My number one regret re: Girls Aloud in 2005, was not going to their first tour. :( It was going to clash with my AS Levels, so my parents pretty much forbade me from booking tickets (I was only 16 when they went on sale, still didn't have my own card). I actually had to drop out of sixth form due to illness, so in the end I could have actually made it after all! Oh well.

'Wake Me Up'... that performance on Top Of The Pops though. *.* I remember being appalled when the midweek position for this song was #5! I was so keen for them to extend their run of Top 3s, so #5 just seemed dreadful to me. How funny! It went on to peak at #4. If there hadn't have been all those Elvis re-releases in early 2005, it would have been #3.

Anyway, worse was yet to come... 'Long Hot Summer', #7, ending their string of Top 5 singles! However I wasn't completely surprised by this single under-performing. I initially found it underwhelming, and it took me a lot of plays for it to grow on me. Eventually I loved it, but I had a feeling the public wouldn't warm to it too strongly. They did a record signing for this single, in Birmingham, but I was on holiday in the week this single came out. A few of my friends went to the signing, and they even appear in the 'Home Truths' documentary, so I was gutted for absolutely ages! Girls Aloud signing >>>> holiday in Greece, apparently.

'Biology' - all these years later and this song still impresses me. I know I keep referring back to charts in my write ups, but I distinctly remember when I found out this song was midweek #6 - I was at sixth form, and a friend texted me the position. Devastated! I was so relieved when it ended up peaking at #4. I thought it deserved so much more than that, but at least it was Top 5 for a couple of weeks.

'Chemistry' was one of the first albums I ever illegally downloaded prior to release - I just couldn't wait to hear it. It went on to be my second favourite studio album of theirs, behind 'Tangled Up'. I was so pleased when 'Chemistry' started at midweek #6, because this seemed like it would guarantee it a position in the Top 10 for Sunday. Wrong. :o I remember scrolling down the chart and my heart sinking when I got to #10, and they weren't within the Top 10. :( Clicked onto the next page, 11-20, and there they were at #11. The fan forums were in uproar. Such fantastic sales for #11 too, over 80k. It missed out on #10 by about 1k, I think. During the week of release, both the Sugababes & The Pussycat Dolls' albums were reduced in price, and subsequently both ended up higher than 'Chemistry', despite being lower in the midweeks. Shady.

I thought this album was packed with potential single choices, but they didn't choose wisely. Rushing 'See The Day' just 5 weeks after 'Biology' was something I found strange. I loved 'Whole Lotta History', but I didn't think it was a great idea to release two ballad singles in a row.

Overall, 2005 was an interesting year as a Girls Aloud fan. I think the fans had become quite complacent, expecting Top 3 hits, so them achieving none in this year was a bit of a wake up call. Was great that they got to do their first tour though, and the 'Chemistry' album was superb. In late 2005 a friend of mine booked us both tickets to their 'Chemistry' tour - which would be the first time I ever went to an arena concert. *.*

Well firstly kicking off the year with "Wake Me Up" was great but the #4 peak did break they're run of top 3 singles and "Long Hot Summer" only charting at #7 and again breaking they're run of top 5 hits but I loved it to be honest and "Biology" took me a few listens but LOVE IT and the album Chesmisty was fantastic though and deserved better than #11 position, but can't believe "See The Day" was released such a crap choice, I reckon "Whole Lotta History" should have been the 3rd X-Mas single and then "Models" as the 4th in 2006 would have been much much better. But the tour was fantastic and my fave Chesmitry tracks are = Models. Biology, Wild Horses, Swinging London Town & Watch Me Go
  • 2 months later...

I've just been re-reading these Rolling Back the Rivers in Time threads for the nostalgia and my gosh 2005 brings back a lot of memories!

So firstly, the 'Wake Me Up' and 'Long Hot Summer' releases! I remember seeing the music videos and as a 9 year old being quite shocked that the music videos were decidedly more sexual than their previous stuff! I was quite obsessed with 'Wake Me Up' as a song though and used to play the 'Wake Me Up' bike game on their website ALL the time! I also remember making my first piczo website with the help of my cousin and the homepage solely consisted of the 'No Good Advice' and 'Wake Me Up' music videos

OMG 'Biology' SUCH an amazing song, I was always obsessed with it and it's unorthodox but amazing structure. I also remember loving the music video and thinking how pretty they looked/how nice the outfits were/how cool the transitions from the different rooms were! In fact I loved it so much that I tried to replicate it on the Sims 2. OH also one other memory that stands out about this song was that I used to go to McDonalds while they were doing the offer of the music players in the hope that I'd get the 'Biology' one - thankfully I did end up getting it and still have it somewhere  It was orange and white! I think they did the music players again during the Tangled Up era but I can't remember if I got one of those or not!

