yes thnks for this, im on holiday and it was interesting. I must say there's much extreme views on some of these fabulous records going on! Overdosing on big hits is par for the course nothing new about that, but time heals all, and they come back into favour down the line and become classics. Gotye is a timeless classic destined to be remembered for decades to come, for instance, ditto Titanium, Moves Like Jagger and most of the other big hits cos they appeal across the board. I know I got bored with Adele there, but it's not in any way a bad record as such, just personally I don't want to hear it for a few years till it sounds fresh again. B-)

I got bored of Someone Like You (even the live version) and much prefer Rolling in the Deep, which I never overplayed.

It doesn't feel like very long ago that I Gotta Feeling was destroying all digital records (I remember even 2 years after its release it was sometimes still going top 40 on iTunes in the weekends!), yet really only in the past couple of years loads of songs have overtaken it. Even Low by Flo Rida I remember having ridiculous longevity on iTunes, and it's not even on the list!

It seems 2008 is the "cut-off" here. Lots of the biggest-selling hits of 2009 (In For the Kill, Meet Me Halfway, Sexy Chick, Boom Boom Pow, Bad Boys, etc.) managed to make it, and I suspect others like Number 1 and Bonkers probably weren't far off. Whilst the 2008 counterparts like American Boy, Mercy, 4 Minutes, Dance Wiv Me, I Kissed a Girl, etc. aren't on the list (but I remember some of them making it when they did this a couple of years ago). Obviously Sex on Fire is high on the list, but that's on a whole different level!

I'm glad we've got a good song at #1. I prefer Blurred Lines to Happy, but Happy is quite good itself. With sales having peaked now, I think one of those two could be safe to hold the title forever (unless Someone Like You has a resurgence from a TV show or something, which seems common for piano ballads, so it can't be ruled out). If a yet-to-be-released song does manage to sell more than them on downloads, it will probably have to be in the next couple of years imo, since I can imagine by, say, 2017 time we'll probably be back around 2007 levels sales.

If both versions of Empire State of Mind were combined, it might have been #1. I know it's a silly thing to suggest that they'd be combined since they have two different lead artists, are on different albums, etc, but there are other songs where they have piano ballad "candlelight" versions or acoustic versions which I believe got combined to the very different originals (see: DHT, Cascada, DJ Sammy), so it's not too far a stretch to suggest that it could have happened in a slightly different universe. Just a weird thought anyway.

Coming seamlessly after California Gurls :D Nothing like hearing a Christmas song on the radio in April, then again, it's virtually impossible to dislike this whenever it's played

I'm happy to hear it at any time of year!

I wonder if it got close to the iTunes T1500 yesterday? :P

Quite a few of the songs are in the Amazon Movers and Shakers. The biggest boost has gone to Don't Stop Believing :drama:

Well, I don't suppose that gets played much on Radio 1...

How much did "Low" sell? also anyone know the total sales for "Umbrella" too? Thanks.

What has happened to the first download only track to hit #1, Gnarls Barkley - Crazy

My latest figure for Crazy is 1,078,000, which should have made the list

Crazy made #1 on downloads alone but it doesn't automatically translate that it shifted lots of downloads. I'm sure the week it made #1 on downloads was with sales of 40K or something, it only hit more stratospheric numbers once the physical was released later and so I would assume at least half of its sales were physical.

It had sold 530,000 downloads up until April 2010, shortly after in January 2011 it was announced as a million-seller but of course almost certainly 450K of that was made up of physicals. Therefore I doubt it has got anywhere near the 710K needed to make this chart!
