I would not have expected David Bowie to have a top ten single.

oh yes how could I forget the fake version of Payphone going top 10 *.* Iconic 2010s chart moment right there.

the Margaret Thatcher's death celebration campaign actually working (almost) is another shocking chart moment.

Adele would have taken over the world

Was that in retrospect seemingly so very unlikely, though?

In 2010 she was already an established star, the whole Brits 'Someone Like You' phenomenon simply turned her from 'star' into *megastar*.

Yes. I doubt anyone would have predicted she would have sold 10 million albums in the US as well as a Top 5 position in the best selling albums in the UK.

That would have been difficult to predict, but as we all know predictions are always difficult, especially when they concern the future :)

However somebody is always going to be the next global megastar and I don't think saying that in 2010 about Adele would be seen as anything approaching as unlikely as Daft Punk suddenly coming back to have a colossal selling no.1, or indeed the sucess of Maroon 5 in a similar vein.

It's just degrees of 'unlikliness' I guess, and that's never going to be easy to quantify :)

I know what you're saying, in that she isn't 'past it' and so of course it was likely she would have been successful. However, in this age of dying music sales, I still reiterate my point that I wouldn't have believed that she (or even anyone) would have scored a Top 5 album of all time and, with the addition of being a British artist, having an album selling 10 million in the US.

The thread title is not what I could predict but things I wouldn't have believed.

An X Factor winners song to be beaten to Christmas Number 1 by a choir.

A song by a Norwegian comedy duo with the subject matter of the noises of different animals would make the Top 20

Alexandra Burke's second album will sell about 7 copies

The drunken random girl from that 'Tik Tok' song will have more number ones this decade than current biggest star in the world Lady Gaga

Well in terms of album sales at least, I agree it's pretty 'unbelievable'.

Melanie C featuring on a Christmas #1.

A song spending 7 weeks at #2 behind 6 different songs.

Dizzee Rascal scoring 2 #1s in the space of 3 weeks.

A song moving 1-4-1 over a 3-week period.

A Melodifestivalen winner would chart in the UK top three.

And spend more than 2 weeks inside the top 75 *.*

* Florence Welch will team up with Calvin Harris for not one, but TWO number one singles.

* Robin Thicke, that guy who had that one #11 hit back in 2007, will have one of the biggest songs of the decade.

* U2, Christina Aguilera, Madonna and Britney Spears will all struggle to enter the Top 40 on their own, but Pharrell Williams of "Drop It Like It's Hot" fame will have three million sellers all in the same year.

* Disney will release a soundtrack that is a huge seller, especially in the US, and Beyoncé releases an album that catches everyone by surprise yet features a music video for every single song.

* Cee-Lo green, half of the duo Gnarls Barkley that released "Crazy" in 2006 will return solo and release a single featuring the F-Word that stays in the UK Top 75 for 34 weeks and 48 weeks on the US Hot 100.

* Etta James' "Somethings Got A Hold On Me" from 1962 will be sampled on two hits in the Top 5 at the same time.

* Miley Cyrus, the disney star from "Hannah Montana" will become very slutty and sing about drugs.

RE Pharrell although this has been the most commercially successful era if his career he was more than just the guy from Drop it like its Hot in 2010 surely?!

He had some other hits like Frontin' and Can I Have It Like That but DILIH is probably the one with the most longevity (at least it's the only one I still remember what sounded like without having to use audio to remind me)

Tbh this is probably the only one in the thread I'd have fairly comfortably believed, Dizzee was at his absolute commercial (if definitely not critical) peak 4-5 years ago with almost everything he touched getting to #1. I'd have been more surprised to learn that he hasn't had a chart-topper since summer 2010.

These are all great, makes me wonder if there's a similar thread out there from mid-2004 talking about things since 2000! Suppose the biggest there would be the introduction of Popstars/Pop Idol etc, the disappearance of pretty much every major manufactured pop group and the swear-heavy Eamonn/Frankee songs.

Gary Barlow having a double platinum selling album as a solo artist.

Kaiser Chiefs, One Republic and Maroon 5 having big success.

Madonna struggling to sell 100,000 of an album.

Jedward entering Eurovision twice with decent entries.

Steps returning (even though short lived) and scoring 2 top 40 album one them a number 1.

Sophie Ellis Bextor doing well with an album and a moderate successful single.

Kylie releasing a single that I absolutely hate i.e. I was gonna cancel.
