Those who are that bothered about YTD glory would be the type who generally avoid riskier entries anyway I'd have thought! I kind of get Bal's point here but I don't think that's likely to be an issue in practice, I suppose we'll see if we do keep the system and risky entries stop being sent but I don't see that happening. Personally I'm hoping that the very inspired and different sounding top 3 this month (let's not forget Daehun's song was a Finnish language ballad, not quite as off the wall as A-WA and Courtney Barnett but still something a little different to the standard 'safe' entry!) will ENCOURAGE people to go more inspired for BJSC75 at least. Mainly because I don't want to be stuck with something as shit and generic as 'In Your Arms' winning my contest again (no offence James :kink:)

In other news Mazoo And The Zoo have been announced as the official mascots for Perseventyfive to recognise the inspiration they provided us for LXXIV.

OMG Yasssssssssssssssssssssssss!!

The contest's raison d'être is the discovery of new music. All the stats and YTDs are fun little add on's. Anyone entering BJSC solely with their eye on a YTD placing or purely focused on a good result is somewhat missing the point of the contest. The primary thing to focus on when choosing an entry is 'how in love with this am i', that's how I've found you get the most enjoyment out of the contest.

As for the 18pt system altering the Stats, we've had an 18pt era previously and all we've done is separate out the stats for that era. It's the same as with the pre-Untouched era that is also segregated out. So we'll just keep separate accounts for this era too.

I'd really like us to try this for a few contests before we look into making any changes. That's not to say that we don't hear what you say, but the last time we did a format shift and then immediately debated it's merits without letting people adapt, it almost killed the contest. The amount of points being given out, imo, doesn't really have an effect on the 'frantic' feeling of this contest, that was always going to be the case this month with the very fast pace, 68 votes and double votes from the halfway point to get it all wrapped up in near record time. That's primarily why I want to run it for a few months to let a few people host contests under this system so we build more of a picture of a typical 18pt 60+ member contest.

That makes sense, Silas! Thank you clearing it up. It probably is best to let it run like this for a few contests, as one contest probably isn't enough to test the water.

And on 'Are You Into Bread?' surely it's too well known on here to pass the veto?

OMG Bre's Baps and Cakes I just remembered something ...

'IF I win I will co-host with Beaverdonia'.

I might send 'Are You Into Bread?' to the mods just to see it get vetoed (entirely because of my IMPACT *.*)

But in all seriousness, no I'm not sending that ~ I have no idea what I'm sending actually, I have a couple of potentials but I may need to think more about how to make full use of this AQ  Don't want a repeat of 'Glass Heart' as much as I have no regrets about sending that.

That was the overwhelming feeling we got when the 1BF was first introduced. As a species we tend to be quite resistant to change, so giving it a couple of months allows us to get past that and have a more productive/constructive debate. At least that's what I took from the last major format change we did.

i am all for embracing change and don't need some psychological framework to tell me the reason i am not liking this change has nothing to do with logic but something inherent going on in my brain; it's quite patronising tbh

i simply do not necessarily like 18 songs per final, there is no real difference between awarding 15 or 17 points. i'm sure i'm not the only one that feels that way. bloated in a nut shell.

if i don't like 18 songs in a final do i still have to award something points to even things out fleshing out my votes or can i cut off my votes earlier. surely awarding stuff you don't like points defeats the purpose of this competition and gives the results a dishonest and unreflective taint?

You can blame Dan for making a thread on it haha :kink:

I see your point, but statistically the 18 point system and 12 point systems are practically the same when it comes to the chance you like enough songs to fill your points places.

When we use the 12 point system, the final usually contained around 28 songs. With 10 points places up for grabs, this means you had to vote for 35.7% of the songs in the final.

When we use the 18 point system, the final in this instance contained 42 songs. With 15 points places up for grabs, this equals the exact same percentage as you have to vote for 35.7% songs in the final.

So while I completely understand your point that it seems for some people that the increase in points places could result in more filler votes, statistically the 18 point system for 42 songs means we vote for exactly the same proportion of songs as we did with the 12 point system for 28 songs. Admittedly it did increase to 30 or 31 songs in the last year or so but it's very small margins.

Beaverdonia to win pls

 Thanks for the 18 points!! And Lee and everyone else!! :OOO

nowhere in life though babe, when you up the number of entries do you see an increase in quality.

we've all managed to whittle our votes down to 12 in the past. with more people it's simply a higher stakes game and more people will lose out but that's called a competition where the best go forward and the worst go out. trying to be more encompassing risks diluting the competition quality.

Bre's position as master of stats under threat! ^_^

Yeah that's true, it's all a matter of taste. I guess you could say the newer countries could be said to be more pop-orientated although I don't like to label countries in that way, so while I personally have seen an increase in quality others may not.

Congratulations Bré!!! :winner:

A well deserved top 5 finish for Danaelanda~

Impressive debuts for Jadakissnia, Aprogonia and Cor Lupus! :cheer:

i think if the finals are going to be 42 songs instead of say... 32? then the amount of songs you vote should reflect that. so instead of being able to vote 10 songs you should be able to vote 12/13 and i think that is where the happy medium lies. it's all mathematics really.

I would agree, I think all of this matters more than consistency in statistics, which as Silas adds, are just an add-on to the actual point of the contest. This is the most important thing and what you say matches exactly how I feel.
