So while the singles chart hots up we are also on course for the weakest album sales of the year - Will be surprised if the #1 album passes 15-16k this week.

 

Richard & Adam could actually get another week close to 20k I think (saying that as if that's a good sales achievement). They had a pretty small dropoff from their first week to their second.

 

Imagine Dragons might climb back to #2, don't think they'll challenge for #1 as they were miles behind R&A last week and don't have a big sales boost due for this week as far as I'm aware. White Lies could also challenge for another #2 album, 'BIG TV' has done decently on iTunes to say it seems to have no hype around it whatsoever. It'll probably be the only new entry in the top 40 though (unless the new Hoodie Allen EP that's top 10 on iTunes can manage it, he did get to #64 with a digital-only EP last year).

Back on topic, I think Ellie should be fine. Her lead keeps building while Lady Gaga/her record label keep delaying the release. I think Ellie is heading for 95-100k and can see Lady Gaga getting somewhat close, with 80-85k by the end of the week.

Predict all you want but your reason for predicting it was pretty baseless.

Well, the song being weak is a pretty good reason. We will never know how general public can react so we essentially don't need any reason to make a prediction. The only thing left is the feeling "oh yeah, this is an instant hit, people will love it / this sounds like a very generic and forgettable ditty". I had the second thought so on this basis I'm not predicting big things for it. On the basis of hype and name alone however, a Top 5 is possible hence I gave it the #5 peak. Was it enough of a "reason" now?

The new Arctic Monkeys single has a physical CD available too. I'm not suggesting it will help sales much but it's part of an album pre-order deal whereby you get 99p off the price of the album when it comes out, when you buy the 99p single now. Could shift a few physicals for 99p when it's basically free if you plan to get the album I guess, might help their chart fortunes!

Ellie Goulding could be heading for her first UK No 1 single with Burn outselling its two closest rivals combined.

 

The newly-issued Polydor track had shifted around 63,000 copies by the end of business on Tuesday, according to the Official Charts Company, giving it a lead of about 30,000 units over nearest challenger Wake Me Up by Positiva/PRMD's Avicii who holds at 2. RCA act Miley Cyrus is down to 3 in the midweeks having debuted at No 1 last Sunday with We Can't Stop.

 

Goulding's current UK chart peak is 2, achieved by her cover of the Elton John hit Your Song in 2010, while Burn is also on course to become the latest No 1 for Ryan Tedder and Greg Kurstin who produced and co-wrote the track. Tedder was the co-writer of Leona Lewis's 2007 chart-topper Bleeding Love, while Kurstin's credits includes Lilly Allen's UK No 1 single The Fear.

 

Burn's retail debut comes in a busy week for the singles market with new releases also out from Arctic Monkeys, Lady Gaga and The Wanted. In the case of Arctic Monkeys, it is likely to deliver the Domino signings their first Top 10 single in six years with Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High new at 5 in the midweeks. They last made the Top 10 in 2007 with Fluorescent Adolescent.

 

The Wanted are also set to return to the Top 10 with the Global Talent/Island-issued We Own The Night at No 6 in the week so far, while Lady Gaga's rush-released Interscope/Polydor cut Applause is new at 11, but is likely to finish much higher once the week's final chart is published on Sunday. A first taster of her third studio album Artpop, it has arrived at retail earlier than planned after being subject to a leak.

 

Holding at 4 in the midweeks is the Polydor single Summertime Sadness by Lana Del Rey Vs Cedric Gervais, while Tinie Tempah's Parlophone track Trampoline featuring 2 Chainz drops 3-7 and Interscope/Polydor act Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines featuring TI and Pharrell Williams falls 5-8. Island act John Newman is also down, slipping 6-9 with Love Me Again, and there is also a three-place drop to 10 for Jay-Z's Roc Nation/Virgin EMI single Holy Grail with Justin Timberlake.

 

Island/Strictly Rhythm's Ray Foxx with Boom Boom (Heartbeat) featuring Rachel K Collier is new at 13 at this stage of the week, while Columbia band The Vaccines are new at 34 with Melody Calling.

