Posted May 9, 201510 yr Can you think of acts who were big during the course of a calendar year but as soon as a new year came along they lost the mementum and were dismissed as yesterday's news? The finest example of a one-year wonder to me is Duffy. She was big in 2008 (Mercy, Warwick Avenue, Stepping Stone, Rain On Your Parade, the Rockferry album sold well) but come 2009, the public was over her and a underwhelming comeback album didn't help. Other examples that occur to me are Fairground Attraction (1988), MN8 (1995), Mark Morrison and Gina G. (1996), Vengaboys (1999), Hear' Say (2001) and Kate Nash (2007). What other examples can fit in this paradigm? Edited May 9, 201510 yr by N-S
May 9, 201510 yr Diana Vickers (2010) Daniel Merriweather (2009) as a lead artist (he was featured in a couple of top 10 hits in '07 and '08).
May 9, 201510 yr Nero (2011) Wretch 32 (2011) commercially anyway, although he could come back strong this year. Clement Marfo and the Frontline (2012) heard their songs everywhere back then, not heard anything since. Dot Rotten (2012) heavily backed that year, has since gone back underground. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (2013) will probably be big when they return, but surely not as big as back then.
May 9, 201510 yr Nero (2011) :( probably true though, The Thrill is probably set to miss the top 40 oops. Hopefully the album goes top 10
May 9, 201510 yr :( probably true though, The Thrill is probably set to miss the top 40 oops. Hopefully the album goes top 10 I know they've still got a big following, but 2011 was when songs like Guilt and Promises were played by everyone (i.e. the Capital crowd).
May 9, 201510 yr Tinchy Stryder & Chipmunk both in 2009 (they had some success afterwards but nothing too memorable), quite a few grime rappers fit this quite well. I'd argue Dizzee Rascal and Tinie Tempah as lead artists haven't proved to be anywhere near as popular after 2009 and 2010 respectively, the latter in particular had a really poor second era and pretty much has just kept his star profile by featuring on other's big hits. May 9, 201510 yr I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Robin Thicke. Whoever shaded Conor, sleep with one eye open.
May 9, 201510 yr Duffy is probably the best example of this. 2008 belonged to her but she never saw any kind of success outside of those 12 months. I have an awful feeling 2014 will turn out to be this for a number of artists; George Ezra being the main one.
May 10, 201510 yr Dina Carroll 1993 - Don't be a stranger and the perfect year. She didn't make much of an impact before or after that.
May 10, 201510 yr Cover Drive (Sept 2011-Sept 2012) In that same vein, Big Brovaz (Oct 2002-Oct 2003)
