77. USHER (385,000) 3 HITS

http://media.hiponline.com/archive/usher.jpg

With a debut album at 16 after being signed by L.A Reid and being produced by Puff Daddy is there any chance that Usher could fail? His first album didn’t do anything here but 1998’s “My Way” gave the UK a No 1 single in “You Make Me Wanna” and accounts here for over 330k of this total. He would go on to become one of the biggest acts of the 00s which few would have expected in 2000 but by that time he was an old fogey!

76. t.A.T.u (388,000) 2 HITS

http://cdn.listelist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/tatu-2003.png

Everyone loves lesbian schoolgirls right? So figured t.A.T.u whose first single “All The Things She Said” was a hit in their native Russia in 2001 under the title “"Ya Soshla S Uma” but it was old hand Trevor Horn who got involved in the project penning the UK lyrics and remixing the single for the European market and it became a hit throughout late 2002 before finally topping the UK charts in February 2003. The duo couldn’t maintain the hits despite coming third in Eurovision in 2003 and later on they confessed that the lesbian image was all for the cameras – who’d a thought?

75. CHESNEY HAWKES (417,000) 4 HITS

For about a month he had it all, looks, a hit film and the No 1 single in “The One And Only” yes Hawkes was the flavour of the month and seemingly a hit with the ladies. “Smash Hits” is popularly credited (rightly or wrongly) for ended Hawkes’ career early after they mercilessly mocked him for his facial mole but it certainly didn’t help. He’s regained some popularity now in a kind of ironic 90s way at least.

74. BOYZ II MEN (437,000) 1 HIT

http://images.starpulse.com/Photos/pv/Boyz%20II%20Men-14.JPG

Named after a New Edition song (we’ll meet them in this thread later) these guys met at school and sneaked backstage at a Bell Biv Devoe concert to meet Michael Bivens of the group who was also in New Edition. He agreed to manage them and they managed to sneak in one “teen” hit, but when that hit is a No 1 it’s understandable how you end up in the top 80 of this thread, “End Of The Road” had some help though appearing in the Eddie Murphy film “Boomerang” and topped the US charts for a then record of 13 weeks but a mere 3 weeks on this side of the Atlantic.

73.BLAZIN SQUAD (443,000) 6 HITS

How could anyone forget Blazin Squad- a bunch of 10 16 yr olds who took time out from studying for their GCSE’s in 2002 to record a cover (of sorts) of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s 1996 hit “Crossroads”. Much was made of the fact that they collected their results whilst they were No 1 and the fact that they accumulated 6 top 10 hits over a two year period is noteworthy but only Kenzie had anything approaching recognisability after the group disassembled and that was for reality TV programmes and dating Jodie Marsh.

72.GABRIELLA CILMI (469,000) 4 HITS

A product of the once magnificent production team of Xenomania, Cilmi was first heard on UK TV when she performed the version of “Echo Beach” for the ITV series in 2007/8 and within 12 months had scored herself a top 10 with “Sweet About Me” and could be heard on the Co-op ad with her cover of Connie Francis’ “Warm This Winter” which became another top 30 hit (can’t understand why this isn’t a yearly re-charter but hey ho). She even managed to squeeze a second album out before her 20th birthday with a further top 10 hit “On A Mission” but after that she’s been notable only for her absence.

Remember T.A.T,U and loved them at the time and thought they would have lasted, but oh well fond memories

Boyz II Men didn't realize they were that young, such a fantastic group End Of The Road and plus I'll Make Love To You are all time classics.

Blazin' Squad, never liked them overrated

Gabrillea such fond memories, On A Mission was such a tune, got sick of Sweet About Me radio killed it

I still tend to forget just how young Ash were when they first entered the charts. It makes me feel terribly old to think that their members are still some way short of 40.
I remember seeing a video on Youtube of Enrique Iglesias performing "Takin' Back My Love" with Gabriella Cilmi (instead of Ciara) and realizing that Enrique was twice her age! 34 and 17 years old respectively, at the time. I really wish she'd have a comeback of some sort, she's only 23 now!

I think Rick's 40 this year - Tim and Mark are the same age as me.

Same here, I wasn't expecting to see Ash make this list! They were definitely one of the best of the Britpop bands, '1977' was a brilliant album.

I'd welcome a Gabriella comeback, she has such a lovely voice

I had no idea Ash were that young! 'Girl From Mars' is one of my favourite songs of all-time

'Oh Yeah' for me

I didn't know Gabriella Cilmi was that young!

I thought the same when I checked her Wiki article soon after 'On a Mission' had hit the charts! On a different note, I can't quite get over how different she looks now with short hair!

71. BUSTED (474,000) 4 HITS

http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/39662000/jpg/_39662949_gal_busted.jpg

Championed by “Smash Hits” Busted were granted a considerable amount of goodwill by the music press due to the fact that there really was no UK band (in the traditional sense) in the charts who played their own instruments and wrote their own songs back in 2002. The fact that they appealed to the teenage audience didn’t hurt as the hits started to roll and of course they spawned McFly who outsold them....eventually.

70. NEW EDITION (478,000) 3 HITS

http://nemo.mwd.hartford.edu/~aduah/BBZ/TheBands/BandImage/New%20Edition/neweditionYoung.jpg

You may recall these lot (well a couple of them anyway) helped Boyz II Men onto this list at No 72 but not before they got themselves on it. Conceived as a new updated or edition of the Jackson 5 by Maurice Starr, he whipped them into the studio and recorded a song “Candy Girl” which only made No 46 in the US but made it all the way to No 1 here in 1983. As it transpired they only scored three hits before the group started to fall apart and a certain Bobby Brown went on to become Mr Whitney Houston whilst three others formed Bell Biv Devoe and Ralph Tresvant scored his own top 20 hit in 1991.

69. AVRIL LAVIGNE (510,000) 6 HITS

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EwjuqSiVCIM/UP1qAk-ShHI/AAAAAAAAACY/OEjNouBT1mg/s1600/2003.png

Exploding from Canada like a teenage Morissette, Avril Lavigne peddled the same kind of angst ridden tunes that had brought her spiritual elder considerable record sales and indeed she became the youngest female ever to have a UK No 1 album (at the time). Lavigne placed five of her first 6 singles in the top 10, a start she’s been unable to keep up being absent from the upper tier of the charts for 8 years now.
