Posted September 10, 201311 yr I thought it would be interesting to have a topic in light of information provided by Radio 1 about their 100 most played songs of the past 5 years, seeing as though there are threads for the playlist as well as for the airplay charts. It was provided as part of 'Even More Music' month where listeners are encouraged to vote for their favourite with the Top 30 being counted down on a special radio show. Most of the list looks fairly accurate but there are some glaring omissions imo (such as Rihanna). Azealia Banks feat. September 10, 201311 yr No surprises here, I've heard all of these many times on the station (except some of the earlier ones as I didn't listen to much radio then) I do agree that it's missing Rihanna, We Found Love and What's My Name should be here imo
September 10, 201311 yr No Olly Murs? Isn't he massive on radio? Same with Bruno Mars. Shocked to see 'Ill Manors' there.
September 10, 201311 yr I find it difficult to believe that 1. The Saturdays would have a single in the Top 100 when Rihanna doesn't. 2. 'Wake Me Up' is already one of the most played songs on radio 1 in the last 5 years when it premiered a few months ago.
September 10, 201311 yr Oh some people will always find a way to complain. I think the list is mostly fantastic and incredibly representative of what Radio 1 has played since I started listening around this time five years ago.
September 10, 201311 yr No Olly Murs? Isn't he massive on radio? Same with Bruno Mars. Shocked to see 'Ill Manors' there. Olly Murs and Bruno Mars have crossover appeal, they get airplay from the adult contemporary stations like Heart FM, Radio 2, etc. which puts them so high on the overall chart.
September 10, 201311 yr It's not too shocking to see Rihanna missing out given just how many singles she's had. It would have been impossible for the station to keep one song in heavy rotation for too long before a new one was released. She could well be one of the station's most played artists but that's more because of the wealth of songs she's featured on as opposed to a single hit.
September 10, 201311 yr Bingo Players feat. Far East Movement - Get Up (Rattle) Chase and Status feat. Liam Bailey - Blind Faith Far East Movement - Like a G6 Gotye feat. Kimbra - Somebody That I Used to Know John Newman - Love Me Again Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Wanz - Thrift Shop Naughty Boy feat. Sam Smith - La La La Rudimental feat. John Newman - Feel the Love The Black Eyed Peas - Boom Boom Pow Yolanda Be Cool Vs DCUP - We Speak No Americano One of these should win imo.
September 10, 201311 yr No Katy Perry? I thought Hot'n'Cold was played to death by every radio (mind, I don't live in UK)
September 10, 201311 yr Just voted in this (for 'Language', sure that will surprise literally nobody). The list seems to be given in a completely random order on the voting thing, unless it is listed from most played to 100th most played... in which case The Prodigy's 'Omen' is in the top 10, gwon. Think it's more likely to be a random order though unless anyone knows otherwise. Although 'Language' is my clear favourite on this list, there's so much good stuff on there
September 10, 201311 yr The Veronicas - Untouched Seeing the Veronicas on the list reminded me how they used to hammer Untouched back in the day! Felt like it was on A List for a full year  The list seems to be given in a completely random order on the voting thing, unless it is listed from most played to 100th most played... in which case The Prodigy's 'Omen' is in the top 10, gwon. Think it's more likely to be a random order though unless anyone knows otherwise. Seems to be random because I just went to the page and it has 'Omen' somewhere in the middle. That's probably good though...otherwise if everyone saw the same list, the songs at the top might have an advantage over the ones on the bottom. When I click refresh, though, the order doesn't change...
September 10, 201311 yr People wondering where Rihanna and Katy Perry are when "they're always on the radio" forget that this is a Radio 1 list. Those two had massive hits because every other mainstream station wanted them to, the fact that "Rope" is here just goes to show that Radio 1 don't always get their own way. It's such a shame "Watercolour" didn't get to #1.
September 11, 201311 yr This list shows what I really like about Radio 1 - They threw a lifeline to the likes of Islands, The Cave etc. and made them become the minor hits they were, rather than the sheepish likes of Capital playing us Rihanna for the hundredth time that hour. We should REALLY all be thankful for it rather than question it! Very hard to pick a favourite, there's loads of good stuff. I went with the sublime I Remember  Edited September 11, 201311 yr by Chez Wombat
September 11, 201311 yr It's such a shame "Watercolour" didn't get to #1. I love that song. Pendulum (not the whole group though) were performing in a club I was in last year, and Watercolour was the last song they played, everybody loved it. If that song was released now, it might have gone #1 since we've had a few drum & bass songs do it recently. Very hard to pick a favourite, there's loads of good stuff. I went with the sublime I Remember  I like I Remember. I always say this when the song is brought up, but I hear it so much in my gym, so it's probably going to end up one of my favourite work out songs. There was also Ghosts N Stuff (coincidentally a collab with Rob Swire from Pendulum ) which I liked. September 11, 201311 yr I find it hard to believe this list accurately represents the 100 most played songs on Radio 1 in the last 5 years! Especially surprised that these are on the list: Gramaphonedzie - Why Don't You Marina and the Diamonds - Hollywood Plan B - iLL Manors And FOUR SHM songs? And is Dog Days Are Over REALLY Florence + the Machine's most played song on Radio 1? Agreed about the Rihanna omissions, but also Kings Of Leon - I find it hard to believe either Sex On Fire or Use Somebody wouldn't be in the Top 100!
September 11, 201311 yr And also how could Avicii's Wake Me Up possibly have racked up the same number of plays already in 2 months than some of those songs that have been being played for 5 years? But complaining aside, it is a pretty good (if not 100% accurate) general representation of the kind of varied music Radio 1 play... it would be interesting to see a similar list for Capital, though I think 50% of that list would be made up of Rihanna, Katy Perry, Calvin Harris & Jessie J songs  Edited September 11, 201311 yr by mango
September 11, 201311 yr P!nk feat. Nate Ruess - Screech. I KNEW IT!!! I TOLD Y'ALL that BBC/ Capital RAPED the replay button with that, it was always playing!!! Urgh, on the top 100 in just a few months shows how much they hammered it, trying to force it into becoming a hit for some unfathomable reason.