 

In a very quiet week on albums Britain's Got Talent finalists Richard & Adam could spend a third week at No 1 with their Sony title The Impossible Dream, even though it has sold fewer than 10,000 copies in the week so far. Behind it at 2 with fewer than 5,000 copies sold is Fiction act White Lies' newy-issued third album Big TV, while Asylum/Atlantic act Rudimental's former No 1 Home races back up 7-3 with sales increasing 71%.

 

Week-on-week sales of Interscope/Polydor act Imagine Dragons' Night Visions are virtually static as it eases 3-4 in the midweeks, while Nettwerk act Passenger's All The Little Lights is down 4-5 and Parlophone act David Guetta's Nothing But The Beat climbs 9-6. Michael Buble's Reprise/Warner Bros set To Be Loved loses a place to 7 and The Civil Wars' self-titled second Columbia album is down to 8 having debuted at 2 last Sunday.

 

Jay-Z's Roc Nation/Virgin EMI set Magna Carta Holy Grail drops 8-9 and Gentlemen Of The Road/Island act Mumford & Sons are looking to return to the Top 10 again with Babel, which climbs 13-10 in the midweeks. It is currently just ahead in sales of Rod Stewart's Capitol/Decca album Time, which could drop out of the Top 10 for the first time after a 13-week run.

 

Outside the Top 10, the only brand new album among the Top 40 sellers is See You There, a new set from veteran country star Glen Campbell and released on the Surfdog label.

Lady Gaga’s new single Applause is already at Number 11 after less than a day on sale.

 

Lady Gaga’s new single, Applause, has almost reached the Top 10, entering today at Number 11 after just seven hours on sale.

 

The track was rush released yesterday (Tuesday, August 13) after it leaked online over the weekend with Lady Gaga declaring a “pop music emergency” on her official Twitter account.

 

According to the Official Charts Company’s latest sales data, Applause had sold over 10,500 copies up to midnight last night, having gone on sale late afternoon.

 

Since making her Official Singles Chart debut in 2009, Lady Gaga has clocked up nine Official Singles Chart Top 10 hits, including four Number 1s. Her debut UK single, Just Dance, has gone on to sell over a million copies.

White Lies have had virtually no radio play behind them this era though, #2 so far is great! (although it obviously won't stay there)

 

I expect Lady GaGa will debut at #2 or #3 this week - she has plenty of time to make up the Sunday/Monday lost sales. Great to see Kings of Leon climbing, I am enjoying "Wait For Me" more than "Supersoaker" and Arctic Monkeys at #5 is very. *.* (Though will probably fall to low Top 10, #8/#9 by Sunday)

First time hearing 'We Own The Night' and 'Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?' on the chart update today then (shame they didn't play Drake's song, guess I'll have to actually look it up myself, ugh effort). The former sounds like a weak dancepop-ified cover of 'Some Nights', which is still an improvement over 'Walks Like Rihanna' to be fair. The latter is another great track from AM, everything from them this era has been much better than their last 2 albums! Incredible to see them looking at a top 10 single.

 

The Vaccines getting midweek top 40 is good but #34 is probably not high enough to secure a top 40 place on Sunday. Should be top 50 though.

 

Pleased to see White Lies getting midweek #2 in the albums and I wouldn't be too surprised to see them holding onto #2 like The Civil Wars did last week. Wasn't expecting to see Rudimental's album overtaking Imagine Dragons :o

 

Don't think we're gonna get 5 new entries top 10, 'Applause' will climb in obviously but if Ray Foxx manages to climb in he'll probably be knocking out The Wanted in the process based on iTunes. Inclined to say there'll be 4 newies top 10 with Ray at #11.

Ellie is selling to Avicii’s Wake Me Up (Number 2) by almost two copies to one. I expect Lady Gaga to debut around #3 to #5. I'm pretty sure Avici will end up ahead of Lady Gaga, bearing in mind Lady Gaga is still lagging behind 2 days and a half.
