Persephonia clears out the archives again for an emotional end to 2015

 

Persephonia were planning to be represented this month by American hip-hop duo Run The Jewels' year-old 'Oh My Darling Don't Cry'. Unfortunately, the BJSC moderators did their job correctly (perhaps a bit TOO correctly - does a US #50 album really equate to 7 veto points??) resulting in the world-shocking scandal of Persephonia being vetoed. Never fear though, we had another archive hip-hop track in our arsenal to ensure we still spectacularly bomb out of the semi-finals this month.

 

Swedish rapper Yung Lean, the leader of a group known as Sadboys, has been selected to represent Persephonia in BJSC LXXX in Aeroche with his December 2013 single 'Kyoto', which remains the CROWN JEWEL of his discography, with a perfect balance of the memetic quirkiness that first saw him come to prominence among certain niche Internet communities and the more polished sound and higher budget of his more recent material. Fellow Sadboys member Yung Gud was responsible for the production on the track which, as with many of our entries, is its strongest feature. Insert fire emojis. Yung Lean was previously sent by the Persephonian BJSC Committee's anonymous division to the 17th edition of the Unknown Pleasures competition - coincidentally also hosted by Aeroche, kind of - with 'Yoshi City' which floundered at 22nd out of 26. Aeroche and Altyr Muunilinst can probably be assumed to be safe at the top of the year to date list. ('Kyoto' had actually been among the Persephonian BJSC Committee's potential list since even before that, and was most recently very close to being our entry to BJSC LXXIV, before we came across 'Habib Galbi', a switch which was probably the right decision).

Persephonia bomb out lol

 

To the surprise of no one Persephonia's qualification streak has ground to a halt again as Yung Lean's 'Kyoto' failed to reach the final of BJSC LXXX in Aeroche. We just chose to be merciful to those vying for the top year to date slots and qualification streaks okay. (In all seriousness though we had plenty of surefire qualifiers in store, but we decided to RISK IT ALL instead. No regrets ~)

 

'Kyoto' is our 17th DNQ in total out of 59 entries and with its position of 27th out of 32 in semi-final 1 has become our lowest positional finish ever. However, in terms of proportion of available points, it is merely our 5th worst performance to date, (our worst since the inexplicable disaster in BJSC LIV). The song received 31 points in total from 7 different countries. N DNTN, the only country we were confident would help us out here, voted late but thankfully the hosts allowed their votes in so their full 12 points to 'Kyoto' counted. Hooray. We also got a medal position from Cumulonimbia, awarding it 8 points, while Espen gave it 5, Republic of Adonia (another late voter) gave it 3 and FARC, Jadakissnia and Tinnmark each gave it a single point. Thanks to all of those countries for helping us not be bottom 5.

 

Persephonia will be back with a vengeance... hopefully still this year as there's another spinoff and the yearly 'The Best of BJSC' and Rejects competitions, but certainly next year as we mark our 60th anniversary special in January's contest. Good luck to all of our faves in this contest as we'll be watching from the sidelines :magic:

BJSC LXXX final results commentary + Persephonia's televote results

 

In the final main contest of the year, #00274E finished a successful year with style, achieving their second winner to date with Delta Heavy's 'Ghost'. They last won back in BJSC LIII with Carli's 'Look Up'. 'Ghost' is also the second drum n bass winner to date, following our own win with Jay Dabhi and Moises Modesto's 'Cry For Freedom', though the genre has picked up a reputation for delivering a token hit in most recent contests. 'Ghost' was the clear favourite with most bookmakers throughout the contest (PersepBet even gave it odds as short as 1/3 ahead of the final!!1). Throughout most of the final reveal it seemed to be in at least a 3-horse race for the win, with 1 point separating the top 3 at some points, but come the final result it dominated the field as predicted with 377 points in total and a 65 point lead over its nearest rival, securing its place as one of the biggest hits of the year. All thanks to that devious little paperclip. (And the song of course).

 

Taking silver for the second contest in a row and a third time in total, having yet to ever win, were Kluminican Republic. Their tally of 312 points with Caravan Palace's 'Lone Digger' exceeded the score they managed with last month's runner up 'Circles', and indeed would have been enough to win last month. If it's any consolation it does appear #00274E will be passing on hosting rights for BJSC LXXXI so Kluminican Republic could be hosting the first contest of next year. Just behind Kluminican Republic were two countries setting new bests, having previously peaked at 6th in the contest. The bronze medal went to Terra Avium with Owsey, Jernalism and Resotone's haunting 'I've Been Secretly Falling Apart' receiving 310 points to beat their previous best with M83's 'Un Nouveau Soleil' during their Terra Dinosaur era. 4th place with 303 points was Special Request's 'Amnesia' representing Cumulonimbia, whose previous biggest hit was Lovelife's 'Dying To Start Again'. 'Amnesia' received 8 sets of 18 points, more than any other song in this contest ('Ghost' had 7 18s, and though it only had 3 18s, 'I've Been Secretly Falling Apart' ranked in more nations' top 2s than any other song, as it also received 7 15s while 'Amnesia' only had 1 and 'Ghost' 2). Quintessa had also never had a top 5 hit until last month but managed a second in a row with Mirror Talk's '1/M/T' completing the top 5 with 286 points, more than they received to finish 4th last contest.

