Posted May 18, 201411 yr Coldplay’s Official Top 20 Best Selling Singles Revealed! 17/05/2014 By Justin Myers http://c0903002.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/10206-420_coldplay-2014-anton-corbijn.jpg As the British megastars prepare to release sixth studio album Ghost Stories, we take a look at Coldplay’s biggest selling tracks in the UK. Kings of modern British rock Coldplay have been racking up the hits since 2000, and are about to release their sixth studio album Ghost Stories, which could well be their sixth chart-topper on the Official Albums Chart. But what about the singles? As any rock band will tell you, it's all about the songs, man. They’ve scored 19 Top 40 hits, notching up 15 Top 10 hits in the process, including two chart-toppers. But which of their big ones come out on top when it comes to sales? We take a look at Coldplay's best selling songs in the UK. Let's wander through the Top 5 before we list the Top 20. 1: Paradise (2011) There’s nothing quite like a good old slow-burner on the Official Singles Chart, and Paradise certainly took its own sweet time. The group’s second chart-topper, it finally reached Number 1 on its tenth week in the chart, knocking off Military Wives and Gareth Malone with Wherever You Are. The first Number 1 of 2012, Paradise has sold over 900,000 copies! It lasted a week at the top before Flo Rida’s Good Feeling gave it a nudge. 2: Viva La Vida (2008) The band’s first Number 1 was a long time coming – after nine Top 10s, it was definitely due to them. The follow-up to Violet Hill, the track was taken from the band’s fourth studio album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends, which has sold over 1.4 million copies. Viva La Vida itself knocked Mint Royale’s version of Singin’ In The Rain off the top spot and was usurped a week later by Ne-Yo’s Closer. It’s sold over 750,000 copies. 3: Fix You (2005) One of the band’s signature ballads, Fix You was supposedly written by frontman Chris Martin for his wife Gwyneth Paltrow following the devastating loss of her father. Of course, that famous ‘conscious uncoupling’ would follow nine years later, but the song is still a huge crowd-pleaser, not to mention tearjerker. It peaked at Number 4 and has shifted over 580,000 copies. 4: Princess Of China (2012) What is it about RiRi and hit singles?! She can’t get enough of them, and when she’s not having her own, she’s taking over the planet and getting involved in everybody else’s! Yes, the queen of the collab was on hand to lend her vocals to this track, which Chris Martin says he secretly wrote with her in mind. Rihanna memorably performed the song with the band at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. Princess Of China reached Number 4 and has sold over 530,000 copies. On Rihanna’s best sellers’ list, it’s in 12th place. Blimey. 5: Yellow (2000) We’re almost right back to where it all started. Coldplay’s breakthrough hit went straight in at Number 4 giving them their first ever Top 10 hit. Yellow was taken from their debut album Parachutes, which has sold over 2.6 million copies, and was blocked from the Number 1 spot by three records. And they were? Kylie Minogue’s Spinning Around (3), Samantha Mumba, new in at Number 2 with Gotta Tell You and Eminem’s The Real Slim Shady new at Number 1. Yellow has sold over 480,000 copies in the UK. Other notable entries: The Scientist just missed the Top 5, but the Number 10 hit from 2002 is one of their most famous tunes, and has sold 320,000 copies. I Go To Rio-inspired Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall lands seventh with sales of 310,000 copies. Latest single Magic is up in 13th place with 160,000 copies sold. May 18, 201411 yr Author Interesting post from Shireblogger on Haven: Here are my estimates:- 1. COLDPLAY -- PARADISE :: 1,025k 2. COLDPLAY -- VIVA LA VIDA :: 755k 3. COLDPLAY -- FIX YOU :: 585k 4. COLDPLAY with RIHANNA -- PRINCESS OF CHINA :: 535k 5. COLDPLAY -- YELLOW :: 480k 6. COLDPLAY -- THE SCIENTIST :: 320k 7. COLDPLAY -- EVERY TEARDROP IS A WATERFALL :: 310k 8. COLDPLAY -- CLOCKS :: 265k 9. COLDPLAY -- SPEED OF SOUND :: 260k 10. COLDPLAY -- VIOLET HILL :: 205k 11. COLDPLAY -- IN MY PLACE :: 200k 12. COLDPLAY -- CHARLIE BROWN :: 190k 13. COLDPLAY -- MAGIC :: 160k 14. COLDPLAY -- TROUBLE :: 140k 15. COLDPLAY -- CHRISTMAS LIGHTS :: 125k 16. COLDPLAY -- TALK :: 110k 17. COLDPLAY -- LOST :: 85k 18. COLDPLAY -- LIFE IN TECHNICOLOR 2 :: 70k 19. COLDPLAY -- ATLAS :: 50k 20. COLDPLAY -- THE HARDEST PART :: 40k 21. COLDPLAY -- SHIVER :: 40k I was a little surprised that "Shiver" wasn't in the Top 20. I had previously estimated it at around 70k-80k. Assuming its absence is not an OCC error, then it must be at #21 at the moment. The total of these 21 tracks, using my estimates, and including the "missing" 120,000 sales from "Paradise" is just under 6,000,000. Music Week said Coldplay's total sales were 6,519,000 to 8/3/14, and that nuber will exclude the 160,000 for "Magic", which hadn't been released then, and the missing 120,000 for "Paradise". This means that Coldplay have sold over 800,000 album tracks via digital downloads, which is a phenomenal number. By my reckoning, they've released around 70 tracks in total, so, excluding the Top 21 above, that's about 50 others. So, on average, Coldplay seem to have sold at least 15,000 copies of every album track via digital downloads.
May 18, 201411 yr I don't think ~800,000 sales for album tracks is THAT surprising for a group as successful as Coldplay. I think all big artists who've released multiple albums in the digital age (e.g. Beyonce, Eminem, etc). would have a similar amount, if not more.
May 18, 201411 yr There's a list of 20 fantastic songs there. I don't really think there's a Coldplay song I really dislike to be honest.
July 2, 201411 yr Hi, does anyone have sales for their all (or more) of their songs, including sales for A Sky Full Of Stars before it was legible to chart in the UK?
July 2, 201411 yr Great singles band - along with Muse and Bloc Party probably one of the the best singles bands of the past 15 years.
