M.I.A. wins Re:LOADED V in Cadelicia

 

Less than a month after the last Re:LOADED winner was announced, another one has been, for Re:LOADED V in Windevale, Cadelicia. That's less time than a couple of the earlier editions of the spinoff dragged on for ;o Anyhoo, the nation now known as Xanaga (then United States of Ibiza) improved on their original 9th place finish to win with M.I.A.'s 'Paper Planes', perhaps helped by the song being rather more well-known now than it was at the time. Although even at the time it was apparently pretty well-known.

 

'Paper Planes' topped the rerun on 97 points. A more inspired challenger, the Double J Radio Mix of 'Exodus '04' by Utada Hikaru came second with 93 points for Mdiče, while 3rd place went to Rivandia with Yelle's 'A Cause Des Garçons' on 81 points. The original winner, t.A.T.u.'s 'Gomenasai' representing Elëdan (or FKA π as they are now known) settled for 8th place this time around.

 

For the first time in any edition of the contest (after 77 main contests, 7 editions of 'The Best of BJSC', 7 editions of 'The Best of the Rejects', 4 editions of BJFestivalen, 4 earlier editions of Re:LOADED and 10 other spinoffs), a song received no points. That song was 'Todo Cambió' by Camila representing the now disgraced alias nation of Camtoro, finishing outside the top 10 of all 20 voting nations.

However, we can announce that our latest spinoff entry (in the UK Chart Near Misses competition hosted by Danaelanda) is 'Angels' by The xx, a UK #43 hit from 2012. This is somewhat surprisingly the first time The xx have been sent to the contest although singer Romy has appeared as a solo artist, featured on Isconian entry 'Days' by CREEP, a DNQ in BJSC XXXIII.

tiny deaths quietly awarded bronze medal in the aftermath of Tampergate

 

On the night of the results of BJSC LXXVIII on Thursday, our entry 'Ocean' by tiny deaths was announced as finishing 4th with 274 points. However, following the revelation of a vote tampering scandal, Aquafina's entry (Mz. 007's 'Important'), which had originally been called the winner, apparently giving Aquafina a record-matching third win in a row, was disqualified entirely, alongside Aquafina being given a 6 month ban, giving us an 'official' 3rd place, with a slightly revised score of 273. Technically bronze is the best kind of bronze! This was a highly unexpected success after a lack of hype for the song for most of the contest.

 

It continues our run of top 5 finishes in all even-numbered contests of 2015 and provides us our 6th podium finish, 8th top 5 and 9th top 10 in all (as well as a 9th opportunity to finally score back to back top 10s - will it ever happen?!) Despite the top 3 position overall it was in few individual countries' top 3 songs; D'yermak'er provided the song its only 18, Terra Avium its only 15 and #00274E and Aeroche its only 13s. Thank you to those and the 27 other countries who gave us at least one point.

 

'Ocean' was also revealed to have come 2nd in semi-final 2 with 115 points, marking the third time in four semi-finals (five contests, one of which we autoqualified for) that we have come 2nd and our 4th highest points total in a semi-final, just 1 behind what Audrey Napoleon's 'Dope A La Mode' managed to also come 2nd two contests ago.

The winner - only officially crowned yesterday due to the aforementioned Tampergate scandal - of BJSC LXXVIII was Mulgracia's entry 'Fuel To The Fire' by Rationale, coming exactly 10 contests after their previous win under their old name of Jamvale with Michael Woods' 'In Your Arms' (feat. Lauren Dyson). It received 327 points after de-tampering, becoming the first post-A-WA winner to fail to beat the points record they so briefly held. Victory! This also made them the first country to win under 2 different names, though they'd already achieved this if including BJFestivalen IV which they also won earlier this year.

 

Had it not been disqualified 'Important' would still have come 2nd with 314 points. As it were, 2nd place went to newbies Joedonia who failed to qualify with their first entry last month but fared far better on second attempt, receiving 290 points for Låpsley's 'Hurt Me'. Perhaps makes up for their quite integral involvement in the Tampergate scandal. Filling out the top 5 behind our entry, Altyr Muunilinst and Singerpurear both received 248 points and were in a tiebreak for 5th which was won by the former. However, both have ended up in the record books as top 5 hits. Gareth Emery and Alastor's 'Hands' (feat. London Thor) came 4th for Altyr Muunilinst while Singerpurear, a month after their long-awaited first top 10, set another new personal best of 5th with Kishi Bashi's gorgeous 'I Am The Antichrist To You'.

 

Also getting new peaks in the top 10 were 2 of this year's debutants. Jadakissnia bested their previous 9th place finish with a 7th placer, AK and LYNX's 'Virtual Paradise' (feat. Veela), a strong comeback from their first DNQ last month and also providing this month's token drum n bass hit. Meanwhile Triangledonia achieved their first top 10 hit - again thanks to Aquafina's disqualification - coming 10th with token trance hit 'Rush' by Venom One feat. Sarah Howells. Elsewhere in the top 10 Aeroche and Ramrynia continued top 10 runs (of 4 and 3 respectively). Aeroche's last entry to not go top 10 was ROZES' 'Everything', but that didn't stop them sending ROZES again, who this time managed 6th place with the Lost Kings remix of 'R U Mine'. Ramrynia came 8th with Level 3's 'Feeling Your Love (LaaDeeDaa)' (feat. Martika L.A), marking three months in a row coming either 8th or 9th. Finally in the top 10, N DNTN reached it for the first time in 9 contests in 9th place with Hannah Diamond's 'Every Night', atoning for the surprise DNQ of Diamond's previous entry 'Pink And Blue' (which represented Kluminican Republic).

 

Two countries achieved new peaks in the top 15 - Pupok's second entry 'Black Out Days' by Phantogram came 13th following the DNQ of their debut, while Flynnonda's 5th entry and 2nd qualifier 'Silverlined' by XYconstant came 15th, beating their previous peak of 23rd.

 

The only debuting country this month was Dobago. They just about managed a debut qualifier with Badpojken's 'Johnny G (The Guidetti Song)', which finished 36th in the final. Four countries made returns, of which only Skall DNQed. #00274E's latest return in their more sporadic than usual entry history continued their near perfect run of qualifiers (23/25), as they finished 16th with Bagarre's 'Claque-Le'. Oslol were banned last month but came back with a bang, finishing 11th with Kiiara's 'Tennessee'. Finally, Qärenfanghoney, who have also entered quite sporadically over the past few years, came 23rd with HandS' 'No Romance', apparently a song which received significant hype when it first came out a couple of years back. They tend to stick around when they qualify so hopefully we might see another entry from them next month in Mulgracia.

 

Only 4 countries fell short of 100 points this month - Terra Avium heartbreakingly so, finishing 38th with 99 points with our former potential 'Girls' by Slow Magic - perhaps due to a larger than usual number of non-voters. Desbuanda were among the non-voters but due to extenuating circumstances are not facing the usual penalty for not voting. They came last even before any potential deduction though unfortunately, with Steven A. Clark's 'Can't Have' coming 41st (42nd prior to Tampergate) on 89 points.
