Posted September 15, 201311 yr Like most people here I love music and I love certain songs more than certain other songs. And I love charts too. I have my own charts in my head of my favourite singles and albums. But I really wouldn't care if my favourite single came back into the charts to sell a few more copies. In fact, I prefer if they didn't. Their time has passed and they did what they could. So, are you like me and wouldn't give a fig if you're favourite hit from yesteryear was reduced to 59p or got the next M&S ad deal and made it back into the charts so that it could get every closer to the elusive 1 million sales mark (or 2 million if you're Chasing Cars or Sex on Fire)? Or would you happily see it at number 93 forever? / someone do a poll please - Yes/No/Openly Hypocritical. Edited September 15, 201311 yr by Suedehead2
September 15, 201311 yr I am openly hypocritical and will moan about old songs I don't like re-entering while cheering on old songs that I do like re-entering.
September 15, 201311 yr Author Perhaps there's an element where some people secretly like it but would be too dignified to disclose such joy?
September 15, 201311 yr I would like them to go away as soon as possible from the Top 40, whether I like them or not. The 59p bargain annoys me when it causes the songs to sell highly enough to return to the Top 40... and talent shows too though not as annoying as 59p. (I still bear a grudge over Will Smith 'Summertime' and Pras 'Ghetto Supastar')
September 15, 201311 yr Author Thanks to whoever did the poll. I think the talent shows factor (lol) is worse because the songs that get sang on those shows are crowd pleasing shite (usually).
September 15, 201311 yr Poll added :D I think it depends on the age of the song and/or its level of success at the time of release as much as (if not more than) whether I like the song. It is good to see some songs from many years ago reach a new audience and it is good to see recent songs that were not hits get another chance. If a current song I like misses a top 40 place because of an old song, I am more likely to be frustrated / annoyed if it is kept out by the re-entry of a song that was a big hit only a year or two earlier. Of course, it's not always quite as simple as that. Sex by The 1975 has spent the last two weeks at number one while the utterly appalling Gold Digger has been in the top 40. That is a terrible injustice
September 15, 201311 yr Author That's true. I suppose the suffering of other new artists who could do with the publicity of getting a Top 40 hit is something to consider.
September 15, 201311 yr Love the charts and LOVE that in this day and age they represent what sells in a week to deem what's popular in that timeframe, regardless of the promotional opportunities that drive sales. I am even open to introducing streaming etc because while I don't get 100%, I get it 100% that things change.... There are plenty other measures of cool which have restrictive elements to control the content f that's what you prefer.
September 15, 201311 yr There should be a 59p chart, that would sort out the old songs from entering the official chart, I did do a topic about it a few months back.
September 15, 201311 yr But as I posted at the time, the 59p reduction is not across all platforms so you can't exclude songs based on a single outlet
September 15, 201311 yr My point of view closely mirrors that of Bre. I like it when they're songs I like (e.g. Starship last week), and don't like when they're songs I don't like (e.g. Swedish House Mafia this week). Same as with new songs really!
September 15, 201311 yr There should be a 59p chart, that would sort out the old songs from entering the official chart, I did do a topic about it a few months back. There really shouldn't - this is not America and the chart should fully represent what is selling even if artificially under price reductions. Some downloads are sold for 59p in their first week to drive up demand and it is no different to CD singles being sold at £1.99 in Week 1 and then going up to £2.99 or £3.99 in Week 2 - though I think bargain bin singles were excluded in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Fact is: I think there were a few weeks in 2009 when Lady GaGa sold "Poker Face" for 29p on Amazon and with sales lower/more marginal in those days managed to scrape a week at number 1 against the Noisettes - should that have been moved to a bargain chart for those weeks? Personally I don't really mind old songs making the chart as long as I like them ~general consensus FTW~ especially when they originally failed to chart or received an unjust peak.
September 15, 201311 yr There really shouldn't - this is not America A great David Bowie song and the right chart rules.
September 16, 201311 yr But the old songs coming back are always Adele or Emeli Sande or Beyonce that seem to be the staple diet of the X Factor. It would be very nice for a long forgotten track to be dragged up by a contestant-there are plenty of killer tracks on 60s and 70s albums that never get covered and if they got a week or so in the charts it would be well deserved.-let's have someone doing a Neil Young or Van Morrison or Johnny Cash or Pink Floyd track on the X Factor and introduce people to some classic songs.
September 16, 201311 yr I could make some charts with these songs out of the equations if I ever had the time.
September 16, 201311 yr Based on the song. I don't have anything against for a new peak positions for the songs, which I like or non-hits, but I dislike discounts, comebacks for the huge hits from past (especially from last 2-3 years)
September 16, 201311 yr I don't mind older tracks being able to chart in the Top 40, especially if they're tacks which have previously under performed and are able to get a decent peak due to being used on talent shows e.g. Iris, Cannonball to name a few. It does get annoying when it's the same old tracks re-entering due to bring overused like A Thousend Years, Read All About It PIII.
September 16, 201311 yr I dont mind when songs become genuinely popular again - like Journey, Adele etc and sell alot in their new top 40 run but hate when old songs re-enter at 38 for a week because they are 59p on itunes and stop new hits entering the top 40! Basically i hate the way itunes dictates the 59p offers and they always seem to be the same songs! Edited September 16, 201311 yr by steve201