Regarding 'See the Day', I just always remember thinking that the music video was so pretty and Christmassy! I also remember another game they had on their website for this song that was snow themed (I think?) but I remember there was a leaderboard and a certain number of people on said leaderboard would win a GA goody bag - and I remember the competition ended sometime in 2005 but was still up for like the next two years and they forgot to take it down, oops.

2005-2006 would've been the period when I was in year 4 at school, and I have a very specific memory of this year! I remember watching Stars In Their Eyes Kids and wanting to go on it with my friends as Girls Aloud! I remember being SO excited and that was when I discovered that you could find lyrics for songs on the internet and subsequently print them off too! We rehearsed with 'Love Machine' (when I found out that I'd been getting a lot of the words wrong). Anyway I remember being so excited for it, telling my choir teacher and everything, but then one friend dropped out so we had to replace her and then someone else quit (8/9 yr old divas!!) and I think we just forgot about it. I was chosen to be Nicola... just because in primary school my hair colour was the closest to hers  Good times <3

OMG the mini music players!!! Totally forgot them, I've definitely got the Biology one and I think I have the 2nd one somewhere also, must dig them out when I get home!

That's such a great post to read Jade, so many great memories there for you! I remember many years ago, think this was pre-2005 but I'll say it here anyway - they had a competition on the BBC website or something to get Girls Aloud to come and visit your school, I applied for it with my dad and really wanted to win

Haha they were like one of the best McDonalds toys ever, I was so chuffed with getting that one! Annoyingly I think I left mine in my great grandma's flat in Spain (!!) because I brought them there one year and just never took them home for some reason but i'm going in a couple of months so I think I'll bring them home at last this year! BTW I think it was 'Call the Shots' that the other one played!

Aw thank you so much haha, YES I forgot how much of a part of my primary school/early secondary school life they were, literally my role models! I almost forgot how amazing their songs are so it's been great listening back over their albums the past couple of days! Oh my gosh that's such a cool competition! I remember them doing a competition around the time 'Something Kinda Oooh' came out and I can't really remember what it was - I think it may have been to meet them - but I remember being SO desperate to win at the time

Just out of curiosity, are you going to make any more of these threads? It's cool if not but I really enjoy them!

So many memories with GA  I definitely will make more of these! I'll post the next one on Saturday hopefully, they kinda slipped off my radar but I was enjoying them too :D

Yes most definitely, them and Spice Girls were my two main groups growing up  Okay yay I look forward to it! :D <3

The Spice Girls kinda passed me by for the most part :o Didn't help kinda being born just as they had their success I guess. Girls Aloud came about at the exact right time for me  Was them and Atomic Kitten for me for a while :D

I always forget how young you are and how old I am!

Oh yes I don't remember the Spice Girls whilst they were famous at all, since they split when I was about 4 or something if it was 2001  I remember discovering them around their comeback and adoring their music as my parents had their CDs! But yeah I guess that's why Girls Aloud hold more of a special place, because I followed their career and they were with me growing up as they were with you! I remember my favourite was Nicola, then Kimberley and then it changed to Cheryl Tweedy (at the time)! I'd never have predicted how huge a star she would've been though as Cole/Fernandez-Versini (:kink:) Aw

It's weird to think Cheryl was arrested for assault 11-12 years ago  Totally not the Cheryl we see these days, which is good. I've got a lot of respect for her as a person after reading her autobiography, she's still on the evil side of GA but she's the least evil :heehee:

I really remember this era, I had their previous two albums but I can still remember absolutely loving Biology from basically the first time I heard it <3 always loved See The Day too.

Oh and Cheryl was always my fave <3 thankfully as a young child I had no idea she was arrested for assault and had all that going on.

Plus, I remember lying to my teacher my mum personally knew Girls Aloud for some reason and she was entirely convinced  I don't remember exactly why I did that, but there's an anecdote.
