Posted November 6, 201311 yr 22nd November, a Friday as it was in 1963. I've always been interested in this and hope there are a few documentaries on UK TV. There's going to be lots on US TV. Wonder if Sky News or any other UK channel will show the ceremony in Dallas at 5pm UK time, 12 noon Dallas time. Seems the first one is on ITV on Thursday 14th, The Day Kennedy Died. Includes a new interview with Clint Hill, who was Jackie Kennedy's secret service bodyguard that day. He leapt on the back of the limo but has been haunted ever since by thinking that if he'd been a second or two quicker then he'd have shielded Kennedy and taken the fatal shot himself. :( Edited November 6, 201311 yr by Common Sense
November 6, 201311 yr He is dead, no amount of speculating or tin foil hat conspiracy theories is going to bring him back to life
November 6, 201311 yr I only really clicked it was the 50th anniversary because the excellent Stephen King book 11/22/63 etched the date in my mind. Reading it will almost certainly be a more enjoyable use of time than most of these probably clichéd documentaries.

November 7, 201311 yr Author He is dead, no amount of speculating or tin foil hat conspiracy theories is going to bring him back to life I know that but I'm just generally interested in the whole event.
November 7, 201311 yr My parents like to talk about how they knew nothing about it until the following morning. We didn't have a television and my little brother was only a few weeks old so they didn't have the radio on either. So, they didn't hear about it until they picked up the paper in the morning.
November 7, 201311 yr Author My mum was down in the cold cellar doing the washing with the old twin-tub when my dad came running down to tell her as it had come as a Newsflash on the telly.
November 7, 201311 yr my mum was upset about it I know, but I don't remember it, there was this new show on TV called Doctor Who which had a big impact on me instead. On the other hand I clearly recall Robert Kennedy's assassination and like my parents was shocked, both were viewed as trying to make a difference to the world for the better... I think it was the second news event to affect me, after the Aberfan disaster.

I think it was the second news event to affect me, after the Aberfan disaster. Aberfan is the first news story I can remember hearing about at the time. I didn't really pick up the details but I certainly remember hearing that something really bad had happened at a primary school and that lots of children (of roughly my age and above) had died.

I didn't really pick up the details but I certainly remember hearing that something really bad had happened at a primary school and that lots of children (of roughly my age and above) had died. I just looked up Aberfan - it's shocking how horrific it is, and I'm ashamed that I had never even known about it until now. It's sad that events like these seem to have been forgotten by people of my generation.

It's sad that events like these seem to have been forgotten by people of my generation. There was some coverage at the time of the 40th anniversary. However, I probably noticed it more because of its significance for me. You can see why hearing about this will have had such an impact on someone who had just turned six.
November 7, 201311 yr I'm watching the programme on news flashes shown on ITV last night. There was a fairly lengthy section on the Kennedy assassination and also a brief bit on Aberfan.
November 8, 201311 yr but I don't remember it, there was this new show on TV called Doctor Who which had a big impact on me instead. I only really remember this because of the effect it had on Doctor Who's broadcast in 1963 (and I still need to read the NSA book that's the Doctor arriving in 1963 when he's assassinated).
November 8, 201311 yr Author I'm watching the programme on news flashes shown on ITV last night. There was a fairly lengthy section on the Kennedy assassination and also a brief bit on Aberfan. Yes I watched that on Wednesday. Walter Cronkite broke the news that JFK had died. Here in the UK there was a journalists' awards night going on when news came through around 8pm so the BBC and ITV newsrooms only had skeleton staff as everyone was at the awards dinner! Inexperienced newscaster John Roberts made the BBC1 announcement. The awards night ended early in fact so journalists could return to cover the breaking big story. November 8, 201311 yr I know that but I'm just generally interested in the whole event. I am the same with the Titanic, have several books on it, fascinating stuff tbh But Kennedy thing there has just been so many theories that x did it or y did it or they both did it with help from z that the whole thing to me has become quite tedious, hundreds of programs/films/books all with different theories, no one will ever know what really happened that day

Off-topic here I know but what do you think to the idea that they'd swapped ships and it wasn't really Titanic that sunk that day? Yeah the truth about Kennedy will never come out. There's even theories that the Zapruder film was a fake, was watching a documentary last night showing trees and road signs that don't match up etc. Got quite absorbed in it. I think it was definitely the Titanic, she has sister ships but in terms of wreckage discovered on the seabed there has been things that have exactly matched Titanic so i have no doubt it was her that foundered Have never seen the Zapruder film so can't really give a qualified opinion :o

Was reading that all the broadcasters here and in the US have jointly decided not to show the Zapruder shot of his head being half blown off on TV this month. It's too upsetting and graphic but is awesome if you've never seen it. I hadn't until we got the Net.

Can't say i particularly want to see a half shot off head but you cant rewrite history, it happened, so what happened should be portrayed warts and all, it was one of the most historic moments of the 20th century
