crazy In Love', 'Milkshake' (or was that 2004?).
Which is not massively impressive considering 'Poker Face' has been out for over 4 years and 'Blurred Lines' for about 3 months... :P Obviously 'Poker Face' was a big hit but it's not comparable to 'Blurred Lines' at all.

But as Ben says sales now are greater than they were 4 years ago (even at the top end of the chart - just do a simple comparison of the average sales of a #1,#5,#10 etc now compared to the same position 4 years ago when PF was out) therefore a direct comparison of sales now against sales 4 years ago is misleading unless some adjustment is made.

Plus, PF was released approx 3-4 months after the release if its parent album; BL was released in advance of its album therefore BL is always going to sell more, again meaning that comparing straightforward sales isn't comparing like with like.

No matter what 'adjustment' you make, there is no possible way you can seriously say 'Poker Face' is as big a hit as 'Blurred Lines' when it's been outsold already in less than 3 months. Sales haven't increased THAT much. (The 'post-album single' argument is more relevant perhaps but by the time 'Blurred Lines' is reduced to trickle sales it's going to be far enough ahead of 'Poker Face' to account for people who bought the album instead of just the song unless you want to be deluded and say it lost out on hundreds of thousands of sales from that).

I'm not even saying 'Poker Face' wasn't massive (it was the highest selling single of 2009 after all, ignoring the fact 'I Gotta Feeling' overtook it shortly afterwards), but it's just being deluded to deny 'Blurred Lines' is much bigger.

09. The Wanted - We Own The Night

18. Imagine Dragons - It's Time

25. Justin Timberlake - Take Back The Night

32. One Republic - Counting Stars

38. Katy Perry - Roar

44. Kings Of Leon - Use Somebody

56. Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars (Bre Agog)

80. Vanessa Carlton - A Thousand Miles

104. Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag

106. Paramore - Ain't It Fun

109. Jason Derulo Feat 2 Chainz - Talk Dirty

233. Rizzle Kicks - Lost Generation

249. Selena Gomez - Slow Down

252. The Saturdays Feat Sean Paul - What About Us

257. Anna Kendrick - Cups

267. Matt Cardle Feat Melanie C - Loving You

282. Miley Cyrus - Party In The Usa

We don't even have to look at the charts, we can just use our memories to determine which song was bigger, and it's pretty obvious. Poker Face was a hit more like Let Her Go by Passenger, undeniably sold bucket-loads, but was just kind of "there".

Poker Face may have been a post-album single, but Robin Thicke hasn't gone around pretending he's a hermaphrodite to get more sales, so I'd say they're even.

The logic employed in this thread never ceases to amaze.

It's ridiculous to even try to assess how "big" Blurred Lines has been just yet. Come back in two years and have this argument then.

I'm sorry, Eric, this is coming from a non Gaga fan but your opinions on the success of her singles are completely void since you never look at it objectively. So what if other songs outsold PF, you can't diminish it's success or try to rationalise it by saying some factor other than people liking the song led to its success.
