December 26, 201410 yr Author Top 10 time :cheer: 10. Bony M - Mary's Boy Child (7.97) Kicking off the Top 10 is Bony M's festive number from 1978, which was originally a song by Harry Belafonte from 1956. hxm1FlLSfe4 9. Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas? (8.09) The original and the best from 1984 went Christmas Number 1 holding off Wham's Last Christmas (which is yet to come on this countdown.) bjQzJAKxTrE
December 26, 201410 yr Author 8. Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas (8.10) ((11), Ultraviolence, Insomnio), ((-1), RabbitFurCoat, Suedhead2) At number 8 we lose a big Number 1 contender from Mariah. Originally a hit from 1994, but always re-enters the Top 40 every year without fail. yXQViqx6GMY 7. Shakin' Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone (7.19) ((11), Gavin), ((2), Suedhead2) Yes! One of my favourite Christmas songs from Shaky turns up at #7. 'Merry Christmas Everyone' was originally out in 1985 and is a great feel good Christmas song. :) ZeyHl1tQeaQ Edited December 26, 201410 yr by gavindeejay
December 26, 201410 yr Author 6. Wham - Last Christmas (8.26) ((11), fgi090505), ((4), darkstar79) Held off Number 1 by Band Aid back in 1984, 'Last Christmas' is another festive favourite that seems to re-appear back in the Top 40 during December time. E8gmARGvPlI 5. The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping (8.36) ((10), Chez Wombat, Acidburn, gooddelta, jonjo, Dobbo, Gavin, Jester, Riser, RabbitFurCoat), ((5), Rabbitfurcoat) I never expected this one to get this high, but as it's another one of my favourite Christmas songs, it's good to see. Originally released back in 1981 this one, but failed to chart in the UK until 1982 where it peaked at Number 45. qR9x7_refwY
December 26, 201410 yr Author 4. East 17 - Stay Another Day (8.42) ((10), Acidburn, gooddelta, Rob S, Jade, Gavin, Insomnio, RabbitFurCoat), ((4), darkstar79) From 1994, 'Stay Another Day' was Christmas Number 1 and spent 5 weeks at the top of the charts and became their biggest hit. 0mg7ok8dmDU 3. John Lennon & Yoko Ono with the Plastic Ono band with The Harlem Community Choir - Happy Xmas (War Is Over) (8.80) From 1971 here is the legend that is John Leonnon with his classic Christmas song 'Happy Xmas (War Is Over)'. yN4Uu0OlmTg
December 26, 201410 yr Hate to be really precise Gavin but 'Merry Christmas Everyone' was released in 1985 not 86 :P
December 26, 201410 yr Author 2. Wizzard - I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday (9.33) ((11), fgi090505), ((4), darkstar79) Another Christmas track that normally re-appears in the Top 40 every Chrsitmas is Wizzard's 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday'. It was originally out in 1974. ZoxQ4Ul_DME 1. The Pogues feat. Kirsty McCall - Fairytale Of New York (9.66) Well it's no surprise that the winner is 'Fairytale Of New York'. Every year it comes back in the Top 40 and gets a lot of support from Buzzjack members to being the track that charts the highest. j9jbdgZidu8
December 26, 201410 yr Author Hate to be really precise Gavin but 'Merry Christmas Everyone' was released in 1985 not 86 :P There's always one isn't there! ;) Edited. :)
December 26, 201410 yr Great top ten (although I've heard a number of covers of Happy Xmas (War Is Over) that I prefer to the original). Brilliant to see Wizzard in 2nd. Once again above Slade, it does seem to be more affectionately remembered these days - it finishes higher in almost every published countdown/chart. I've suddenly realised that my housemate looks like a larger version of Shakin' Stevens circa 1985
December 26, 201410 yr Greg Lake still far too low, an absolute Xmas classic, that list could read as any 'Nation's favourite Christmas song' but great to see Christmas Wrapping, another really underrated Christmas song and ridiculous that it wasn't a hit first time around.
December 26, 201410 yr Glad to see Boney M in the top 10, such a great track and Band Aid '84 will always be the far superior version, than the other 3 dross versions, (especially the 2004 one, with Dizzee's awful and out of place rapping, and the over production). Mariah's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" will always be a classic at this time of year, and I do still like it, but of course it has been played to death and has kinda killed it for me. Shakin' Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone is another decent one, and glad it's done well on here, honestly thought this would have ended up getting lost amongst all the others on here, but glad it didn't. Wham, another classic, but again overplayed to death and the numerous awful cover versions through the years has put me off it, (especially Joe McElederry's bland carbon copy from a couple of years ago). The Waitresses, now this surprised me and didn't think that this was so well known, but a #5 position is fantastic and it's a great, fun and catchy number that deserved much more success than it did, and also why haven't digital downloads, done anything for this, especially as so many other classics that have been played to death over years manage to re-enter the charts every year. Maybe it's forgotten by the mass buying public, such a shame. East 17 is another great one and a great position on here, and remember I was in school when it came out and everybody, even the boys loved it. But John Lennon and Yoko, sorry just don't get, it just doesn't do anything for me, so overrated and way too high on here. So 2 songs left The Pogues and get remember what the other one is, but can't wait too see the winner.
December 26, 201410 yr Oh The Pogues, such a classic and well deserved winner, and so Wizzard was the other one, another classic, so fantastic. So overall fantastic rate and great top 10, thanks for this.
December 27, 201410 yr Great rate Gavin!! Shocked to see Mariah as low as 8 and the Waitresses as high as 5 but I like them both so am easy. Wish Greg Lake had went top 10!! Also I'll continue the pedantic pointing out - John Lennon had a Dec 72 release & Wizzard along with Slade a Dec 73 release I think!
December 27, 201410 yr Also on the Mary's Boy Child song I didn't realise the original by Harry Belafonte was the first record to sell a million copies in the Uk selling 1.12 million and then Bony Ms version sold 1.9m - massive sales for track!
December 28, 201410 yr A great top four there. I'm not a fan of Christmas Wrapping so it's not quite a great top five.
