Interesting article:

The move to release "Uptown Funk" looks like a master stroke, but their hand was forced in all honesty. It should have been released a month ago and allowed to build up gradually in popularity - it's clear it would have been a #1 hit no matter what the release strategy in all honesty and Capital would have HAD to come on board.

it also shows how great a mainstream pop show like Top Of The Pops could now be if it were to return on a regular basis in some new form or another in 2015

I think there is HUGE demand for a show like this. I think the BBC are hesitant to bring it back because of all the ~controversy~ surrounding its first incarnation, but a show like that would do so much for the music industry and probably make the chart a lot faster once again.

there's another Fleur East - Uptown Funk at 80 :o

What's this then an official version?

That's from "The Fleur East Collection", it's the same version ^_^

I actually think it's got little to do with the TOTP brand being tainted. Time and time again the bigwigs at the BBC have just insisted that there is no demand for a show like TOTP because of music video channels and YouTube. It's also an expensive show to make - but I never understood how they weren't making the money back by selling it round the world.

Lee, who wrote the article, is a big TOTP fan and bangs the drum for it to come back at every given opportunity. I hope one day someone will listen to him! He's worked in music TV himself.. he'd be a great executive producer!

I don't agree, I think if you ask most of the general public 'who is #1' mostly you'd get the following responses:

* the iTunes #1

* Big Top 40 #1

* or don't know/don't care.

The official chart is very unimportant today, which is why it amuses me when Cheryl claims a success by means of a tenuous record like 'most #1s by a UK female artist' and then sells a pathetic amount of albums.

I'm not sure you've fully understood what I said. I wasn't talking about whether the public perceive official #1 as being of importance, I was talking about the fact it would get it some extra exposure from either radio or the music channels... hence that example I gave that Radio 1 play the official #1 several extra times a day (or in this case, it would've got several more plays than the 0 it would get from them).

I definitely feel that we need a show which showcases live performances of these artists on mainstream tv and not just specials on music channels or just the niche acts which Jools Holland wants on his late night show (I actually like a lot of acts that have gone on the show but it is clear that the show is catered to a specific audience).

Growing up it was a big part of my initial interest in music and getting to see these artists perform, which encouraged me to invest more in that individual than just what song was currently doing well. As much as I love music videos, you can't always grasp how good an artist is as a performer. Great promo for the artists and whatever their current single is too.

If they did bring TOTP back, one idea could be that they use the midweek chart as the basis of the broadcast - showcasing new music and boosting new entries for the new chart.
They definitely need something to help out the newer talent out there. Plus it could easily slot in on a evening in the mid of the week :P

Wouldn't they just end up playing the biggest hits though, and then those hits would get an even bigger boost? If it's a mainstream show, I can't see them supporting that much new talent.
I'm surprised Itv and especially Cowell have never tried a new TOTP's type show, I would love it to come back or at least something similar.
I think they've lost interest in her as an album artist definitely, but she can still sell singles as proved by Crazy Stupid Love (not the highest selling #1 of the year but still a decent seller, same top 40 weeks as Call My Name). I fear she's becoming a bit of a fanbase act now though sadly, what with I Don't Care having such a fast decline. :(

I agree with both yourself and doctor blind here - she is clearly at then end of her huge phase but like most big artists can still chart high enough for a No1 like she did with I Don't Care in a similar way Geri Halliwell did as DB said in the 99-2001 period. She will have to comeback with something very good/different if she is to regain her popularity with anyone other than a fanbase.

This is why I was annoyed Ed didn't get 2 weeks at No1 back in Nov as his song is clearly the most popular song of that period but Cheryl got a bit of a head start being held back if you know what I mean :lol:

The thing is with a TOTP style show - to reach maximum effect it would need to be on at a peak slot e.g. starting between 8 and 9. I don't see any broadcaster willing to invest in that. Shoving it on at 7pm on a Friday was never a great move. As well as that I think some consideration would have to be given to the format because I don't think a 30/40 minute straight music show would work anymore. Straight away you're starting with a niche market that is unsure of its audience.

Radio 1 do do what you said introducing the official No1 when they play it that week but it's usually just when it's a song on their playlist. For instance Gareth Malone didn't get played as he wasn't on the playlist. In saying that the No1 WILL always get a play on the chart show on a Sunday, the midweek chart and usually on Grimmys breakfast show on a Monday morning.

About a new TOTPs I think it would struggle without the added stories and personal journeys the XF provides. I'd love it to happen though ESP now we have streams!

The UK.

I know it's in the UK where it will chart, what I meant was which position is that Iron Maiden song likely to chart at for Christmas?

:arrowup: 21. Bed of Lies (feat. Skylar Grey) - Nicki Minaj

:arrowup: 34. Up (feat. Demi Lovato) - Olly Murs

23. Sam Smith - Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

48. Nicki Minaj - All Things Go

76. Kodaline - Unclear

92. Showtek - Wasting Our Lives (WLTP) [feat. Tryna]

94. J. Cole - Wet Dreamz

96. The White Buffalo & The Forest Rangers - Come Join the Murder (From Sons of Anarchy)

A Modern Christmas update

70 Leona Lewis One More Sleep

207 Kelly Clarkson Underneath the Tree

156 Ariana Grande Santa Tell Me

314 Coldplay Christmas Lights

322 Coldplay Christmas Lights

386 Coldplay Christmas Lights

432 Justin Bieber Mistletoe

597 Kelly Clarkson Underneath the Tree

1192 Leona Lewis One More Sleep

Kelly is being used in an advert for BBC One, so it looks like it's really picking up! A top 40 entry would be the best, but will never happen, so I'd settle for a top 200 re-entry.

Coldplay with three different versions in roughly the same place. No idea where that would put them? Somebody else can do the math.

Take That back up to number 4 ahead of One Direction :dance:

Keep on moving upwards Leona and make a much deserved return to the official charts.
