Posted June 15, 201411 yr Time to open a thread for England's second game. If England or Uruguay win then the losers will be eliminated if France and Costa Rica draw on Friday. The winners will still have a decent chance of going through. If it is a draw then both teams could still go through. The conditions will be a lot better. The current forecast is for rain and a maximum temperature of 18C (64F). Should Rooney be picked after his performance last night?
June 15, 201411 yr Rooney has to be dropped. Just don't think Hodgson has the balls to drop him. Should play Ox/Lallana in the wide left position.
June 15, 201411 yr We could be in with a chance here if Uruguay play like they did against Costa Rica, but I'm not optimistic. Absolutely have to get rid of Rooney though, he was awful. Uruguay could be one of the first teams out if we do win, which would be funny given that it seems like loads of Brazilians have been fearing them based on the history.

Similarly if we lose, we're out pretty much! Just depends whether Suarez is fit. I don't think he is, but he will want to play if he's 10% fit.

June 15, 201411 yr Ideal scenario - Suarez plays and is sent off after ten minutes :D Hope so! I just don't want him to rush his self back after injury, and possibly make it worse. But it's pretty much a must-win game both teams teams, so I can't see him at least not playing some part.
June 15, 201411 yr Rooney wasn't that bad but I'd play Lallana instead. Uruguay surely can't be any worse than yesterday.
June 15, 201411 yr Rooney wasn't that bad but I'd play Lallana instead. Uruguay surely can't be any worse than yesterday. He's a massive problem in the formation we're playing though. Others are defensively stronger, while still offering good attacking power.
June 15, 201411 yr He's a massive problem in the formation we're playing though. Others are defensively stronger, while still offering good attacking power. I agree, at least against top sides. Hence why I'd drop him.
June 16, 201411 yr If we're going along with the view that Rooney should play number 9, 10 or be on the bench, then you'd have to drop him. Sterling and Sturridge were two of the stand out players for England in those positions I'd go with the same team, but bring in Lallana for Rooney
June 17, 201411 yr Talk at the moment in the press, is that Rooney is going to be dropped. Let's hope so. Edited June 17, 201411 yr by Common Sense
June 19, 201411 yr Apparently Rooney has been playing number 10 in training. Welbeck on the left and Sterling on the right I do find the obsession with Rooney ridiculous though. Earlier in the week I heard John Hartson say that Sturridge should be moved out wide to accommodate Rooney. When the presenter questioned him stating that Sturridge was in better form, Hartson said that 'Players should be able to play a number of positions'. Why is that not applied to Rooney then? Lugano out injured for Uruguay, so Coates could start. Sterling should be used through the middle at some point to expose his lack of pace I'd think of going for diamond in midfield: Hart Johnson Cahill Jagielka Baines Gerrard Henderson Wilshere Sterling Rooney Sturridge Rooney, Sturridge and Sterling all central. The system does rely on the full backs for width though, so Henderson and Wilshere would need to provide cover out wide. It worked effectively for us at Liverpool with Coutinho/Allen and Suarez in instead of Wilshere and Rooney I do feel that Henderson is sitting too deep in the current formation. He's not really a holding midfielder and his biggest strength is his energy. Baffles me as to why he was taken off vs. Italy as he is one of the few players that wouldn't have gone down with cramp
June 19, 201411 yr Just think the key to the match is over-loading them with pace, and being tight at the back. If we give space to Suarez, he'll punish, regardless of how match fit he is.
June 19, 201411 yr Come On England!! Don't know what it's like where others live but lots more flags on cars and houses now in East London. One house near us has a big England flag in one front bedroom window and a big Uruguayan flag in the other! It's definitely the same house!! Edited June 19, 201411 yr by Common Sense
June 19, 201411 yr My favourite Facebook status related to this is 'God must be Scottish'. Don't know what it's like where others live but lots more flags on cars and houses now in East London. I can't work out whether Derbyshire houses are supporting the British football team or the English football team right now.
