It's December, and you know what that means? That's right, it's time for my 6th annual list of my top 50 songs of 2013. Which song will find it's place on the wall of fame, joining my favourite songs of the past few years? Past list toppers have been:

2008. Vampire Weekend - A Punk

2009. Empire of the Sun - Walking on a Dream

2010. French Horn Rebellion vs Database - Beaches & Friends.

2011. The Vaccines - Norgaard

2012. The Asteroid's Galaxy Tour - Heart Attack

And last year, the top 10 went a little bit like this:

1. The Asteroids Galaxy Tour - Heart Attack

2. Little Comets - Jennifer

3. Public Service Broadcasting - Spitfire

4. Japandroids - The House That Heaven Built

5. Wonder Villains - Ferrari

6. Foals - Inhaler

7. Django Django - Default

8. Passion Pit - Take a Walk

9. Eugene McGuinness - Harlequinade

10. Shonen Knife - Pop Tune

And it satiate your appetite, here are a few clues as to what songs will feature:

- 3 songs on the list made it to #1, the most chart toppers to make the blog's top 50 since 2008.

- 9 songs are from Northern Irish artists.

- 2 songs on the list are not sung in the English language. Both of the songs are sung in the same language.

- 11 acts featured have appeared in at least one top 50 list since its inception in 2008. One act is appearing for the record-breaking 4th year.

So who will win? Who will feature? And what surprises will lurk in the list? Tune in soon to find out!

Your Top 10 was one of the best here last year so I look forward to this muchly.

"Inhaler" and "Default" were top tunes. Oh and I'm hoping to see lots of Vampire Weekend represented. :D

Both of Public Service Broadcasting's Dutch songs? :o

And kicking us off at #50, we have:

Get Lucky

Daft Punk ft Nile Rodgers & Pharrell Williams

Album: Random Access Memories

And kicking off this year’s top 50 is perhaps the song that 2013 will best be remembered for. Having teased bits and pieces of their first single since 2005 for months, “Get Lucky” spread like a wildfire when it was finally released in May, topping the chart on both sides of the Atlantic and selling more than a million copies in the UK alone, which seemed miraculous when their last lead single failed to make the top 30. The song sees Daft Punk putting a greater emphasis on live instruments than their past releases, and features guest guitar from disco legend Nile Rodgers and vocals from Pharrell to create a song that’s both upbeat, funky, and still has Daft Punk in its DNA.

Killer

Little Bear

Album: N/A

Little Bear are a four piece group from Derry, the UK City of Culture. They shot to local fame after standing in for Two Door Cinema Club at the ‘Other Voices’ concert/Tv show, and were later playlisted on BBC Radio 1. They released their debut double A-side single in July, from which the irresistible “Killer” is taken from. A dark folky song with echoes of Elbow and Wild Beasts, the song is one which should see the band fare very well into 2014.

Break Out

TeamRKT

Album: Living the Dream E.P

TeamRKT hail from the small town of Portstewart and make music which is self-described as “chiptune-rock” - songs which mix Gameboy created melodies with guitars. Their music is fun and melodious, as can be evidenced on their fantastic song “Break Out”. The synth-solo after the 2nd chorus is just sublime.

Do I Wanna Know?

Arctic Monkeys

Album: AM

To call “AM” the Arctic Monkeys’ comeback album would be slightly disrespectful to the band. After all, their last four albums all hit the top spot. However, the album seems to have won over a lot of people outside their core fanbase who hadn’t warmed to their last 2 albums. It seems that the song that got them on side was the fantastic “Do I Wanna Know?”, a crunching rock number which despite a somewhat modest peak of #11, hung around the charts for months, becoming one of their biggest selling hits since their 2006 heyday.

House on Fire

Outfit

Album: Performance

I picked up the debut album from Liverpudlians Outfit after Radio 1’s Phil Taggart recommended it to me. Taken from that album is the hypnotic, sinister “House on Fire”, a track which is like the derranged love-child of Hot Chip and the Lightning Seeds.

Mozart’s House

Clean Bandit

Album: N/A

Probably the most unlikely song to make the top 40 in 2013, Clean Bandit mix hip-hop with minimal techno and a live string quartet to create a sound that’s simultaneously the sound of the past and the sound of the future. As it’s name suggests, “Mozart’s House” samples Wolfgang’s “String Quartet #21”.

Don’t Kill Bugs

Crash & The Coots

Album: Hill Rise E.P

A slightly bizarre track from Wiltshire trio Crash & The Coots, who name themselves after the popular PS1 platform game. “Don’t Kill Bugs” is a sub-2 minute Beck-esque number about the morality of taking the lives of minibeasts. A great little bonkers-pop number.

Endless Drain

Major Leagues

Album: N/A

Some gorgeous, short indie-pop from Aussie 4-piece Major Leagues. A song that came to my attention via Unknown Pleasures, and what a great discovery it was.

Basilisk

Fred V & Grafix

Album: Goggles E.P

Face-melting drum & bass/dubstep from Devon duo Fred V & Grafix. With a synth riff that could demolish a volcano, “Basilisk” is a monster of a track.

You Got Me Wonderin’ Now

Parquet Courts

Album: Tally All The Things You Broke.

If there’s one instrument that garage-rock has been lacking in recent years, it’s the recorder. Thankfully, Brooklyn band Parquet Courts are on hand to plug that glaring gap with “You Got Me Wonderin’ Now”, a song that’s short, sharp, and a lot of fun.

I quite like 'House on Fire' though I prefer their current single 'Two Islands'. Arctic Monkeys and Daft Punk were both personal number one's (the only hits to make it this year) and 'Endless Drain' is one of the best songs from UP this year.

Wonderful stuff. I used to play a mean recorder myself back in my schooldays

The Power

Fryars

Album: N/A

Occasional soundtrack composer Fryars is being tipped to be big in 2014 by in certain quarters, and with songs like “The Power”, it is not hard to hear why. It’s a dreamy song that calls to mind Mercury Rev and pleasant dreams.

Dance Apocalyptic

Janelle Monae

Album: The Electric Lady

Why the heck is Janelle Monae not a bigger star than she is already? She’s a diverse songwriter, has a great image, and just oozes charisma. Why she isn’t as big a worldwide star as the similarly diverse Bruno Mars is beggar’s belief. The highlight from her this year was “Dance Apocalyptic”, a fantastic pop song full of handclaps, call and response lyrics, and good times despite its end-of-time lyrics.
