'Frozen' always feels like a bit of an underdog when looking at Madonna's discography. It's not instantly recognised as a classic like 'Like a Prayer' or 'Hung Up' but it is a huge fan favourite and of course is one of her best sellers.

 

I'm thinking of 1. 'Hung Up' 2. 'Like a Prayer' 3. 'Frozen' but I wouldn't be surprised if 'Frozen' took second place instead.

I think all three are overrated (especially 'Prayer' and 'Hung Up') so I'm rooting for 'Frozen'.

As iconic as Hung Up is and as stunning as Frozen is, it has to be Like A Prayer :wub:

The first single from Madonna's tenth studio album, and also her first single to be made available as a digital download, it has gone on to be one of the biggest selling singles of all time. Topping the charts in 41 countries, breaking world records, and becoming the most successful dance song of the decade, it was the song responsible for restoring Madonna's career after the shaky era that came before it, both critically and commercially. The song samples ABBA's iconic 'Gimme Gimme Gimme...' and pays tribute to 1970's/80's dance through this, bringing the craze to a whole new generation. The corresponding music video, adorned in her now legendary pink leotard, is a tribute to John Travolta and dance more generally and is one of the most recognisable moments of music/visual history we have.

 

The song deals with the (all too familiar) experience of having to wait in a relationship; waiting for a response, waiting for a sign, waiting for excitement. The ticking clock that runs throughout the song helps it to move at expert pace and Madonna's persistent "tired of waiting on you" vocals blend with it perfectly. As it races along you think you've reached the peak as the music gradually begins to quieten... before returning in a spectacular crescendo that starts the party over again; the song is a cyclical experience, never quite beginning or ending but just seamlessly going on until you give up with it. A song for the club, the night ahead, early mornings, workouts, and frankly whenever you need to get into the mood. It was made for those times when you think you've had enough, just so it can help you power through. Euphoric and so feel-good, it has become an absolute beast of a song and one of the staples of the twenty first century, proving that Madonna does is indeed still (and always will) have it.

If it was ever possible to compile a Top 10 of my favourite songs, 'Hung Up' would definitely be in it. I can't put into words how excited I get when I unexpectedly hear it play. The dancefloor anthem to end all dancefloor anthems. The ABBA sample is one of the best melodies I've heard (suppose I should thank them for that but it sounds even bigger and better in 'Hung Up').

Well that is a surprise! Totally behind a 'Frozen' victory now.

I actually wanted 'Hung Up' in third, so... yay!

 

The final two songs are both stunning in their own ways, but fingers crossed for a 'Like A Prayer' win.

I LOVE it to bits (it got a 10 off me) but the idea that it's her BEST EVER is strictly for queens who came LATE TO MARGE (+ leww who we forgive + select non-queens who we do not for not being queens)

Out of that top 3, 'Hung Up' is superior. Though, all 3 are immaculate.