 

Altyr Muunilinst finished in their oh-so-infamous 6th place with Jerome Price's 'Me Minus You' for a third inexplicable top 10 hit out of their last 4 entries. D'yermak'er and Greenfroze both came back from multiple consecutive DNQs to get top 10 finishes this month - the former DNQed twice in a row with their bhangra-tinged entries from Roshan Prince and Rajveer et al but returned to more contest-friendly ground with Alex Winston's 'Down Low' and finished 7th, their first top 10 for 7 contests, while the latter had DNQed 3 times in a row but now finished 8th with Bear Mountain's 'Hopeful', somewhat of a surprise big hit. Joining Greenfroze in the top 10 were their Norwegian counterparts Tinnmark in 9th with Sonny Alven's 'Our Youth' (feat. Emmi), marking only the second time in their long history they've achieved back-to-back top 10 hits. Completing the top 10 was One More Time's 'Highland', providing FSR Rontvia with only their second top 10 hit of the year, a historically low total for the many-record-holding nation. 'Highland' is the second top 10 hit of 2015 (after Sandra's '(I'll Never Be) Maria Magdalena') that dates from before the turn of the century, being released in 1992. Host nation Aeroche just missed out on a 6th straight top 10, coming 11th with autoqualifier 'Cake' by TIEKS. For shame.

 

There were no debuting nations this month but 2 countries made the final for the first time on their second attempt. St. Burbia fell short of the final last month but fared much better with Dirtcaps' 'Fools Paradise' (feat. Rochelle) which managed 13th place. Frandoot debuted 3 contests ago and similarly fell well short of the final with their debut entry. They took 2 months out of the main contest before returning (though they did enter the Halloween spinoff in the meanwhile), and came 38th with comeback entry 'Red' by HyunA. 3 other returning nations made the final, led by FARC (12th with Wolf Tide's 'Spoke The Words') and also including Avalonia (22nd with SVĒ's 'BLKNBL', nearly beating their previous best) and Ajanaeda (36th with KLOE's 'Grip').

 

In addition to Terra Avium, Cumulonimbia, St. Burbia and Frandoot, 2 more countries beat their previous best position. Ultraviolenceland edged closer to a first main contest top 10, coming 15th with Sammi Sanchez' 'Talk' (beating the 18th place finish of Alexa Goddard's 'We Broke The Sky') and Dobago continued their trend of getting a slightly higher position each month, with their 3rd entry 'Sleep When We're Dead' by ItaloBrothers coming 31st, 5 places higher than their last entry. Additionally, while not a new peak, there was a notable surprise hit from Tartford who defied predictions of last place in their semi-final (not by us, what are you on about) and horrendous odds to do quite well a second month in a row, coming 25th with 'Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby' by Cigarettes After Sex.

 

They've come around from their former perennial flop status to now have one of the longest qualification streaks (5 and counting) but Singerpurear can't entirely escape the floppage and took this month's wooden spoon, coming 41st out of 41 with 'Chamak Challo Chel Chabeli' by Sajid Wajid, Kumar Sanu and Shreya Ghoshal. On the upside, it is the second time this year they have taken Bollywood into the final which is quite the achievement, and they did at least ensure every country in BJSC LXXX's final achieved at least 100 points, receiving 102 points themselves.

Persephonia put their hopes behind 2 hopelessesfuls in The Best of the Rejects VIII

 

It's the end of another year and so it's time for the latest rounds of The Best of BJSC and The Best of the Rejects. The rejects competition has kicked off first in Bignia-Zaragovina (yes, they're still alive!), giving all the songs that failed to make the final of their own contests this year another chance to achieve song contest justice. As such Persephonia has 2 entries in the nominations stage of the contest:

(20th in Semi-Final 2 of BJSC LXXIII)

 

Yung Lean - Kyoto

(27th in Semi-Final 1 in BJSC LXXX)

 

Any and all nomination points appreciated. But really we're holding out for the main TBO where we have a much better chance of making an impact.

 

There is some more Persephonia action that isn't reliving our earlier entries though, as the BJSC Xmas Special II is kicking off in Ultraviolenceland which means... it's time for a NOT-SO-VAGUE TEASER ;o

To help me compile my EOY this year I've done a mini rank for every country for 2015. Here it is. The top 150 songs (and the bottom 30 because I'm mean) will be revealed in the near future, the latter lot is ordered but so far I've not started ordering the good list. Will accept bribes.

 

Note that I've excluded Galantis, Natalie La Rose and most controvly Martin Solveig from the top 150 as they pretty much wholly grew on me as a result of becoming hits afterwards. I've left in others that I associate more with things other than the contest (I think Yeasayer, Everything Everything and Sigala are the only 3 songs in question EDIT: also Young Fathers) because they got big points from me in the contest as well.
