She's my favourite artist and I've been a lifelong fan but it's just the nature of the industry, in 10 years time I'm sure we'll be saying the same about the likes of Rihanna and Katy Perry while new ones come along and become the top dogs. She's still successful in her own way and has a solid group of loyal fans who'll probably always be there.

I think the fact that she's getting a #2 album and actually being a *contender* for #1 27 years into her career shows how well she's doing. #1 isn't everything.
Of course, if she'd picked If Only as the single, it'll be a #1 smash and the album would be a dead cert #1 for months :smoke:
Really? :o

Yes.

That would be the perfect single choice

1 or 2 in albums will both be good for Kylie, I think the biggest question is if it can stick around.

#2 is hardly a bad result  George Michael just has a very loyal fanbase.

I would say it is more George still garners interest from the general public (especially the older generation) more than Kylie, than his fanbase being loyal and big. I think far more general people are open to a George Michael album than a Kylie one. She has become so niche within her gay market.

If my Mum or Dad bought George Michael's new album I wouldn't be shocked, if they bought the Kylie one I'd probably faint.

I guess George Michael's album is also aimed as a Mother's Day gift, I suspected George would do better, if only Kylie waited another week. Ha... using the album track was not intended.

This week also sees 2014's Sport Relief single 'Word Up' - Little Mix's cover of Cameo's 1986 hit - looking to debut in the Top 5

George Michael is basically the Robbie Williams of the 1980s, lets not get mixed up here hes an absolute legend when it comes to the UK Charts, it was always going to be hard for Kylie!

To be fair Kiss Me Once is number 5 on the ITunes worldwide chart..... http://kworb.net/aww/

it was top 20 on iTunes in 70 countries this morning.... now I know she has done no promo yet for this album and has 3 weeks of stuff coming up etc.

If she gets a number 2 album this week I will be very pleased! Most acts would kill for that chart position!

to be fair Kylie has a lot on her website too but maybe not as personalised........

to be fair George Michael is still huge and course was always going to sell a lot of albums!!

anyway, this was only from Pre-orders and Monday sales no? so still Tues-Sat to go yet.... Hoping Kylie can sell over 30k.

Kylie has got promo!!!!!!!!!! MasterCard Gig tonight in London, Sport Relief on Friday, The Voice on Saturday and GAY gig Saturday.... plus daily Voice shows from next week for 2 weeks, 4th April Graham Norton.... announced a world tour..... lol, TV advertisements.....

she is doing really well!!! you are far far to critical of the 45 year old... she is trying to do promo across Europe too......

But Mothers Day is a week on Sunday (30th). Why would this be a factor this week?

There's already Mother's Day advertisements going on regarding music so it will help, but yes it will be more of an influence next week.

I do agree that it's a pity Kylie won't get a #1 with this. I'm sure no one here is idiotic enough to believe that this makes any huge difference to her career but I'm definitely in the camp that wishes she could add one more #1 to her collection.

That said, it's worth remembering that Kylie hasn't ever been a "constantly #1" artist and while this decline in success symbolises her relevance slipping away, a #2 peak is actually quite decent in terms of her history. Body Language comfortably missed #1 when she was at her peak, X did the same in her comeback and even Ultimate Kylie wasn't a #1. Aphrodite was an exception, which makes this charting at #2 a bit less sore.
